Troubles with Texting & Driving By: Kristina Burton Reaction time decreased by 35%. Steering capability decreased by a shocking 91%. Twenty-three times more likely to have an accident. These are all horrifying statistics that occur as a result of texting while driving. Recently passed Kentucky laws are working to address these astounding statistics. Cell phone use is banned for all drivers under the age of 18. Texting while driving has been banned for all drivers. The first offense of breaking this law will result in a $25 fine. Following offenses will result in $50 fines and court fees. Opinions on these laws tend to vary among teens. Surveys have shown that some teens tend to think that texting while driving is quite easy if done cor- rectly, but others agree that it can be incredibly dangerous. Some seem to think that new devices should be invented that would allow you to text in a simpler and safer manner. Also, another large amount of teens seem to think that texting should be allowed when driving speeds of 45 mph or less. Since passage of these laws, enforcement has been closely monitored. In places where enforcement increased, and a “blanket effect” was used over towns, a very significant decrease in texting while driving was shown. However, in places where enforcement stayed the same, or possibly even lessened, texting remained the same and sometimes even increased. All in all, this is a very serious issue. Parents, be sure and talk about this with your sons/daughters. It may seem like they’re not listening, but it can definitely make a difference. Teens, you should definitely obey the law. Text mes- sages can wait (I promise they’ll still be in your inbox later), and I doubt that any message would be worth losing your license or your life over. I’m Kristina Burton, and I guess that’s why they call it the news. Announcements By: Kristina Burton 1/20—Boys Basketball v. Larue (JV/V)—Home 1/21—Swim Team—Berea 1/23—Girls & Boys Basketball v. Taylor (JV/V)—Away Swim Team Jesse Murrell In an interview with Senior swim team captain Coy Comer, we found out what all is going on with the team. Q: How is the swim team doing so far this year? A: We are doing great! We’ve won every swim meet so far. Q: What goals has the team thus far achieved? A: Well, our goals are more individually-based, but as always our goal is simply to do our best at regions and make it to state. Q: What are your hopes for the rest of the sea- son? A: To finish out hard by hopefully sending relays and/or individuals to state Q: Most improved swimmers? A: Our first year swimmers. We always see big changes from start to finish, but the team as a whole has improved Q: Are you looking forward to seeing how the team fares next semester? A: Yes, even though I won’t be swimming my- self, I’m looking forward to cheering on the Lakers. I hope they swim fast and keep the team spirit going! “Russell, Russell, Russell!” Robertson Enters 1000 Point Club By: Alyson Williams The boy’s Laker basketball team started out the new year in action against Greenwood winning 57 to 44. During the game, junior Tyler Robertson scored 23 points, and also joined the 1000th point club. I asked Tyler a few questions about this great accomplishment. Tyler says that it feels “alright” to be a member of the 1000th point club. He has been working at this since he was in the 5th grade. Tyler knew going into the game that he was only 18 points from reaching the 1000th, but this will not stop him. His next goal is winning region. The Lakers also had two more wins against Cumberland County, 90 to 54, and Casey County, 70-51. Girl’s Basketball By: Alyson Williams The Lady Lakers started off the new year with a huge win and a loss. They played Cumberland County win- ning 70 to 28, and Glasgow losing 59 to 30. I spoke with Chandra Stephens, the senior member of the Lady Laker basketball team, to find out what im- provements the Lady Lakers are trying to make. Her response was, “I think the team needs to work on our team defense, and also, one thing that we can’t work on during practice is our energy level. Right now that is a team goal, to work on that. We think as a team our energy needs to improve. Also, our heart during the games needs to improve because we have heart, but sometimes we don’t play like we do.”
