By JOHN W. REINTJES, Fishery Research Biologist. JAMES Y. CHRISTMAS, JR., Marine Biologist. andRICHARD A. COLLINS, Marine Biologist. BUREAU OF COMMERCIAL FISHERIES

'Vhen biological studies of the Atlantic menhaden l'esource were undertaken in 195:", by theMenha.den Investigations of the U.S. Fish and'Wildlife Serviee., and studies of the gulf menhaden resource in 1U57 by the Gulf Coast ReseaJ'chLaboratory unde.r U.S. Fish and W'ildlife Service contract No. 14-19-008-0335, it was recognizedthnt n. review of the literature was flUldamentalin planning the research program. This bibliogrhphy was therefore prepnred to assist investigntors in the conduct of these studies.

The bibliogru.phy deals chiefly with the Ameriean menlmden, Bl'c·vool'fia. ty'i'annu.8 (Lntrobe),and the gulf menhaden, B. l)ld1'o'nus Goode, thespecies of greatest importance to the menhadenindust.ry of the United St.n.t.es. Three additionalspecies occurring in North Ameriea,n wnt-ers n.reincluded: JJ. s'/Il.ithi Hildebrand, a distinct spec.iesof minor importance in the south Atln.ntic region; B. g'lImlc1'i Hildebrand, a similar and dist.inct species of minor importn.nce in the Gulf ofMexico; nud B. brc'l,lc(tudata Goode, a questionn.ble species described from a single collect.ionmade at Noank, COlUl., in 1874. Two n.dditionalspeeies, B. (l'!{.1·t~(t (Agassiz) and B. pcc#nataJenyJ1S, hn.ve been reported from the Atlanticeoast of South America.; the few references, perta.ining to these species, that were twailn.ble. to theauthors luwe been included.

Two genera, Etknliid-itnn Thompson from thePacific coast of South Americn. and Etlww.losCtRegan from the Atlantic const of Africa, aU.houghc.losely nllied to the llleJlhaden, hnve not been in:duded unless reported as ]J"I'e,(·o01,tia.

In review of the literature, ee.rtain criteria wereused to distinguish references that were to be included from those that were to be excluded fromthe work. In genera.l, references pertn.ining todistribution, oceurrence, a,bundance, life history,morphology, ecology, and behavior were included,References concerned with the technologicnl aspects of the fishery and the reduction industry;

daily, monthly, or H-lUlun.l In.nding reports t1J1dstatistics; and popular accounts in t.rade journa.ls,newspapers, and mn.gazines genera.lly were excluded. Included are references occurring inseientific nnd teclmica.llitera.t.ure published beforeand during 1957. A few referenees published in1958 have been included. Genern.lly, ndministrative or project progress re.pOlts hnve been omitted.Mimeographed or similarly duplicated report.s ofan estn.blished series, when principally concernedwith the menhaden, have been included.

Lit.erature respecting the menhadens contninsl'elatively few major contributions. .Many of thereferences mn.ke only n. brief mention or listingof the species, but since the lltune often occurs hIan index it. was considered n.dvisable to include allent.ries, with annotations, to guide the investigator.

The a.rrangement of the references 'is by t"tuthors,listed nlphabetically. If there is more than onell.uthor, entry is made only under the senior aut.hor's name. Each aut.hor's works are listedchronologically by year of publication, and thosepublished in t.he same yem' 'are given alphnbeticalsequence by title. Generfl.lly, pagination is givenonly for the parts of the publicntion fn.ll.il1gwit,hin the scope of the bibliogmphy furnishinginformat.ion on the extent of the reference maoterial. Very brief a.nnotat.ions of the contentsof the publicat.ions are included e.xcept thosewhose titles give a elen)' indication of the eontents.Because the majority of the references concernthe Atlnnt.ie menhaden, or meuha,den generally,annotat.ions on species are given only when speciesother tha.n B. tYI'(t'n'llU8 are concerned,.
