Section R1 (13 marks) Read the following passage and answer all the questions.

Take Your Rubbish Home Thousands of people have tried to climb Mount Everest but this big mountain has a big problem. Many climbers leave rubbish, including tents, plastic and glass. Even food waste is a problem. Cold temperatures mean that a banana skin will freeze and stay there for hundreds of years. Now the government has a new office there and a new rule about rubbish. Everybody who goes up must bring 8kg of rubbish back down as well as their own rubbish. If they don’t, they won’t get back their $4,000 deposit. The new rule began in April. This is the most popular time to go up Mount Everest. In the past, a professional climber named Dawa Sherpa and his team did one clean-up every year in August. They usually found 15 tonnes of rubbish. In November 2012 some of this rubbish was used to make unusual art in the nearby city of Kathmandu. The artists wanted to teach people about the enormous rubbish problem. Climbing Mount Everest is not cheap, but in February 2013 the cost for one person went down from $25,000 to $11,000. This means that more climbers will come in the future. More people means more rubbish but, with this new clean-up plan, people hope the mountain will be free of rubbish in 10 years. The new office is also going to help climbers if they are ill or have an accident, but the office staff can’t help you climb the mountain. You should find a very good guide in the village nearby. If you go, please take your rubbish home! For questions 1–3 please answer in complete sentences. (2 marks each) 1. Why does food waste last a long time on Everest?

2. How much rubbish must climbers bring down in total?

3. In 1992, what did people do with the rubbish in Kathmandu?
