Jung’s theory of the complex

That madness and creativity share a kinship

Entry points to important universal experiences,

presented in Jung’s The Red Book

Saturday, april 17, 2016 9am – 1:15pm (regiStration beginS at 8:30am) refreShmentS provided

Meaning makes the difference between suffering that opens to experience of something of vital significance and suffering that feels a waste. Finding meaning can lead to the experience that every part of us and our world gets a seat at the table. Our complexes show our path to creativity. Questions confront us: Does meaningfulness exist independently, showing itself to us? Or do we construct it in our symbol-making? In The Red Book Jung discovers that we ordinary human beings are (now) the site of transformation. Transformation happens inside us and between us, not in religious or philosophical figures outside us. We will explore Jung’s notions of healing, including new attention to what Jung calls the psychoid quality of the unconscious.

4 CEUs for psychologists, counselors, and social workers (see registration form)

Meaning Matters

Participants will Learn:

About Jung’s notions of healing and the meaningfulness to which they open us

About contributions we make to others when our engagement with

transformation locates inside us and between us.

About Jung’s notion of the psychoid aspect of the

unconscious

Claire Bauza Lecture SeriesIn 2016 JACO is initiating the Claire Bauza Lecture to be held each spring, featuring a noted Jungian speaker. One of JACO’s founders, Claire has served in numerous capacities over the 27 years of our organi-zation’s existence—as trustee and board chair, creator and manager of our art gallery, program organizer and presenter, financial donor, and ongoing volunteer at-large. JACO dedicates this namesake lecture series to Claire in honor of her devotion, her spirit, and unceasing service to our organization.

Ann Ulanov, M.Div., Ph.D., L.H.D., is the Christiane Brooks Johnson Professor of Psychiatry and Religion, Emerita, at Union Theological Seminary, a psychoanalyst in private practice, and a member of the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association, New York City, and the International Association for Analytical Psychology. Dr. Ulanov is the author of many books, including Attacked by Poison Ivy: A Psychological Understanding, Madness and Creativity, Spiritual Aspects of Clinical Work, and Knots and Their Untying: Essays on Psychological Dilemmas. She received the Gradiva Award for best book in Psychiatry and Religion 2002 from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis for Finding Space: Winnicott, God, and Psychic Reality.

The C.G. Jung Association of Central Ohio (JACO) is an Approved Provider by the State of Ohio

Counselor, Social Worker, MFT Board for Counselors (RCX100022), Social Workers (RSX089104), and by

What Can We do in these difficult times?friday, april 16, 20167pm – 9pm (regiStration beginS at 6:30pm)

The suffering places in our psyches, so intimately related to sufferings in our world, are inextricably related to creativity and service in our shared existence with others. Suffering, madness, and creativity are closely linked. Each of us experiences this connection as a major complex that dogs our lives, despite all our work to relieve it. Questions confront us: What is the life theme this complex is trying to communicate to me? How can I understand, confront, and relate to it in order to live more creatively in service to myself, others, and our world?
