EditorialAnother year marks but

another milestone in the continually expanding horizons of our alma mater is once again added. Indeed, it is a symbol of what we call as the second home to the growing community of Filipinos in Bahrain.

Philippine School (Bahrain)’s 23rd year is marked with the theme, “Unity in Diversity, Sustaining Harmony” celebrating the unique backgrounds of everyone who begins their journey in this humble institution.

Cesar Chavez once wrote, “We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community - and this nation.” Although his cultural background may be different from the environment students enjoy here, it is very uplifting to be assured of how Philippine School (Bahrain) constantly moulds its students in the Filipino culture while integrating the culture of the host country.

This culture is the thread that connects all members of the Philippine School (Bahrain) family. They partake this similarity of carrying the Philippines in their hearts so that they can recognize each other’s differences and instead acknowledge the mutuality that they share.

A Celebration of Differences

The unifying theme of this year’s Founding Anniversary reminds us of this home that encourages us to celebrate diversity because it is our uniqueness that ultimately brings us closer to one another. From the lyrics of this year’s theme song,

Together As One, “Together we’re making every dream come true,” Ang Tanglaw wishes Philippine School (Bahrain) its utmost congratulations for another year. To more dreams coming true! #

Buwan ng Wika tops love for Filipino language and cultureby Eljane T. Francisco, Saood M. Anok, Enriyahn L. Basillote, and Evangeline Neal P. Sales

With the theme, “Filipino: Wikang Mapagbago,”

the Kindergarten and Elementary Grades Department conducted the annual Buwan ng Wika celebration with various activities aimed to convey among students the message of the progressing use of the national language due to the changes in the society.

Kindergarten pupils showed appreciation of the Filipino culture with activities such as the Piyestang Pinoy that allowed the kids to grasp information about Filipino foods and to enjoy eating together through fiesta style. The ‘Read Me A Story’ activities allowed the parents to narrate stories to kindergarten learners in Filipino.

Activities such as pagbabaybay, pagbigkas ng tula, paggawa ng poster at slogan, bugtungan, and Search for Little Lakan and Lakambini inspired the students of the Primary Grades to love the Filipino language and to boost their confidence and sportsmanship in joining school competitions.

The Intermediate Grades Department emphasized activities intended to develop among students their proper use of the Filipino language in written and oral communication. Students purposely participated in the different events namely:

pagbabaybay ng mga salita, paggawa ng poster, pagsulat ng sanaysay, pagkukuwento, paligsahan sa pag-awit, pagbigkas ng tula for grade 4, balagtasan for grade 5, and talumpati for grade 6.

Moreover, the High School Department had a speech contest with themes to encourage the usage of the Filipino language, spoken word poetry contest, essay contest, and a poster-making contest. All activities conducted were especially thought of by the teachers in the languages department to remind the students of their Filipino heritage and national language. #

Reading Month offers haven to PSBby Evangeline Neal P. Sales

Words are in the air as PSBians celebrate their

love for reading in a month-long celebration of the National Reading Month last November.

The fun-filled month was filled with creative and unique activities that engaged the students to share and express their love for the written word, whether it be in the Filipino or English language. Some of the activities of the high school department included making of a Poet-tree in each class and displaying it as a door

design; Word Alley where words chosen by the students with their definitions are hung from the ceiling and are seen throughout the hallways; poster making contest from the Junior High students; three-day book fair; and the bulletin board making contest connected to the celebration’s theme, “The Changing Landscape of the 21st Century Readers”.

The Kindergarten and Elementary Grades Department actively lauded the event with engaging classroom activities

such as story-telling, spelling bee, quiz bee in language and literature, film critiquing, essay writing, and bookmark-making contest.

With the national reading month being jam-packed with excitement and the hustle and bustle of activities, the month of November was a great reminder to the students that any person, young and old, big and small, can equally share their love and passion for words and that anyone can be a great reader. #

PSB Artists shine in Spectraby Evangeline Neal P. Sales

Philippine School (Bahrain)’s creative hands made it once

again as students participated and brought home merits in the annual Spectra Art Competition with flying colors last November 3, 2017 held at The Indian School and hosted by The Indian Community Relief Fund.

The awarding ceremony was held last November 23, 2017 in The Asian School in Tubli. Ang Tanglaw interviewed Eunice Orquia who said that this was her 4th and last Spectra Art Competition. She feels proud of herself and is thankful that she managed to place in the top 25. Even though her goal this year

was to place in the top 3, she is okay with what she got this year and perhaps it was meant to be. When we asked what her advice would be to young upcoming artists like her, she said “Do what you love to do. If you fail just keep on trying lang. If you want to win, it starts with yourself.”#

The Philippine School (Bahrain) community is deeply grieved by the untimely passing of Mr. Lauro R. Querijero, Treasurer, Board of

Governors.

For almost a decade, he exhibited humble and transparent service to the school with his calibre, expertise, and professionalism. Truly, a

pillar of the Alma Mater left a big void in the school management. Yet, his memories of dedicated love for the Filipino community will always

be remembered.

Salute, Mr. Larry! May God’s grace abode you in heaven and give you everlasting peace.

The Gem of PSB: A Man of Merit and ValorDr. Geronimo R. Salem, Jr.’s PSB Story

18 March 1957 – 18 July 2017by Mr. Ryan N. Pastolero

If only national heroes and supreme philosophers are still alive in

today’s modern era, they will be very happy and honored that there was once a man of excellence and gallantry that inspired Philippine School (Bahrain) to be in its glorious distinction today.

