The Interim Rector’s Ramblings

Dear Friends:

This edition of the Angelus is filled with information on the very busy

month of December. There is the Belles of Christmas on the 2nd, the

Advent Soup Supper on the 3rd, Chili and Caroling on the 8th, and a very

special offering by Jane Drichta of the Global Motherhood Initiative, on

Saturday, December 16 at 1:00. Jane will be speaking about her work

among the Yazidi women who are giving birth under the most dire of

circumstances and trauma. This is crucial work. This is holy work. This

is very much Christmas work.

We have romanticized and domesticated Jesus’ birth, but if we read the

Christmas story we will see that it was hard and uncertain and scary.

Mary, being heavily pregnant, having to travel to a distant town, giving

birth in a stable, fleeing from Herod’s wrath to another country-this is

anything but romantic and domestic. I ask that you come to hear Jane

and her stories of hardship and hope. I ask that you share in an afternoon

of reality for women in another place that need your support and prayers.

It may well be the most moving and important thing you do this Advent

and Christmas. It may also make real to you, in a way that you have

never experienced before, the story of the birth of our Lord.

This Advent I hope you will also make time for yourself to sit and wait.

Give yourself permission to slow down and talk with God. Wait with

Mary as she travels to Bethlehem and gives birth to God in the world.

And listen. Listen to the stories of new beginnings born out of difficulty.

Listen for the stories of God entering the world again and again and

again. And then rejoice! Rejoice in a God that loves us so much that

God is named Emmanuel-God with us!

May your Advent waiting give birth to Christmas

rejoicing for God’s amazing gift in Jesus.

Christmas Offering 2017

Each year the Missions committee of Emmanuel designates a charity

or outreach program to receive the offerings from the Christmas Eve

and Christmas Day services. This year, all proceeds will benefit Harris

House.

For over 50 years, Harris House has helped people recover their lives from drug and alcohol addiction and

become healthy and productive individuals. The facility advocates Recovery with Responsibility; its pro-

grams empower clients to take control of their treatment and recovery. Certified counselors guide clients

in creating individual recovery plans to treat the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. Clients also

receive training in employment skills, anger and stress management, and coping with depression and

anxiety.

Harris House’s continuum of care includes outpatient, inpatient, partial hospitalization, as well as transi-

tional housing programs for clients who desire continuing support following treatment. All transitional

housing clients are required to have a job and pay weekly subsidized rent and board. Transitional housing

is available for up to 2 years and provides the structure and support helpful in maintaining long-term

sobriety.

The need for quality substance use disorder treatment continues to grow due to the opioid epidemic. Please

consider supporting this worthy cause. Learn more at: www.harrishousestl.org

Food Center Report For the month of December the Food Center is asking for contributions of Spaghetti sauce to maintain

our shelf stock. Please consider making a donation to assist those of our community in need.

Just drop them in the food basket as you enter the front doors in the narthex on Sunday morning, or

place them in the food basket outside the Food Center on the pew under the parish bulletin board.

Many thanks to the following individuals for their generous gifts to the Food Center in November.

Dorothea Bean Mark & Kiki Jordan

Luray Benson John & Charlotte Martin

CBC High School Debbie Martin

Peg Cooper Laura McCord

Mary DeBenedetti Robert & Judith Weng

Emmanuel Pre-School The College School

Jim & Mary Ann Groetsch

Thanks also to the many anonymous donors!

*A huge thank you to all parishioners and friends who graciously sorted, inspected, and packaged

6,835 food items Friday, November 17 donated by the annual College School Ingathering. Who would

have guessed such a formative, educational, and yet heart-felt event would be so much fun. Mark your

calendars for the Friday before Thanksgiving 2018 if you would like to help and enjoy the students’

bucket brigade, sing-alongs, silly hats, and endless energy.

explaining Festival Flower & Music Offering. At Christmas, a special

opportunity is made available for us at Emmanuel to offer memorial gifts and

gifts of thanksgiving. These gifts enable the Altar Guild to adorn the church

with lilies for the Easter services, poinsettias for the Christmas services, and

are also used to underwrite the cost of the special music. Festival Flower &

Music Offering envelopes are in the pews. If you wish to donate in thanksgiving for or in memory of,

TWO SPECIAL ADVENT OPPORTUNITIES—December 16-17

GLOBAL MOTHERHOOD INITIATVE SPEAKER Saturday, December 16 1:00-3:00 p.m.

One in every five women among the refugee and internally displaced persons population experiences sexual/reproductive violence. Among many communities, such as the Yazidi in northern Iraq, this number is thought to be much higher. The Global Motherhood Initiative (GMI) is a not-for-profit organization that integrates midwifery and mental health care for mothers and children in the Yazidi community and beyond. Find out how you can support the health and healing of these women and their children by joining us in a public discussion

with one of the founders of this amazing organization.

Jane Drichta, co-founder of GMI, will speak about the organization and their work among the Yazidi

women of Northern Iraq. This event is free and open to the public. Jane is the daughter of parishioner,

Audrey Claxton. Jane will also provide the homily on Sunday, December 17 at the 10:00 a.m. service.

Please RSVP to the Saturday event by calling or emailing the office or by visiting our website and

clicking on the event. emmanuelepiscopal.org/event/global-motherhood-initiative/

8th ANNUAL MISS CAROL’S BRUNCH FOR THE HOMELESS

Following the 10:00 a.m. service Sunday, December 17

Carol Bledsoe was one of a kind. She was the friendly face at church on Sunday that

always made you feel welcome. She believed the best in people, and this was evident in

her work. Carol was a parish administrator at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown St.

Louis. Through her work, Carol constantly saw the many needs of the homeless that

sought shelter and help at the Cathedral. Whether it was buying gloves, finding a

resource, or just listening to their stories, she would do her best to meet their needs.

Eventually, Carol convinced a local doughnut shop to donate their day old product, and

a daily breakfast club for the homeless was created. It was called “Club Cathedral.” She

soon became known as “Miss Carol,” a trusted friend of the homeless.

On December 19, 2002, Carol was tragically killed outside of her office by a homeless man she had once

helped. The next year, “Ms. Carol’s Christmas Brunch for the Homeless” was created. Originally, this

brunch was served at the Cathedral for the homeless that Carol cared so deeply for. It was a way to

remember Carol and continue her important mission. For 6 years, the Emmanuel youth group and

members of Christ Church helped at the brunch for the homeless in honor of Carol. We continue that

tradition to honor Carol with our own brunch to raise money for the Miss Carol homeless breakfast

program at the Cathedral that is held every Saturday of the year.

STEWARDSHIP 2017-2018

If you haven’t done so yet, this is a great week to turn in your pledge card! Through giving you help fund

the church’s day-to-day needs. A strong financial base helps Emmanuel go forth so we can glorify God in

community with one another and the world outside our walls. We hope to have all pledge cards in by

mid-December. Thank you!
