bear’s attention away from them. Andrea looked over the edge of the riverbank. “Grandma, it looks so far down. How are we going to get down there?” she asked, feeling even more scared.

Grandma studied the riverbank. “OK, Andrea, I’m going to go down first, and I want you to come down right behind. Do exactly as I do. Can you be brave for me?”

Andrea paused and looked back at the bear. She nodded. “I’ll be brave.”

Grandma sat down and slowly started sliding down the riverbank, using her hands and feet to slow herself. Andrea watched Grandma closely and slowly started down the steep bank. After a few slips, small cuts, and bruises, Andrea and Grandma made it to the bottom of the riverbank and waded across the shallow river.

“Now we just have to climb up,” Grandma said, grabbing Andrea’s hand. “That should be much easier then climbing down.”

“What about William?” Andrea asked, feeling worried about her brother.

“We will wait for him up there. God will protect him, and he will join us shortly,” Grandma replied, hoping in her heart that she was right.

When William saw that Andrea and Grandma had dropped out of sight down the riverbank, he slowly started to look around him. The bear, still about 50 yards away, started slowly moving toward him. When William saw what he was looking for, he bent down and grabbed a few small, smooth stones. He kept his eyes on the bear. With another quick prayer, William sent a small stone flying through the air toward the bear. It hit the bear on the nose. The bear stopped and looked stunned. William threw another stone before the bear could recover from its shock. The second stone hit the bear right between the eyes. Startled, the bear turned around and headed away from William. William threw one more stone, hitting the bear on the rump. The bear raced back into the trees.

William realized he had been holding his breath. He took a deep breath and prayed again. “Thank You, God, for protecting me and my family.” He made his way toward the riverbank, never taking his eyes off the trees

Andrea’s Scary Hike—Part 2Katee Amen

What happened last week: Andrea, her older brother William, and Grandma went for a hike in the mountains outside of Yellowstone National Park. Andrea had insisted that they pray for their safety because she was worried about bears. William didn’t believe they needed to pray. As they hiked through a beautiful meadow, Andrea’s worst fear was realized when a bear charged out of the forest in front of them.

Andrea clung to her grandma, frozen with fear. William backed up and stood in

front of his sister and grandma to protect them, but he knew he had to get them away from the bear. While he was thinking of what to do, he heard Andrea whisper, “Jesus, please protect us from this bear like You pro-tected David from Goliath.”

An idea popped into William’s head. “Grandma, I need you to take Andrea and slowly back up toward that riverbank. When you get to the bank, climb down and cross the river. It’s not very deep, so you should be able to get to the other side.”

Grandma was hesitant to leave William alone with the bear, but she knew she had to get Andrea to safety. She nodded to William and slowly backed away toward the steep riverbank.

The bear grunted and swung its massive head back and forth. Andrea could not help herself, and she screamed.

William jumped into action. “Hey, over here!” he yelled at the bear, trying to get its attention away from Andrea and Grandma. The bear turned its head toward William and let out a loud huff. In that moment, William did what he had not done in a long

time—he prayed. God, I know I have not talked with You much lately, but please help me save my baby sister and my grandma from this bear. Help me the way You helped David.

Andrea and Grandma finally reached the riverbank after what seemed like a very long time. William had managed to keep the

where the bear had disappeared. When he reached the other side of the

riverbank, Andrea and Grandma were holding hands and praying. “I’m back, and the bear is gone,” he said as he walked up to them.

Andrea sprung toward him and gave him a great big bear hug. “I was so worried about you,” Andrea sobbed. “How did you get the bear to leave?”

“Well, actually, I followed David’s example from the Bible story Dad told us this morning. I asked God for protection, and I threw a few rocks at the bear. It must have scared it enough that it ran away.”

“Wow! Just like David fighting Goliath! God kept you safe!” Andrea exclaimed excitedly, wiping the tears from her eyes.

William gave his sister another squeeze before letting her go. “OK, I think we have had enough excitement for the day. Let’s head back to camp and let the park rangers know they have an aggressive bear hanging out along the trails.”

William, Andrea, and Grandma walked back to camp. When they arrived, they told their parents and grandpa what had happened.

“I’m so glad you are safe!” Mom exclaimed.

Later, when the park ranger came by to check on all the campers for the evening, he asked, “Are you folks doing OK here?” he asked politely.

“Have we got a story for you!” Andrea told him. “Tell him, William.”

William shared their encounter with the grizzly bear. He told the ranger how it had charged at them. He explained how he threw stones at it and how it ran away.

The park ranger, amazed by their story, asked, “Did this bear have a large yellow splotch on its back?”

“Yes, actually, I think it did!” William recalled.

“That’s what I thought. Bears with a yellow splotch have been relocated for being aggressive and getting too close to humans. This bear obviously found its way back. And you said you threw rocks at it to make it go away?” the park ranger asked.

William nodded.“Well, it’s a miracle the bear didn’t charge

again after you threw rocks at it. Normally, that would have just made the bear even angrier,” replied the ranger.

“God was protecting us like He protected David from Goliath!” Andrea added.

