ANIMISTIC THINKING

ANIMISTIC THINKINGNAQIAH PUAADILLI NURASHIKINFARHANA ABDUL MANAFELLIPSE GOH HORNG SHENKU NAZURAH HUSNAHow does a young child perceive the world? Piaget provides a brief overview of the childs conception of reality.

Piaget used one of his favoured techniques simply questioning children about themselves and their views on nature, adults, and other objects and events in their daily lives as seen from their point of view. From these interviews, he and his colleagues identified characteristics of young childrens thinking and how the childs conceptions of reality differ from those of older children and adults.

He identified three important concepts in childrens thought which he termed realism, animism, and artificialism.

(James Fleming,2004)According to Piaget, egocentrism of the young child in preoperational stage leads them to believe that everyone thinks as they do.This leads to the child believing that nature is alive, and controllable and that the whole world shares their feelings and desires. This is a concept of egocentrism known as "animism", the most characteristic of egocentric thought.

Relationship to Egocentricity All three concepts realism, animism, and artificialism clearly reflect the young childs egocentric perceptions of the world.

In the case of animism, the child believes that other objects, people, or animals, all function in the same way as he or she does.animismTHE DEFINITIONAnimism Refers to the attribution of human characteristics such as feelings, thoughts, actions, and intentions, to non-living objects.

Objects that move, such as clouds, the sun and moon, or toy trains and trucks, all may be given such attributes by young children. Preoperational thinkingANALYSISPREOPERATIONAL STAGERESPONDENT 1

Children begin thinking logically about concrete events, but have difficulty understanding abstract or hypothetical concepts.Piaget (1954) considered the concrete stage a major turning point in the child's cognitive development, because it marks the beginning of logical or operational thought.
