Fresh off their NCC victory over Lafayette Jeff, the Lady Kats return to the hardwood

Saturday afternoon to face the Lady Tigers of Peru at Tig-Arena II. JV tipoff is slated for

noon.

The Lady Tigers are 3-4 this season. Peru won their first three games, and then has dropped

four in a row.

Kokomo is 2-4 on the year, having won two of their last three games.

The Tigers 2019-20 roster has two seniors, one junior, four sophomores, and three freshmen.

Peru was 9-12 a year ago. Two starters – Cate Wolfe and Courtlynn Crowe – return for the

Lady Tigers. One other player, Carlee Marburger, also saw action in the Kokomo-Peru game

from a year ago.

Last season, Kokomo defeated Peru 59-44. Only six Tigers saw action in the game.

In their third game of the year, Peru held Whitko to nine (yes, nine!) points in a 48-9 Tiger

victory.

Ironically, in the two games where Peru has scored over 50 points, the Lady Tigers lost both

of those games.

Kokomo has scored over 40 points in a game twice this season. The Lady Kats have won

both.

Peru averages 47.4 points per game while allowing 45.6.

Kokomo and Peru share one common opponent so far this season in Taylor. The Lady Kats

lost to the Lady Titans 43-24 in their season opening game, while Peru fell earlier this week to

the Titans, 67-60 in overtime.

The Sagarin Ratings have Peru as the 259th best team in Indiana and the 75th best in Class 3A.

They list Kokomo as the 321st best in the state and the 95th best in Class 4A.

Kokomo’s six opponents thus far have a combined record of 24-24, while Peru’s seven

opponents sport a 20-32 overall mark.

John Harrell’s website predicts a close game with the Tigers coming out on top 48-46.

Page 4: Anita Roddick - Amazon S3 · The Sagarin Ratings have Peru as the 259th best team in Indiana and the 75th best in Class 3A. They list Kokomo as the 321st best in the state and the

Tomorrow’s girls game between Kokomo and Peru will be the 46th in the series, which dates back

to a 54-39 Wildkats win in 1975-76.

The Lady Kats have dominated the series, winning 38 games to just seven for the Tigers.

Kokomo has won the last 23 games against Peru. The last Tiger win came at Tig-Arena on January

4, 1996. In a 63-59 game that day, the Tigers shot 22 free throws to just three for the Wildkats.

Coach Mike McCroskey’s team was led by the 16 points of Patty Benziger, 15 by Tamie Stiner,

and 14 by Toni Butler. The Lady Kats rebounded nicely and made their way to a state finals

appearance at Market Square Arena.

In the Lady Kats current 23-game winning streak over Peru, the Lady Tigers have been within 10

points of Kokomo on just two occasions, a 48-45 game in the 2008-09 season and a 46-39 contest

in the ’14-’15 season. Kokomo’s average margin of victory has been over 30 points per game in

the streak.

Courtlynn Crowe is the catalyst for this year’s Lady Tigers. She averages 14.6 points per game

while dishing out a team leading 3.6 assists per game and making 4.1 steals a game. She averaged

13.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game last season. She topped the Tigers in scoring

and assists and was their second-leading rebounder.

Also averaging in double figures for the Lady Tigers is 5’4” sophomore Cate Wolfe, who scores at

a rate of 10.1 points per game. She has been in double figures in the scoring column in four of the

Tigers seven games this year with a high of 17 against Caston. Her career best came last year as a

freshman when she poured in 22 against Culver Academies.

The leading rebounder for Peru is 5’9” senior Kelsie Kelley, who averages 9.4 boards per game.

Kelly had a career high of 17 rebounds in Monday’s overtime loss to Taylor.

Courtlynn Crow averages almost 15 shots a game, and Cate Wolfe takes 13.

Peru has made 23three-pointers in seven games. Freshman Logan Mouser and Cate Wolfe have

made 22 of those 23 with each accounting for 11.

Of 105 free throw attempts for Peru this year, Courtlynn Crowe (34) and Kelsie Kelley (32) have

taken the most. No other Lady Tiger has attempted over 15. The problem for the Tigers is that

both Crowe (50%) and Kelley (44%) are neither very good at making them.

David Weeks is now in his 12th season as the leader of the girls basketball program at Peru and will

bring a 103-140 record into Saturday’s game. He has had three winning seasons in his first 11

years at the helm. Weeks, who took over the program from former coach Mike Kennedy in the

2008-09 season, has never beaten the Lady Kats (losing all 11 games) and is 0-5 in games against

the Lady Kats in Tig-Arena, losing by an average of over 23 per game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

January 8, 2004

The Lady Kats jumped out to a 12-4 first quarter lead and never took their foot

off the pedal in rolling to a 58-23 win over the Peru Lady Tigers.

Kokomo outscored Peru in every quarter. The Lady Kats shot 55% from the

field in the second half and ended the evening with 47% accuracy from the

field.

The Lady Kats also took care of the basketball, committing just nine

turnovers. Kokomo forced Peru into 19 miscues and turned those mistakes

into 15 points.

Senior Haylee Deniston led Kokomo in scoring with 14 points, while

classmate Lisa Thompson chipped in with 12. Deniston and sophomore

Whitney Farris topped the rebounding charts with seven each.

Other members of Coach Charlie Hall’s team, which finished with a 19-5

record, included senior Amber Rayle, juniors Melissa Meck, Nicky Patterson,

Ashley Givens, and Chelsea Boller, and sophomores Ashley Richardson,

Olivia Martin, and Audrey McDonald.

Kaydee Miller had eight points and six boards for the Lady Tigers.
