How Wisdom Panel Insights WorksThe process started when you sent a sample to our laboratory, where the DNA was extracted from the cells andexamined for the 321 markers that are used in the test. The results for these markers were sent to a computer, that evaluated them using a program designed to consider all of the pedigree trees that are possible in the lastthree generations. The trees considered include a simple pedigree with a single breed (a likely pure-bred dog), twodifferent breeds at the parental level (a first-generation cross), all the way up to a complex tree with eight differentgreat-grandparent breeds allowed.

Our computer used information from over 185 breeds from our breed database to fill these potential pedigrees. For each of the millions of combinations of ancestry trees built and considered, the computer gave each a scorerepresenting how well that selected combination of breeds matched to your dog’s data. The pedigree with theoverall best score is the one which is shown on the ancestry chart. Only breeds that reached our set confidencethreshold for reporting are reported in the ancestry chart.

The Beagle is a long-established breed, descending from the Foxhound, the Harrier and the Kerry Beagle. They were mostcommonly used for hunting hare, quail and pheasant, although nowadays they also make excellent family dogs and haveeven been used in police work. The origin of the Beagle’s name is debated. Some people believe the name derives fromthe Celtic word “beag,” which means “small” or from the French word “begle,” which means “useless” or “of little value.”The Beagle was introduced to the United States in the 1860’s and the breed was officially recognized by the AmericanKennel Club in 1885.

Beagles have been bred mostly for form and hunting ability and any hound color is permitted on their short coats. Thismeans that Beagles come in a variety of blacks, tans, browns, reds, blue (a silver color), and may be ticked (mottled withwhite) or have white markings or be white with colored spots.

Do you recognize any of these Beagle traits in ANNIE?

The history of the Boxer dates back to nineteenth century Germany, where they were used for hunting deer and boar. The ancestors of the Boxer include the Bullenbeiszer and the Barenbeiszer, which are now both extinct. The crossing ofthose breeds with the English Bulldogs of the 1830’s resulted in the Boxer as we know it today. Boxers were bred to behunting dogs and they earned their name from the “boxing” pose they are known to take when standing on their hindlegs. Later in the breed’s development, it was made apparent that they were also well-suited for herding and the Boxerwas used in more than a few circus acts due to its ability to learn tricks quickly and perform them on command. Thepopularity of Boxers started to increase rapidly in the 1860’s when the German Boxer Klub was founded. At the turn ofthe twentieth century the Boxer made its way to the United States and the American Kennel Club recognized the Boxeras a breed in 1904.

The AKC breed standard for boxers requires that they come only in fawn and brindle (black and brown stripes) with thefawn ranging from a light tan to mahogany and restricts the amount of white seen on the dog. Accepted traits includea black mask commonly seen in the breed. White boxers also have a following; though do not meet the breed standard.

Do you recognize any of these Boxer traits in ANNIE?

Intelligent, hard working, and playful dogs, with a highamount of energy.

Boxers seem to enjoy dog sports such as agility, flyball, rally and competitive obedience.

Eager to learn and respond well to reward-basedtraining using treats and favorite toys.

Tendency to jump up on people, sometimes boxingwith their front feet when doing so.

The Old English Sheepdog was bred to be a sheep herder in the English counties of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset duringthe 1700’s. The large size of the breed is suited to its job of herding sheep on the rugged terrain of south-western Englandduring harsh weather conditions and protecting the sheep from predators. The Old English Sheepdog is intelligentenough to pace itself while herding and knows when to chase a predator and when to guard the flock. The breed’sbackground is a mystery, though there are numerous theories about its ancestors, including origin in England, Scotland,France and even Russia. Traditionally, they were sheared annually, just like the sheep. In the late 1880’s, a prominentPittsburgh industrialist by the name of Wade first started promoting the Old English Sheepdog in the US, and the dog’spopularity grew in higher social classes. It was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1888.

The Old English Sheepdog may be any shade of gray, including gray, grizzle (gray with black hairs), blue (a steel gray) orblue merle (a mottled pattern). These may be solid or particolor with white. Although brown and fawn are discouraged, they are still acceptable.

Do you recognize any of these Old English Sheepdog traits in ANNIE?

Intelligent, active, playful, and usually friendly dogs. Good family dog.

Old English Sheepdogs enjoy dog sports such asagility, herding, retrieving, and obedience.

May be stubborn, but this may be reduced by usingmotivational tools such as treats and favorite toys inreward-based training.
