Introducing my school: East Valley Elementary School

Facts about EVES: Located in Fernley, NV, population 19,700 +/- Built in 2006 2014- received 4 star ranking Grades: Pre-K (2 classes) to 4th Grade (4 classes of each grade) Approximately 450 students Full time Librarian/ computer and music teacher Implementing STEM curriculum next year @ all grades

School Demographics:Students with : IEPS: 11% Ell: 6% FR lunch 42%________________________72% Caucasian /

13.5% Hispanic , Latino/

7.5% more than one race/

4% African American, Native American or Asian

My Classroom A past, present, and future look at my classrooms, paired with some quotes from experts that I value.

Reading, Writing, and Language:“A child’s ultimate resource for learning how to read and write is his spoken language.” Marie Clay

My classroom is rich in books, listening and writing centers.

I have books planned for strategies, but I have tons of books for students to read- just to love.

Writing: “I want students to write with passion and ease.” Reggie Routman

Writing is a daily activity that is honored, shared, celebrated, and risk is not a four letter word.

Math: the purpose…is not to teach a system…but (to teach) concepts applied to concrete events. (Piaget)

Math, for the younger students, need to know the whys and not the formulas and that is how I approach all areas with hands-on, manipulatives, discussions, investigations

Classroom management: “Instead of trying to ‘manage’ students, rushing…to putting out fires, we wanted to create routines and procedures that fostered independent literacy behavior…” Gail Boushey and Joan Moser

Science: “Hands on is the best!” My husband, Bob, a geologist.
