Angola secures Emirates dealAgreement will create a world class Angolan carrier

Emirates and the Republic of Angola, in its capacity as the majority share-holder of TAAG Linhas Aéreas De Angola, announced the signing of a management concession agreement which will see Emirates take a role in the management of TAAG.

The agreement lays the foundation for both airlines to jointly lever-age commercial oppor-tunities in Africa and beyond. The ten year management agree-ment comes as Dubai-based Emirates takes the spot light as now the biggest car-rier in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Emirates’ growing relation-ships within Africa doesn’t come as a surprise. During the first half of this year, Dubai’s total non-oil trade

with Africa reached a value of AED 60 billion (or around US$ 16.3 bil-lion), according to Dubai Customs. The UAE is the main trading part-ner with Africa within the GCC, with approximately 80% of the UAE’s imports from Africa being primary

products, such as food produce and beverages.

In the last two months alone, Dubai’s two main carriers, Emirates and flydubai, have increased their connections from 31 passenger and

cargo destinations in Africa in July to 38 different African destinations by the end of September 2014.

The Emirates-TAAG Angola initiative is to further the Republic of Angola’s vision to create a world class Ango-

lan carrier with the support of Emirates. As part of the agree-ment, Emirates will work closely with the Angolan government and TAAG Angola to formulate and imple-ment a business plan, provide management

Pratt & Whitney will provide exclusive power for up to 50 Bombardier CSeries aircraft ordered by Macquarie AirFinance (part of the global diver-sified financial services institution Macquarie Group) announced on September 29th, by bom-bardier. Macquarie AirFinance intends to take delivery of 40 Bombardier CS300 aircraft, with an option to purchase an additional 10 aircraft. airberlin cancels order for 33 Boeing aircraft

airberlin has reached an agreement with boeing that orders for 18 boeing 737 and 15 boeing 787 aircraft at a price of some $5bn be rescinded. The termination agreement for these 33 aircraft does not include any compensation to Boeing from air-berlin group, and represents a further important step in the gradual harmonisation of the airline’s narrow-body fleet. Ulf Hüttmeyer, Chief Financial Officer at airberlin, said: “Not taking on the 33 aircraft ordered will significantly reduce future capital expenditure for airberlin and improve our balance sheet. Our collaboration with Boeing has always been excellent, and this will remain so. 45 Boeing 737 NG aircraft will remain in service on European short- and medium-haul routes. In order to operate more flexibly in the future and further reduce costs, standardisation of our fleet is a key element of our restructuring”. The tran-sition to a uniform narrow-body fleet should be completed by the end of 2016. airberlin group will continue to dynamically adapt the existing fleet to its needs by purchasing or leasing suitable air-craft, although this will be on a smaller scale than originally planned.

Airbus A350-900 receives EASA Type Certification

The world’s latest generation com-mercial airliner, the A350-900, has received type cer-tification from the European Avia-tion Safety Agency (EASA) on Septem-ber 30th, 2014. The certified air-craft is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWb engines. Fed-eral Aviation Ad-ministration (FAA) certification will follow shortly. The EASA A350-900 Type Certificate was signed by EASA’s Executive Director, Patrick Ky. The document was handed over to Airbus’ Executive Vice President Engineering, Charles Champion and Airbus’ A350 XWB Chief Engineer, Gordon McConnell. “The A350 XWb manufacturing programme has also been innovative and ambitious, aiming for a fully mature aircraft at entry into service and this is what we are proud to be delivering to our first A350 XWB customer, Qatar Airways, before the end of the year. Our fleet of five test aircraft completed the certification campaign, on time, cost and quality. Accumulating more than 2,600 flight test hours, we created and successfully achieved one of the industry’s most thorough and efficient test programmes ever developed for a jetliner,” said Fabrice brégier, Airbus President and CEO.The A350-900 Type Certification comes after successfully finishing a stringent programme of certification trials which has taken its airframe and systems well beyond their design limits to ensure all airworthiness criteria are fully met

but appoint four senior managers to work for TAAG Angola.