*** Philippine School (Bahrain)’s

23 years of responsible service to the Filipino community in the Kingdom of Bahrain is indeed without meaning if not because of a man who carved the school to refine the quality education that the young generation needs. With his words of inspiration, walk of professionalism, and ways of leadership, this principled father of PSB may left his second home with a painful astonishment but with a legacy that will forever be remained in the hearts of every PSBian.

Dr. Geronimo R. Salem, Jr., or “Dr. Salem” as he was fondly called by everybody in school, served Philippine School in 14 dedicated years. If one has to reckon the contributions he did, a bulletin board will never suffice the number of projects and services he had contributed not only to the school and to the Kingdom of Bahrain but to the entire global educational setting as well.

He started his career and passion for education with laudable academic merits setting aside challenges and obstacles that never impeded him to reach his aspirations in life. He graduated his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts in Teaching English, and Doctor of Education with Latin Honors at Saint Mary’s University (SMU) – a noted university in Northern Philippines managed by the CICM Religious Fathers from Belgium. It was in this same reason that SMU trusted his potentials and employed him to serve his Alma Mater from being an English teacher, then to being a School Principal, and to being a Head of the Professional Education Department. He even became a full-

fledged university professor where he taught in the Graduate School with subjects such as Research, Foundation Studies, Business Studies, and the English language. He exhibited no doubts of expertise of also becoming a research or dissertation adviser who honed competencies in research and development.

But aside from that, he never ceased to fulfill his responsibilities as an endearing family man. Aside from being a devoted husband, a thoughtful father, and a supportive grandpa, he managed his family so well that despite of his hectic career, love and faith always reigned supreme in his family. He certainly did not halt from learning and developing his love for education as he also finished Certificate in English Language Teaching at Philippine Normal University and even completed a Certificate in Pedagogy under the consortium of the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium) and Saint Mary’s University (Philippines). His distinctive benevolence for others always blossomed from within as he offered educational scholarships to his relatives and other worthy scholars without thoughts that more blessings and graces will fall back to his family in greater times.

With his purposeful search for professionalism, he fearlessly shunned the opportunities of the Philippines in June 2003 to share his love for education to the Filipino community in Kingdom of Bahrain. He started serving Philippine School (Bahrain) as the Principal until 2013 that in due course steered him up to become the School director from the same year until 2017.

Every PSBian distinguished him to be an ideal leader not only because of his praiseworthy management qualities but because of his self-effacing and optimistic outlook towards life. Everybody always came across a lot of reflections because of his very good preaching moods that

always gave words of wisdom to ponder with in life. He was unique gentleman in a way that he loved reading so much that he accomplished every tasks in his most ingenious ways. He had a lot of strategies in encouraging students to learn well, his staff to perform right, and the parents to participate constantly in molding the learners. He put his heart and soul to whatever purpose he wanted in the academe which now made Philippine School (Bahrain) to be the first Philippine School overseas accredited and recognized by PAASCU.

Truly, every PSBian is more than grateful that once in their lives, they smiled and accepted that life and learning are precious because of a person like Dr. Salem. Everybody is more than lucky to once listen to his promising notion that there is triumph if only you discern how to conquer it in an apt way. And everybody is more than blessed that once along a mystifying era, they held the retiring and generous hands of Dr. Salem that sparkled their delight for education and success.

The gates of heaven surely opened and welcomed him with a smile for he truly lived his sixty gifted years in the world more than the mission that the Creator planned for him. He retired from PSB with an agonizing scar but with a legacy that is and will always be cherished in the lives of every PSBian.

More than thanks, Dr. Salem! Salute!

On the right were the works of the Grade 8 students who made creative silhouettes of the Riffa, Bahrain, and Arad Fort. One grade 9 section, Mapagpunyagi, made their class sojourn of a model of the Bahrain International Circuit. As the tour progresses up a floor, students can see the stairway intricately decorated by Arabic words and their meanings. To the east wing of the building was the sojourn of Grade 9- Mapagkakatiwalaan who made the Bahrain World Trade Center and section Makatarungan who did the Bahrain Financial Harbor. Grade 10 students did the manmade islands of Bahrain with 10- Mapaglingkod proudly showcasing Bahrain Bay, 10-Mapagkalinga showcasing Amwaj Islands, and 10- Mapagkawanggawa showcasing Durrat Al Bahrain.

On the west wing, were the Grade 11 students who welcomed

the students inside their classrooms for their sojourns of the Bahrain and the Dilmun civilization, Bahrain under the Portuguese, Bahrain under the Persians and Bahrain and Islam up to modern Bahrain. There was a station for each period with the Grade 11 students explaining what they had prepared. The tour signals to a close when students see the beautifully decorated doors of the grade 12 classrooms, the grade 12 students had various roles in ensuring the program and celebration of the day, a success. The pupils from the elementary and kindergarten department rode in fun rides and toured around the sojourn prepared by the high school department.

The time spent and the preparation of the students for their creative outputs relating to the celebration of the 46th Bahrain National Day and the enjoyment of those who viewed and appreciated their efforts were the means of uniting both young and old, Filipino and Bahraini, to bring to pass the public sentiment of celebrating both a country and a home. #
