Developing the next generation

of animal care, training and

behaviour specialists in

Ireland.

Welcome to AniEd!

AniEd is run by Tara Choules, Anne Rogers and

Lisa Whelan. We are professional and qualified

trainers and behaviourists who have experience

educating both canines and humans.

We have networked with some of the best

training and behaviour professionals around the

world in relation to developing course content

and qualifications that are relevant to the industry

now and in the future.

For three years we have worked on

developing AniEd and our accreditation with

OCN NI. We bring a wealth of knowledge,

contacts and real life experience to AniEd,

sharing this and much more with our learners.

Information Technology Solutions

AniEd, or Animal Education, came into fruition as we recognised the distinct lack of education

and standard of best practice in the developing and fast growing animal care industry.

Most professionals, including ourselves, have had to look to organisations and certifications in

the US or UK for qualifications and education.

This is the first time dog training qualifications from an accredited institution have been offered in

Ireland and this spells a change for the industry here.

The dog training and behaviour industries, and large parts of the animal care industry also, are

unregulated the world over and as such the welfare of dogs and their owners are suffering.

We at AniEd, with our learners, are shaping the industry by equipping the next generation of

professionals with the tools to change the industry from within.

AniEd is an Irish Limited Company (no. 518054) and as accredited provider with OCN NI (no.

NI/60801) offer courses at OCN Levels 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Mission Statement

AniEd is a private

institution providing

accredited education in

the fields of animal care,

training and behaviour.

Our educational ethos is

based in empowering our

learners with critical

thinking skills and the

understanding to promote

welfare friendly

interactions with all

animals.

We endeavor to create an

industry that is

populated by educated

professionals who will

hold the welfare of their

clients, animal and

human, at the forefront.

We believe that education

at all levels (pet owners,

animal welfare volunteers,

animal care professionals)

is the key to improving

animal welfare in Ireland.

Who is OCN NI?

OCN NI is a national Awarding Organisation based in Northern Ireland serving all of

Ireland. They are an education charity and an awarding body working with the

community, with people and with businesses, creating qualifications that enable

communities, business and people to grow and develop.

OCN NI work with their providers to design and develop courses along specific

guidelines.

Their vision is to be recognised and respected as the leading credit based learning and

development body throughout Ireland, promoting social inclusion, wider participation

and community transformation.

Information Technology Solutions

Why OCN NI?

We are delighted to have qualified as a provider with OCN NI after a rigorous QA

process.

OCN NI is the best fit for AniEd and our learners because they offer full support to their

centres with strict guidance on course development yet allowing for the centres’

expertise to be expressed in curriculum writing.

Providers must conform and maintain high standards of QA, particularly in relation to

assessment procedures, which protects you, the learner.

OCN NI levels and credits are compatible to those in Ireland and the UK so as to allow

for ease of progression to higher levels of education should our learners choose to

continue their studies.

Accreditation is becoming increasingly important as this industry strives towards

professionalism and regulation.

For more on OCN NI see their website: www.ocnni.org.uk

What are levels &

credits?

Each unit (or subject) is

awarded a level and credit

value according to the

amount of work and skill

required to satisfy the

assessment criteria.

For example, each credit

at OCN NI Level 4 is

worth about 10 notional

hours of work that might

include lecture time,

practical work, studying

and reading, assessment

work and so on.

If, for example, you are to

embark on a Level 4

course of 5 credit value

you may expect to invest

about 50 hours of study to

complete it.

Credit value at specific

levels is a simple way of

comparing courses and

understanding the value

of work you have

completed.

Accreditation

AniEd is an adult educational institution providing courses in specialist

areas of animal care and animal science.

The underlying emphasis is always to provide the learner with

critical thinking skills to determine their own opinions

and approaches to various topics and tasks.

Learners are provided with high quality resources with

which to complete their study. This includes a Course

Manual (for each Unit) written by tutors who are experts in

the field, and an Assessment Portfolio providing full detail for

completing assessment work.

There are no requirements for learners to purchase materials e.g.

textbooks, as we have used freely available resources to support

course content.

A Learner Handbook and a Moodle Manual will also be

provided that is particular to your chosen course.

Information Technology Solutions

To offer the best support to our learners we use a virtual

learning environment (VLE) called Moodle.

This allows learners to access course resources from

anywhere, at any time and provides a forum through which

learners can interact with one another and tutors.

Moodle has become an important tool for our learners used

to generate discussion, offer mutual support and share ideas

and questions.

Tutors are active participants on Moodle to answer all queries

and support learners.

This course is designed to provide dog trainers and canine professionals with a

working knowledge of the foundations in teaching dogs (and other animals

too!). Learning theory refers to the ways animals learn and when instructing

canines an understanding of conditioning and a range of animal learning types

is a necessity.

This course will look at theory and terminology but the emphasis will always be on how you apply it to

the dogs with whom you work.