According to a statement, both airlines will also cooperate across a wide range of areas including bilateral code-sharing on cargo and passenger services, participation of customers in both airlines’ frequent flyer programmes and passenger and cargo handling. Emirates has also committed to allocate its resources to staff and crew training on best-in-class business and operational processes and systems.

TAAG Angola will additionally explore busi-ness opportunities with dnata, in particular its passenger and cargo handling, flight catering and travel services. dnata, part of the Emir-ates Group, is the largest provider of air travel services in the Middle East and employs about 23,000 staff in 38 countries.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Mak-toum, chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and Group said: “Through this partnership Emirates

aims to provide deeper reach and better connectivity for our passengers in Central and South Africa. At the same time, we see an opportunity for TAAG Linhas Aéreas De Angola passengers to benefit from Emirates’ global network.

Emirates will continue grow-ing our presence in Africa by opening new routes, increas-ing flight frequencies, and up-grading aircraft to meet the increasing demand. Exploring mutually beneficial agreements with estab-lished carriers such as TAAG Linhas Aéreas De Angola is another key strategy. We believe this new partnership will build on the success that we have seen on our Dubai-Luanda service, and also deliver operational and business synergies for both airlines.”

Angola is Africa’s second largest oil producer

with a strong mining sector, and is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, making it an attractive business destination.

Analysts believe the partnership will also be the stepping stone Emirates is looking for in order to push its foray into the South American mar-ket, Brazil in particular where TAAG Angola al-ready has a strong presence.

The acquisition is a strategic bolt-on for Esterline; upon clos-ing, the acquired operations will be integrated into Esterline’s Avionics & Controls business segment. The addition of barco’s high-qual-ity visual processing solutions is expected to enhance Esterline’s position as an innovative supplier of human-machine interface prod-ucts primarily for aerospace customers in both commercial and defence markets. With annual revenues of approximately $200m, this acqui-sition will significantly expand Esterline’s ex-isting business in the display category.

LCI successfully closes $325m secured asset-backed facility

LCI, the aviation leasing division of the Libra Group, has successfully closed a five-year, $325m asset–backed credit facility for its heli-copter-leasing arm LCI Helicopters. The facility was substantially over-subscribed resulting in an enlarged provision to meet demand. An op-tion to increase the facility to $425m was also added. The funds will be used to expand the company’s helicopter fleet. LCI Helicopters, in which KKR Financial Holdings, LLC, holds a minority stake, has been growing at scale since LCI’s entry into the helicopter leasing market in 2012. The commitments for the fa-cility come from a total of eleven lenders from North America, Europe and Asia, including nine new to LCI Helicopters. The transaction was supported by commitments from three main institutions acting as joint lead arrang-ers and bookrunners: CIT Group, Inc., Nomura Corporate Funding Americas, LLC, and bNP Paribas.

First Airbus A400M for Germany runs its engines

The first Airbus A400M new generation airlifter for the German Air Force has begun final tests towards its delivery. The four engines on the aircraft, known as MSN18, were suc-cessfully run simultaneously for the first time on September 28th, at the Airbus Defence and Space Final Assembly Line in Seville, Spain. The A400M will replace the ageing C-160 Transall fleet. The TP400 engines, assembled by Europrop International in Munich, give the A400M nearly eight-times as much installed power as the C-160. It can carry twice the load of its predecessor over intercontinental distances at speeds comparable to more expensive jet aircraft, but still land on short or unprepared airstrips close to the scene of military or humanitarian action.

