From the Revd. Julie As another school term comes to a close, it is time for those involved in our children’s ministry to also have a well earned break. Mainly music and KidsPlus+ continue to have really positive responses from both parents/care givers and the children. On behalf of us all, I thank most heartily those involved in these two programmes as without the volunteers we would not be able to offer them – and each programme provides a very important point of connection with families within our community.

Blessing of the Pets Don’t forget, Sunday 11th October is our special Sunday Service where we are offering a Blessing for your Pet at our regular 9:00 am service. (More details available by looking at the poster on the back page of this newsletter.)

This is a great opportunity to invite a friend along to church.

Chocolate Fundraiser Thanks to all who took part in our chocolate fundraiser. Nearly all the chocolates have been sold (half a box left in the vestry, first in best dressed).

Just waiting to hear back from the treasurer as to the exact amount raised but we are expecting to make approximately $400 net.

A great effort.

Celebration Sunday It was indeed a day of celebration with Bishop Kate joining us for Ian and Joel’s Confirmation, our Patronal Festival, and mainly music’s fifth birthday. It was wonderful to see the families come and give us a demonstration of a mainly music session. I know that Bishop Kate was suitably impressed with the morning! Thank you to all who contributed in so many different ways – both leading up to the morning and during the morning by assisting with the abundant brunch and clearing up afterwards.

Following our Celebration Sunday, Bishop Kate sent the following note:

“Dear people of Holy Cross Thank you for the welcome on Sunday. I enjoyed being with you and celebrating the signs of new life in your parish. Congratulations on 5 years of mainly music.

I look forward to meeting with you again in the course of the ministry we share.

+Kate “

Harvest Festival On Sunday 15th November we are having a Harvest Festival where we are invited to bring an item of non perishable food - or a gift for children, teenagers, adults - to be donated to Christmas hampers. You are also invited to bring something that represents the harvest of your creativity (woodwork, knitting, cooking etc.) to display in front of the altar during the service and then taken home. (Refer to the poster on the inside front cover of this months newsletter.)

This is another opportunity to extend an invitation to church.

Community Partnership Funding We received a letter from the City of Melville regarding the funding that the Parish received last year to assist with the Kids+ program. Some excerpts from the letter:-

“…We have read with interest the benefits your project has brought to the community.

We acknowledge the time and effort you have invested to ensure its successful completion and would like to take this opportunity to extend our warmest wishes and congratulations to you and your team.

Organisations such as yours contribute above and beyond the projects and activities that are provided by grant funding. We recognise your hard work in both volunteers’ hours and dedication.”

Reports Locum I have attended a full day’s Protective Behaviour workshop.

Celebration Sunday seemed to go really well - personally it was a privilege to prepare Ian and Joel for their Confirmation. The response from the mainly music families was very encouraging.

The Mini Market was very successful financially but I am concerned about how labour intensive they are with limited human resources to assist, those who could worked extremely hard – for which we can be very grateful

Is it time to review of the Holy Cross’s Mission Plan – (It as decided at the PC meeting to have a dedicated meeting to take the review before the end of October.)

Warden Problem with the air conditioner in meeting room has been rectified. Rail at tennis court steps hopefully installed soon. Waiting for material to fix door on servery window. City of Melville has been approached to replace church street sign on the corner of Stock and Mclean.

Several younger families have been approached to facilitate the next market on 21st November it will be a Christmas Kids Market - tables to be sold to sellers. Parishioners to focus on the cake stall, sausage sizzle and kids activities.

Parish Council (cont’d) Children’s Ministry Sunday Club, Kidsplus and Mainly Music are all doing very well – supported by hard working dedicated people.

The Way Forward Fresh Expressions Discussions continuing on how to move forward, consultations with people who do not regularly attend Sunday worship but are associated with Holy Cross on how they see Holy Cross and how they think we could grow our community and what they might like as a fresh expression of church. Marketing and growing numbers at Craft Church. Receiving support from others within the diocese seeking to create Fresh Expressions of Church.

General Business All members of PC to attend one session of Protective Behaviours Training

Next Meeting – 11th October 2015

ABM Christmas Cards This year ABM (Anglican Board of Mission) has decided not to print Christmas cards. Instead an eCard will be made available on the ABM website. Cards from previous years will be available for a donation at Synod - or from [email protected]

Protective Behaviours The Diocese has recently provided compulsory training to all licenced clergy on the above topic, and lay leaders will soon be offered similar training. I attended an all day workshop on Tuesday 25 August. Most of us have attended similar workshops over the years but this one was particularly confronting – although extremely helpful.

The training content covered child protection across a number of institutions. However, for the purposes of the Church, perhaps the most positive message that was given from the excellent presenter was that most clergy are doing the right thing. It is just unfortunate that the media focuses significantly on those who aren’t. Of course, whilst not denying the impact on the victims of even one clergyperson or Church leader abusing someone but it is perhaps helpful to remind ourselves that only the abusive cases are reported. Furthermore, whilst sexual abuse within the Church currently has a high profile – evidence strongly supports the fact that the vast majority of abuse does not occur in Churches or institutions. Sadly the majority of reported cases are from within the home – either from a family member or a family friend.

