Welcome to St. Matthew’s today! February 2, 2014 Welcome to St. Matthew’s Church: Our fellowship is enriched by your presence. Thanks to each of you for being with us today! Whether you’re visiting for the first time or have been coming here all your life, we hope your time of worship and fellowship is a blessing. Introduction for the Day: The Presentation of Our Lord is referred to in some corners of the church as Candlemas because of an ancient tradition of blessing all the candles to be used in the church in the coming year at the mass celebrated that day. It was a way of underscoring the truth of Simeon’s confession that this baby Jesus was “a light for revelation to the Gentiles” and a light for the glory to Israel. Let the light of every candle in church be a little epiphany of the love of God for all people in the person of God’s son, Jesus, the light of the world. We rejoice with The Cortright Family as four of their children enter into the sacrament of baptism during the Education Hour. The children of Brad and Jennifer Cortright, Wauwatosa, they are Autumn, Lauren, Julian and Fallon. Autumn and Lauren will receive their First Communion at today’s afternoon service. Communion Celebrated Today: Today the 5th graders will be welcomed to the Lord’s table as they receive their first communion at a special 1:30 p.m. service. As a reminder that that table is large and inclusive, the altarpiece today is a rendering of the last supper from Tanzania, and the small wooden representation of the Last Supper in the chancel comes to us from El Salvador. Please wear a Nametag today: The first and third Sundays when you wear a nametag, you give others the opportunity to know your name. In so doing, we can become better acquainted as a church family. Greet someone new today! Hunger Baskets to be passed today: During the offering, a basket will be passed following the offering plate. The second collection will be directed toward local and world hunger. St. Matthew’s has always had a faithful focus on alleviating hunger in our world, and dedicating this collection on the 1st and third Sundays of each month helps to carry out that commitment. Also much appreciated are food items for Reformation Lutheran Church’s Food Pantry, which can be placed in the collection area in the parking lot entrance.

February 2 - February 23; a 4-part seriesLed by John Paradowski, St. Matthew’s Minister of Music & Worship PlannerWorship MattersAn invitation...to explore the why and the how of worship. Have you ever had questions about why we do what we do in worship? What are the foundations and practices of Lutheran worship? This series will help us to grow into a richer understanding of the foundations of Lutheran worship. With a focus on the principal gathering around word and sacrament, we will explore the foundational questions about why we gather, how we encounter God in worship, and how that encounter shapes our response in both our communities and our world. Topics include the church year, the lectionary, holy baptism, holy communion, corporate prayer, worship and culture, and more.

“Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World”

Finding Intimacy with GOD In the Busyness of Life

An invitation for every woman who feels she isn’t godly enough...isn’t loving enough … isn’t doing enough… The life of a woman today isn’t really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord’s feet...but the daily demands of a busy world just won’t leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him...yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy. We will learn how all of us - Marys and Marthas alike - can draw closer to our Lord, deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.

ADD BACK IN FOR FEBRUARY @Ò Worship is central to the Christian life. The crucified and risen Christ is present at the center of the assembly gathered around the means of grace. Through the word proclaimed and sacraments celebrated, the Holy Spirit is at work. Lives are changed. Sins are forgiven. The alienated are reconciled. Strangers are welcomed. Unbelief gives way to faith. God is praised. Worship matters!Ó Former Presiding ELCA Bishop Mark S. Hanson

Needed

Help with our “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund” - - Pastor Chris and Pastor Margaret look across the congregation and see where there might be special needs – families struggling to make ends meet, maybe the loss of a job or health concerns get in the way – and we talk about what we can do to help. Where needed, money is given to help with material needs and to let people know that they are part of our family and that St Matthew’s – all of you – care.During the year we also do some of this ministry as needs arise within the congregation and from outside. While amounts given to outsiders who approach us are small, they nonetheless add up over the year.Money in our “Pastor’s Fund” comes

from designated donations and memorial funds and from time to time needs to be replenished. If you would like to help with this ministry, please make a donation in any amount that you are comfortable with.

A note about your valuable items: A reminder to our members and guests that each week as you come to church, any valuable items should be kept with you and not left in coat pockets or in an unlocked space.

Confirmation packets for recently confirmed 9th graders are available on a table in the Library Commons (outside the library). The packets include a certificate, bulletin from the confirmation service and a photo, if ordered.

At least 6 hearts are needed by Sunday, February 9; the rest by the end of February. If you can help, please see sign-up and directions at the Information Center in the narthex. Thank you!