tion, Lufthansa Pension Trust has agreed to a lock up period of 90 days for its remaining stake. The co-shareholder Air France Finance has committed to a lock up period of 30 days regarding its shares of Amadeus IT Holding, S.A. The disposal of the Amadeus shares is a portfolio management transaction by the pen-sion fund to ensure a balanced asset alloca-tion. In November 2012, as part of the active management of its holdings, Lufthansa trans-ferred a 4% stake in Amadeus IT Holding, S.A. to Lufthansa Pension Trust and furthermore sold 3.61% of the shares of Amadeus IT Hold-ing, S.A. With the sale of the shares, Lufthansa Group generated gross proceeds of €307m in 2012.

easyJet posts revised profit forcast

easyJet reported revenue per seat at constant currency for the three months to September 30th, 2014 is expected to grow by around 1.5% driven by a strong finish to the summer sea-son. Revenue per seat at constant currency for the six months to 30 September 2014 is expected to grow by around 2%. Cost per seat excluding fuel at constant currency for the six

months to 30 September is expected to in-crease by c.0.7%. This strong performance was driven by the continued delivery of easyJet lean initiatives offset by increases in regulated airport charges, navigation and the costs asso-ciated with the increased load factor in the pe-riod. It is expected that easyJet’s unit fuel cost in the six months to 30 September 2014 will be approximately £2m favourable compared to the six months to September 30th, 2013; and that the impact of exchange rate move-ments (including those related to fuel) will be around £15m favourable compared to the six months to September 30th, 2013. The impact of the Air France pilots’ strike in September is expected to increase easyJet’s revenue by £5m as Air France passengers switched to easyJet. This combined with the strong finish to the year means that the board’s expectation is for a pre-tax profit for the twelve months ended September 30th, 2014 of between £575m and £580m compared with the previous guidance of £545m to £570m. In line with its revised dividend policy, easyJet expects to declare a dividend in respect of the year ended Septem-ber 30th, 2014 based on a pay-out ratio of 40% of profit after tax.

Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group Canada provide further support to Roy-al Canadian Air Force

Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group Canada have been subcontracted by Cas-cade Aerospace in relation to the Royal Ca-nadian Air Force’s (RCAF’s) CC130 Avionics Optimized Weapons System Management (AVS OWSM) program. The AVS OWSM pro-gram is one of three contracts planned by Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND) to support the RCAF’s CC130 Hercules legacy transport fleet. The Primary Air Vehi-cle (PAV) OWSM Program, on which Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group Canada is also the engineering subcontractor, has been un-derway since 2006. The AVS OWSM program extends the reach for overall CC130 aircraft lifecycle management, and the contract with Cascade Aerospace will extend until 2016, with options for additional tranches.

Boeing to consolidate defense servic-es and support work in Oklahoma City and St. Louis

boeing will consolidate the majority of its defense services and support-related activi-ties from Washington State to other loca-tions in the U.S. as part of efforts to improve the competitiveness of its boeing Defense, Space & Security unit. The majority of the work will be relocated to Oklahoma City and St. Louis, where similar activities are per-formed today. Some additional work will be shifted to Jacksonville, Fla. and Patuxent Riv-er, Md. The transition could take up to three years to complete and affect about 2,000 employees. Once completed, approximately 900 positions could be added to Oklahoma City and potentially up to 500 positions to St. Louis. “The decision to consolidate these activities was difficult because it affects our employees, their families and their commu-nities,” said Chris Chadwick, boeing Defense, Space & Security President and Chief Execu-tive Officer. “However, this is necessary if we are going to differentiate ourselves from competitors and stay ahead of a rapidly changing global defense environment.” To

the greatest degree feasible, the company will leverage boeing Commercial Airplanes’ presence in Puget Sound to mitigate the im-pact of this decision on individual employ-ees. Even with the announced moves, boe-ing Defense, Space & Security continues a robust presence in the Puget Sound region due to production of the P-8 maritime patrol aircraft and KC-46A Tanker, which are based on the company’s 737 and 767 commercial airplanes. Today the company’s defense business has approximately 5,200 employ-ees in the Puget Sound region.