Protective Behaviours (cont’d) The issue of forgiveness and restoration for the offender was discussed. That is, if the Church is about forgiveness and reconciliation – how do we respond to someone who is an offender? The presenter’s salutary response was “Mercy doesn’t protect children. Justice does”.

One of the areas discussed that many of us found extremely helpful was the importance of teaching children the correct anatomical names of their body and the specialness of some parts so they can have greater awareness of when someone tries to do something they shouldn’t. That means also encouraging the parents to speak honestly and openly about the human body. The aim of this approach is to empower the child when confronted by a vulnerable situation.

There is no doubt that the steps being taken to ensure child safety in the Church seem onerous and restricting. However, the presenter of the workshop commended the Anglican Church for being on the front foot with respect to child abuse as we began to address this some years ago. The additional protocols and paperwork are, I’m sure, a small price to pay to ensure our Churches are not only safe – but are known to be safe.

Revd. Julie

Diocesan Synod The annual Perth Diocesan Synod begins with a Eucharist on Friday 2 October. It then continues on Saturday from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm – and then from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm Sunday.

Unfortunately for us south of the river folk, Synod is being held in Mindarie this year so it’s a bit of a trek. However, we’ve had the advantage of it being at All Saints Bullcreek for a number of years so we mustn’t complain! “Synod” comes from the Greek word meaning “walking together”. It now has the sense of an assembly/meeting place. Our Synod is where all the important decisions affecting the Diocese are made. Over 500 clergy and laity gather – and it can actually be an interesting and enjoyable time – except when dealing with legislation! Personally, I think we are very fortunate to have Synod as it really is an opportunity to assemble and walk together as a Diocese – to hear what issues are important at any given time – and to share in fellowship one with another during the breaks.

There is a Visitors Gallery easily accessible for those who are interested to come along and view Synod proceedings at any time.

Hallowe’en? Try another way! Across the centuries there have been two traditional feast days that signal the end of Harvest and the beginning of Winter. They were known under the name of ‘Hallowtide.’ All Saints Day, on November 1, is followed in some traditions by All Souls Day on November 2. Both, to a large degree, have been held to commemorate the lives of past saints and martyrs of Jesus Christ. They are preceded on October 31 by Hallowe’en – a derivation from ‘All Hallows Evening.’

Partly because Hallowe’en heralded the dark days of Winter, it steadily came to adopt a ‘darker’ feel, featuring – along with the traditional carved pumpkins and apple-bobbing – a party atmosphere, geared to children, with play-acting along the lines of goblins, witches and broomsticks. This ethos has been dramatically fed in recent years by films and books teetering on the magical and the occult, to the extent that Hallowe’en today, with the help of massive commercialism, has become Britain’s third biggest festival of the year.

In earlier times these antics could perhaps be accommodated, even adopted, as a piece of fun within the life of a village. But with the growing influx of cultures that are alien to the traditional Christian West, we now have on our doorstep heathen ritual malpractices, ‘honour killings’ and sub-human hatred and terrorist plots that echo Solzhenitsyn’s diagnosis: “The demon of evil like a whirlwind triumphantly circles all five continents of the earth.” What genuine place can Hallowe’en have in all this?

It is timely that churches and Christian groups are now putting on their own creative fun nights on October 31. Just click to the internet to devise yours!

True; evil can feel fun! But - emphasised the French philosopher Simone Weil - it is only FICTIONAL good that is boring and flat, while it is FICTIONAL evil that is attractive and profound. By contrast - she insists - real life turns the tables: “Nothing is so beautiful and wonderful, nothing is so full of sweet and perpetual ecstasy as the GOOD; no desert is so dreary, monotonous and boring as EVIL”

The Rev Dr Gary Bowness continues his tongue-in-cheek letters from ‘Uncle Eustace’ St. James the Least

St. James The Least Of All On what those adverts from parishes wanting clergy REALLY mean

My dear Nephew Darren

So, you are being encouraged to look at adverts for parishes for that happy day when you will have charge of your own church. You wonder if you should look to moving to another part of the country; I suspect it may be better if you look to moving to another planet, as your reputation may not yet have travelled that far.

Reading the specifications that parishes provide, giving a picture of life in their community, need to be read in the same way as estate agents’ specifications for houses for sale. Both demonstrate a triumph of optimism over reality. Let me help you decode some of the statements you will find:

“We look to grow our Sunday School” – We do not have a Sunday School. “We have an enthusiastic choir” – We have a choir totally out of control. “Our youth group is always eager to learn.” - Our youth group experiments with

some strange substances. “The new incumbent should be sympathetic to our musical tradition”- The new

incumbent must be able to play the organ as well as lead the Services. “While cherishing our traditions, we see the need for change” – We always see the

need for change, but alter anything at your peril. “Plans for church renovations are in hand” – The building is in imminent danger of

collapse. “We have a large range of church groups” – You will have to run a large range of

church groups singlehandedly. “The vicarage is being refurbished” – The vicarage is a death trap. Its rising damp

and dangerous electrics will not be fixed for many months yet. “There is opportunity for developing ecumenical relations” – No one in living

memory has ever spoken to clergy of other denominations in our town. “The new incumbent should have a sense of humour” – He or she will need it

when reading this specification.

My dear nephew, caveat emptor. Let the buyer beware!

Your loving uncle, Eustace