The first and last nights will be spent in Joplin, MO at Abundant Life church. Nights in between will be spent at University Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Norman, Oklahoma. Are you 50+? Lutheridge Camp and Conference Center in Asheville North Carolina has received a grant to develop programming for people 50 and older. The program will be called 50 Forward. Lutheridge is one of many wonderful ELCA camps across the United States. Our youth mission trip group stayed there in 2012. Rev Tim Caniff-Kuhn, Program Director for Lutheridge is traveling the country to obtain input to develop this program. He will be at St. Matthew’s on Wednesday, February 5, at 7:00PM and would like to meet with 10-20 people in the 50+ age group for a 90 minute discussion of interests and ideas. Participants will gather to hear a brief introduction of the vision of 50 Forward and complete a survey that will be used to guide a discussion about how best to meet the needs and capture the imagination of those who are 50+. Your presence would be a gift to Lutheridge and to St Matthew’s as we will receive a copy of the results from the interviews.

Did you know?Pastor Gary and Susan Erickson Scholarship Fund continues to growYou may wish to consider memorial contributions The scholarship fund was established in 2011 from memorial gifts in honor and memory of Susan Erickson and a large gift in memory of Robert and Elizabeth Froemming. The intent of this scholarship fund is to assist students in pursuing church related professions and enrollment in ELCA college. In order of preference the scholarship grants are offered to St. Matthew’s members who elect to become an ordained minister or to attain an advanced degree in theogical education. Secondly it will be offered to those students seeking a bachelors or a masters degree in a music program with intent to work in church related music. Scholarships may also be granted for students enrolled in an ELCA college with preference given to schools with a matching gift program. The Scholarship fund has grown over the past two years through the generosity of others’ gifts and memorials. All gifts are appreciated as we strive to support and assist students to achieve their goals of attaining their degrees in church related careers. Gifts and memorials and bequeaths in wills and trusts are very appreciated. Gifts should be made out to St. Matthew’s Ev. Lutheran Church which will then transfer to The Rev. Gary and Susan Erickson scholarship fund.

Let Your Light Shine: L.E.D the way through Epiphany

St. Matthew’s Lighting Conversion ProgramOur Goal: $10,000 for interior lighting conversions

Here’s How It Works: “Let Your Light Shine” by sponsoring a single bulb for as little as $25 or any other level your heart dictates.

Glow $25-$99

Shimmer $100 - $249

Shine $250 - $499

Radiate $500+

Why: Supports our commitment to Care for Creation and our goal to become an Energy Star rated congregation.

Benefits: Annual energy savings of $4,000 and an estimated payback of just over 2 years.

Our commitment to you: St. Matthew’s will reinvest 50% of the estimated 1st year savings in additional energy savings projects.

To learn more about this initiative, see the Property Committee display in the Commons area. Learn not only about the St. Matthew’s conversion program but also how you can accomplish the same thing in your own home.

Mark your calendar:

During the Educational Hour on April 27th, the Property Committee will provide an overview of the entire St. Matthew’s lighting conversion program. They will also cover the reasons for the program and how you can take advantage of the same savings in your own home.

Please join us: Your sponsorship is truly the gift that will keep on giving. Won’t you please consider helping St. Matthew’s reduce its impact on our planet and reallocate half the savings to future projects to care for God’s good creation?

Clearly mark your sponsorship “LED the Way” and place it in the collection basket or drop it off in the Church office.

“…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

Thank you to the Property Committee, especially Jerry Wunderlich, Mark Rutkowski and Ed Bross for their efforts in developing and implementing this program.

What  is  Wholeness?   Stop for a moment and reflect on the quality of your life. Are you feeling Satisfied? Energetic? Healthy?

What are the current signs in your life that indicate that your life is rich and full and healthy? What signs say it is not as full or health-ful as you might wish?

Life includes the physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual dimensions of life, which when working together in harmony, lead to a sense of well being and satisfaction with life.

It has to do with wholeness.

This retreat will look at these dimensions of life. How they inter-relate and interact with each other.

How they involve your mind, your connections with people and family, your sense of hope, your goals and dreams, your satisfaction with work. Hopefully, the time together will give you some tools for understanding yourself.

It will be an interactive time, as well as, a time for worship, a time for fellowship and time for fun.

A time to have a good sense of self-worth and self-esteem.

Retreat  Facilitator   Pr. Fran Odden was instrumental in developing small group ministry and retreat ministers during his pastorates. While serving at Central Lutheran in Minneapolis, he started over a dozen groups for men, called “Men in Motion.” Retreat leadership centered on themes such as: Faith at Work Self-Esteem Wholeness and Self-Care Marriage Enrichment Couples Communication Pastor Fran worked with the leadership at St. Matthew’s during the Mission Exploration process and pastoral search. Occasionally he has filled in on Sunday mornings.