Having this basic understanding will allow you to teach dogs any behaviour as well as modifying

unwanted behaviours. This course will help you to become a better trainer of dogs and instructor of

humans alike!

This course is suitable for those currently working and studying

in canine training, for those working in canine care or for

pet owners in serious training with their dogs e.g. sport dogs,

dogs undergoing behaviour modification etc.

All AniEd courses are designed to help our learners enhance their careers, and in

some cases generate an entirely new career, in animal care, training and behaviour.

We continue to support our learners as they progress beyond their chosen course as

they begin to apply their new skills and understanding to helping pets and their

people.

All our course material has been written by tutors who continue to practice and work

in their field, both in the classroom and with clients. Our course material is constantly

updated and added to so as to ensure our learners will always have access to the

most current and relevant information.

We emphasise the importance of professionalism throughout our instruction. Our

aim, at the heart of all we do, is to nurture the development of a new wave within the

animal training and behaviour industries.

As such, we take care to clarify the roles that our courses will help our learners fulfill.

We place importance on learning to recognise when to refer and keep the channels

of communication open with all learners, past and present, so that they always have

somewhere to turn to when they have a question.

Those doing short courses are encouraged to build on that and to continue to

challenge themselves by working towards completing more courses and further

enhancing their careers.

Those working through our CBTT course will

have the tools to operate a dog training

business, with our ongoing support.

But learning never stops

and we will continue to develop

more courses to suit those

at all levels, from entry to

advanced.

Information Technology Solutions

There are only two

professions within the

animal care industry

that are regulated:

veterinary surgeons

and quite recently,

veterinary nurses.

Canine behaviour

work may see

regulation in the

coming years but as

of right now anyone

can call themselves a

‘behaviourist’ or ‘dog

trainer’ or any other

title they so choose.

This is damaging to

the industry, to animal

welfare and

potentially dangerous

to unwitting pet

owners and members

of the public.

AniEd works hard to

educate pet owners

and pet professionals

on safely choosing

animal care

professionals.

Progression

Our courses are designed to encourage the enquiring mind rather than simply learning by rote. Critical thinking, problem solving and organisational abilities are considered core skills. Although Level 4 courses require learners to bring independent study skills we have designed our course material to support a learners growing independence in learning. This will allow learners to gain most benefit from the challenging material they will be faced with as they progress through their chosen course. We are here to support you every step of the way via Moodle, email, phone or in person. Although time during class contact is strictly measured we are always available to meet with a learner for what ever reason at a convenient time. We will always recommend the best course of study for an individual, always setting you up to succeed.

Information Technology Solutions

In order to fully participate in courses learners must have access to the following:

a computer (Windows OS or mac equivalent) with Microsoft Office or equivalent and printer, broadband internet connection, e-mail account etc.

basic computer skills in using Word or similar word processing programs, Spreadsheets e.g. MS Excel, e-mail, internet browsing and so on

stationary and other school supplies

means to record assessment work and upload assessment work to a video sharing site according to assessment guidelines

Some courses will specify the following:

Some courses will require access to one or at least two dogs with which to work who are healthy and dog and people friendly to participate in either/both classroom and assessment activities; these do not have to be your own dogs but you must have permission to use them- if you have any difficulties with this please let us know and we will help you source a dog to work with

some courses will require access to animals of other companion animal species, animals that are healthy and able to participate in assessment activities; these do not have to be your own animals but you must have permission to use them

crate, flat collar, 6 foot nylon or leather leash, treats and toys, water bowls, poo-bags and basic pet care equipment for the dog or pet should you bring them to class activities or use him for course work

suitable outdoor clothing for working with/observing animals such as wet weather gear, suitable comfortable and weatherproof shoes/boots, warm and weatherproof jacket/coat

treat pouch

for some assessment work you may need to travel to relevant locations to carry out work and some locations may charge an admission fee – this is the responsibility of the learner and further details can be obtained from a tutor

Entry Requirements

There are specific entry

requirements for the

CBTT course due to the

heavy workload and

challenging content of

this course.

However, there are no

qualification based

entry requirements for

our short courses.

All applicants must

understand that these

courses are OCN NI

Level 4 which is

equivalent to first year

degree study level.

Therefore a level of

academic ability will be

necessary.

We will of course

provide as much

support as possible for

all learners. We will

soon have courses

available at Level 3 to

aid those wishing to

start studying in this

area.

Studying at this level

Student resources

We are always working on bringing you exciting courses to enhance your career

and keep you challenged!

Coming in early 2014

companion dogs.

These courses are unique in Ireland and will add a new dimension to the skills of

trainers and behaviour professionals here.

All new Level 3 courses for those wishing to work in animal care and for those

wishing to enter the canine training industry.

These courses are specifically designed for those entering the industry and for

those not yet ready to study at Level 4.

Our Level 3 course will have two threads:
