General Conventions

Tags will link to a page that aggregates all the content with that tag, similar to the topic landing pages in the top nav. A maximum of three tags will be displayed for articles and blog posts.

Question mark icons in the module header will spawn a layer that explains what the module is and how it works. This convention will be used throughout the

Author or Member Names will link to the profile page.

Fast Talk

1. Fast Talk will appear on most pages in the site. There will be a different Fast Talk question for each of the eight primary topics of the site. This question, and all associated answers, will be tagged with this topic. Topic pages and Article pages assigned to a given topic will only show the Fast Talk tagged with that topic.

2. When users click submit from the Fast Talk module, they will be taken to the Fast Talk Page, which shows the question and the responses in reverse chronological order. Users can be taken directly to this page by choosing see all responses.

3. Users who click on Suggest a Question will be shown the Suggest a Question Layer.

4. Users who click on Start a blog will be taken to a page (running in a Generic Text template) that explains how to write a blog for Fast Company and what is required for setup.

5. The Fast Talk module that appears on the member homepage and on the member profile page is tailored to the member by showing the questions that he or she has submitted.

6. The Fast Talk module that appears on the group homepage can be limited to only that group. The group moderator can administer the Q&A and responses would come only from group members. If a given group does not host their own Fast Talk, then the module should revert to one that all Fast Company members can participate in, based on tag.

4. See All Answers will go to the Fast Answers page, where all the replies to that question are aggregated.

5. The Fast Answers module that appears on the group homepage can be limited to only that group. The group moderator can administer the Q&A and responses would come only from group members. If a given group does not host their own Fast Answers, then the module should revert to one that all Fast Company members can participate in.

Topic Landing Page

1. The center content well will show only items that are tagged with one of the eight topics -- though the tag does not have to be the primary (first) tag. For example, all the entries on the innovation page will be tagged with the term innovation.

2. Positions in the center well for topic landing page content will be fixed, meaning that each content type will always appear in the following positions. This means that elements will update at different times during the day, and the order of homepage content will not be reverse chronological. The order of positions and the expected frequency of updating is as follows:

3. Fast Company Feature, updated once each day

4. FC Now Staff Blog, updated once each day, in the morning

5. FC Expert Blogs, updated throughout the day, limited to only blogs or blog posts tagged with the given topic

6. Fast Talk, updated throughout the day as new responses are approved by editors

7. Fast Company Feature, updated once each day, shows the article from position #1 from the previous day

8. Member Blog, updated throughout the day as new posts are approved by editors

9. Article Comment, updated throughout the day as new comments are approved by editors

10. Fast Talk, updated throughout the day as new responses are approved by editors

11. The section label will link to a page that aggregates all the content of that type. The content on each of these pages will be in reverse chronological order.

12. One primary group will be featured on each of the topic pages. This will link to the group homepage.

13. For the Most Active Groups and Special Editions modules, see the Right Column Modules section.

14. For Fast Talk, Fast Answers, Featured Members, Most Recommended Content, and Popular Tags, see the Right Column Modules section.

15. Sponsored ad placements include the Business Directory, Special Sections, and Featured Services, and will appear on Topic Landing Pages and Article Pages. They will not appear on pages for the Social Network.

Member Homepage

The Member Homepage is the main page that members will go to when they log in. It is their primary access point for all Fast Company content and social networking functionality.

1. The logged-in toolbar is described in the Headers and Footers section.

2. The user should be greeted by name. If the user has uploaded a photo, it should appear here. If there is no photo, then the text will appear flush left -- do not show an icon or other generic image.

3. The top section of the page shows all the activity on the user’s profile since her last login. The system should display up to 999 items. Any numbers higher than that should be represented as 999+.

4. Clicking the number of new messages should take the user to her message inbox.

5. The number of profile views does not link.

6. The number of new member connection requests should take the user to the new member connections page, where she can accept or deny the request.

7. The number of new comments on the user's blog (if there is one) should link to a page that aggregates all the comments.

8. The number of new professional recommendations should take the user to a page where she can see all the people who have recommended her, and delete them if desired.

9. The main actions the user can take from her homepage appear as buttons at the top.

10. The center well is an RSS reader that enables users to see content from Fast Company, as well as from selected external sources. When users click Add Content they will be taken to a page that lets them manage their feeds, selecting additional feeds to display on this page.

