Angels We Have Heard on High JAMES CHADWICK, 1862
Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains.
And the mountains in reply, Echoing their joyous strains.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo. Gloria, in excelsis Deo.
Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be?
Which inspire your heavenly song?
Gloria, in excelsis Deo. Gloria, in excelsis Deo.
Come to Bethlehem and see, Christ whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo. Gloria, in excelsis Deo.
See Him in a manger laid, Jesus, Lord of Heaven and earth,
Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, With us sing our Savior's birth.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo. Gloria, in excelsis Deo.

"Angels We Have Heard on High" is a famous song written by James Chadwick in
1862. The lyrics were written to fit the tune of the French hymn, “Les Anges Dans
Nos Campagnes,” which translates to 'The Angels in our Countryside' in English.
Chadwick's lyrics are clearly inspired by but are not a direct translation of the
French song though there are several similarities. It is, therefore, considered a
derivative work.
James Chadwick was born in Ireland in 1813. He was an Anglo-Irish Roman
Catholic priest and second Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle. He is famous for
writing the song, “Angels We Have Heard on High.”
The song's subject is the birth of Jesus Christ as narrated in the Gospel of Luke.
Luke 2:8-15 describes the scene in which shepherds outside Bethlehem encounter
a multitude of angels singing and praising the newborn child, Jesus Christ.
The song is a very popular Christmas carol and appears in hymnals across the
globe. It has also been recorded by a multitude of famous artists including Josh
Groban and Pentatonix.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at
night.
9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they
were terrified.
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for
all the people.
11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and
saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s
go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