11. Based on the user’s stated interests (gathered during registration), the site can recommend additional website feeds. This will be based on tags.

12. The default state of the member homepage will show the standard feeds from Fast Company (The Big Idea, Feature Articles, Member Contributions, and FC Blogs,) as well as one external source (New York Times Business shown here). Users will be permitted to add a maximum of six sources to their homepage. The maximum number of headlines per source is two.

13. Users can delete a source from their page by clicking the [x] close button. This should display a layer confirming the user really wants to delete the source.

14. See More and See All My Feeds should link to the full RSS reader page.

15. Based on the user’s stated interests (gathered during registration), the site can recommend additional groups. This will be based on tags.

16. Recent activity in groups the member belongs to should be highlighted on the member homepage. A maximum of one upcoming event should also be shown.

17. The [x] close button should remove the groups module from the page. This should display a layer confirming the user really wants to delete the module.

18. Based on the user’s stated interests (gathered during registration), the site can recommend additional professional contacts. This will be based on tags.

19. Recent activity by people on the member’s contact list should be highlighted on the member homepage. This activity should include: making a comment on an article, writing a Fast Talk response, writing a blog post, and posting multimedia.

20. The [x] close button should remove the contacts module from the page. This should display a layer confirming the user really wants to delete the module.

21. The My Contacts module should show five recently active contacts. Recent activity could include being online now, writing a Fast Talk post, writing an article comment, or writing a blog post.

22. A checkmark should indicate contacts that the member has also given a professional recommendation to.

23. The See My Network link should take the user to the full list of all their contacts.

24. Find People should link to the member directory.

25. The My Groups module should show a maximum of five groups that the member belongs to. If the user belongs to more than five groups, then See All My Groups should go to the full listing. (This can be shown on a layer or as a full page reload.)

26. Find Groups should link to the groups directory.

27. The Fast Talk module should display the three most recent questions the member has suggested. If there are more than three questions total, then the additional questions should display in a layer (not a full page reload).

28. For the Fast Talk and Fast Answers modules, see the Right Column Modules section.

29. The My Tags module will be automatically generated based on the tags the user has applied to Fast Talk posts, blog posts, the groups that the member belongs to, and the feeds the member subscribes to. See more tags will take users to a page with the top 100 tags.

Group Homepage

The group homepage is the main page for groups. This version shows what a logged-in user who is also a member of the group would see.

1. The top of the page should show the number of people who are members of the group. There should also be a star rating shown. The star rating will be gathered from a monthly survey of group members.

2. The top section of the page shows all the activity in the group since the user’s last login. The system should display up to 999 items. Any numbers higher than that should be represented as 999+.

3. The main actions the user can take from her homepage appear as buttons at the top.

4. The name of the group coordinator should be shown. Groups owned by Fast Company will show a Fast Company editor as the coordinator, so every group will have a coordinator name. If the group coordinator has chosen an icon or logo for the group, then the image should appear here. If there is no image, then the text will appear flush left – do not show an icon or other generic image.

5. The group description, which should be provided by the group coordinator or when new groups are created, should appear here. A maximum of five lines of the description should be shown. See Full Description should link to a page with all the information. (This could also be handled with a layer rather than a full page reload.)

6. Recent activity in this group should be shown on the group homepage. This activity should include: writing a Fast Talk response, writing a group blog post, and posting multimedia. A maximum of two content elements should appear here. See More Content should link to a page displaying all the content from this group in reverse chronological order.

7. The five most recent posts from threaded discussion groups should be shown on the homepage. The title of the post should link to a page that shows all of the posts in reverse chronological order. A large call to action to start a new discussion appears at the top, and links to a page where people can enter a new post. See more discussion topics should link to a landing page that shows the titles of all the topics in reverse chronological order.

8. Upcoming events for the group should be highlighted with a small calendar showing the dates of upcoming events. Any events happening in the next two weeks should also be highlighted, giving users the chance to RSVP. A link to the full events calendar should go to a page where users can browse both future and past events.

9. The articles that have been recommended by members of this group should be shown here. A maximum of three articles should appear. See More Recommendations should link to a page displaying all the articles recommended by people in this group, in reverse chronological order from the date the recommendation was made.

10. Featured Members, Fast Talk, and Popular Tags are all specific to the group and are not the same as on the other pages.

11. Featured members should show only members of the current group.

12. Fast Talk will be administered by the group coordinator, and the questions and answers will be specific only to that group. In other words, all the questions will be proposed by group members and will not be the same questions shown on the rest of the site. If there are no new questions posted in a group for three months, then the Fast Talk module will revert to the module used on the homepage.

13. Popular Tags will show the tags most commonly used by group members. The algorithm will look at commonly used tags, recent tags, and interesting/unusual tags but limited only to tags used by group members. See more tags will take users to a page with the top 100 tags.

How Many Lightbulbs Does it Take to Change the World? One. And You're Looking At It.By: Charles Fishman 1 2 3 4 Next >

Most people have some experience with swirl bulbs, but typically it hasn't been happy. In the early 1990s, you would step into a room in a business traveler's hotel, flip on the lights by the door and between the beds, turn on the desk lamp and the floor lamp, then stand in the gloom looking around and thinking, "There must be another switch somewhere that actually turns on the light." Every one of the bulbs flickering to life was a compact fluorescent--and five of them together didn't provide enough light to read the card listing the lineup of cable-TV channels. For two decades, CFLs lacked precisely what we expect from lightbulbs: strong, unwavering light; quiet; not to mention shapes that actually fit in the places we use bulbs. Now every one of those problems has been conquered. The bulbs come on quickly; their light is bright, white, steady, and silent; and the old U-shaped tubes--they looked like bulbs from a World War II submarine--

have mostly been replaced by the swirl. Since 1985, CFLs have changed as much as cell phones and portable music players. One thing hasn't changed: the energy savings. Compact fluorescents emit the same light as classic incandescents but use 75% or 80% less electricity. What that means is that if every one of 110 million American households bought just one ice-cream-cone bulb, took it home, and screwed it in the place of an ordinary 60-watt bulb, the energy saved would be enough to power a city of 1.5 million people. One bulb swapped out, enough electricity saved to power all the homes in Delaware and Rhode Island. In terms of oil not burned, or greenhouse gases not exhausted into the atmosphere, one bulb is equivalent to taking 1.3 million cars off the roads. That's the law of large numbers--a small action, multiplied by 110 million. The single greatest source of greenhouse gases in the United States is power plants--half our electricity comes from coal plants. One bulb swapped out: enough electricity saved to turn off two entire power plants--or skip building the next two.Just one swirl per home. The typical U.S. house has between 50 and 100 "sockets" (astonish yourself: Go count the bulbs in your house). So what if we all bought and installed two ice-cream-cone bulbs? Five? Fifteen?Says David Goldstein, a PhD physicist, MacArthur "genius" fellow, and senior energy scientist with the Natural Resources Defense Council: "This could be just what the world's been waiting for, for the last 20 years."Swirl bulbs don't just work, they pay for themselves. They use so little power compared with old reliable bulbs, a $3 swirl pays for itself in lower electric bills in about five months. Screw one in, turn it on, and it's not just lighting your living room, it's dropping quarters in your pocket. The advantages pile up in a way to almost make one giddy. Compact fluorescents, even in heavy use, last 5, 7, 10 years. Years. Install one on your 30th birthday; it may be around to help illuminate your 40th.

Sitting humbly on shelves in stores everywhere is a product, priced at less than $3, that will change the world. Soon. It is a fairly ordinary item that nonetheless cuts to the heart of a half-dozen of the most profound, most urgent problems we face. Energy consumption. Rising gasoline costs and electric bills. Greenhouse-gas emissions. Dependence on coal and foreign oil. Global warming. The product is the compact fluorescent lightbulb, a quirky-looking twist of frosted glass. In the energy business, it is called a "CFL," or an "energy saver." One scientist calls it an "ice-cream-cone spiral," because in its most-advanced, most-appealing version, it looks like nothing so much as a cone of swirled soft-serve ice cream.

It's time big businesses got behind to stop global warming. Try the Panasonic Gen IV bulb, it has a color temperature of 5000k so its a nice bright bulb.