The park ranger smiled. “I guess He was! But just promise me that you won’t throw rocks at a bear again, OK? If you ever meet a charging bear again, just drop to the ground, lace your hands around your neck, and play dead. Deal?”

“Deal!” Andrea and William replied together.

Secrets in the SandTammie Burak

P retend that you are going to a lake or to the ocean. Do you think of the warm sun?

Do you think of playing in the water? Or do you think of the sand? It is fun to play in the sand. But have you ever listened to the sand? Some sand squeaks. Some sand will stick to a magnet. And some sand has gems in it. God has put many secrets in the sand.

Would you like to know some of the secrets that hide in the sand? To start your snooping, you need some tools. You need a sifter, a gold pan, and a magnet. You can use any shallow bowl for a gold pan.

Look for pink sand. Some sand is pink or purple because of garnets. Garnets are red, pink, or purple gemstones. They are like clear colored glass. Light shines through them.

How do garnets get into the sand on beaches? Garnets come from under the ground. Some come up in volcanoes from deep in the earth. Scientists look for garnets, but not because they want to collect them. Scientists look for garnets because

sometimes there are diamonds where garnets are found.

Diamonds also come

up in volcanoes from deep in the earth. If you find pink sand, use your sifter. Sift

the sand into your gold pan. Look carefully at the stones left in the sifter. There might be some bigger pink or purple garnets. Put some water in your gold pan. Swirl the water around. Push the bigger pieces of sand out of the pan. Dip the pan in the water and swirl it. Some of the lighter sand will wash out of the pan. Garnets are heavy. They will stay in the pan. Pick out the garnets, and hold them up to the sun. Light will shine through them.

Diamonds are very heavy. Maybe you will find a diamond in the pan! It isn’t likely, but it is possible. Some people have found diamonds along rivers. Diamonds can end up on beaches or even in fields. If diamonds are good quality, they will have no color. But some diamonds are gray, white, blue, yellow, orange, red, green, pink, purple, brown, or black.

Gold is also heavy. You might find gold dust in your pan. Gold looks bright and yellow, even when you shade it from the sun. Hold your hand over the pan to block the

Page 5: Andrea’s Scary Hike—Part 2 · 7/18/2020  · Andrea paused and looked back at the bear. She nodded. “I’ll be brave.” Grandma sat down and slowly started sliding down the

sunlight. Fool’s gold looks dull in the shade. You can test for gold with your magnet

too. Rub your magnet over the bits of rock in your pan. Then look at your magnet. Fool’s gold will stick to your magnet. Gold dust will not stick. It will stay in the pan.

Another heavy mineral that you might find in the bottom of your pan is magnetite. It is black and made of iron. It will also stick to your magnet.

There is another sand treasure that you

can’t find by panning. It is acoustic sand or singing sand. It is sand that makes a sound. You can’t tell if sand will squeak by looking at it. You have to listen for this singing sand.

Drag your feet through damp sand, or

push a pile of sand together quickly with your hands. Singing sand squeaks. The sound it makes is like when you rub your finger across a steamy bathroom mirror. The shape of the grains of singing sand is what makes it special. When the grains rub together, they make sound. Not all sand does this. On different beaches, drag your feet and listen.

Can you count the number of grains of sand in a sand bucket? It would take a long

time. Maybe all day. Can you count the grains of sand on a beach? Not in a lifetime. Can you count all the grains of sand in the world? Never! You could never do it. It would take forever.

The Bible says that God’s thoughts about you are more numerous than the grains of sand in the world. God thinks about you a lot! And His thoughts about

you are worth more than all the diamonds in the world. God thinks about you a lot because He loves you. His thoughts about you are better than diamonds because you are His precious treasure.

“God, your thoughts about me are priceless. No one can possibly add them all up. If I could count them, they would be more than the grains

of sand” (Psalm 139:17, 18, NIrV).

Sam’s Adventure at Cobweb Creek

Jill Nogales

C an we ride our bikes a little farther, Dad?” Sam asked. He took a drink from his

water bottle and wiped his mouth on his sleeve. “Now that we’ve had a break, I’m ready to ride some more.”

Dad smiled. “OK,” he said, “but be sure to put your helmet back on.”

Sam quickly put his water bottle away. After he snapped on his helmet, he and his dad got back on their bikes.

Sam had been looking forward to this bike ride with his dad for weeks. He looked around as they pedaled along the bike path. Up ahead he saw a squirrel leap from branch to branch in a huge tree that shaded the pathway. Then the path curved a bit, and they rode past a field with horses. Sometimes a dog would bark at them as they passed by. It was fun to be outside riding his bike.

Last night a thunderstorm had awakened Sam. Sitting up in bed, he had watched the lightning and listened to the pounding rain. He wondered if the rain would mess up their bike ride. But he was glad that the sky was clear and the sun was shining today.

Looking ahead, Sam could see that the path kept going in a straight line for a while. He decided to pedal extra hard as they rode along this part of the path. He hoped his dad would notice how fast he could go.

Sam was still pedaling hard when he saw something way ahead of them.

“Look, Dad,” Sam said. “It looks like there’s a bridge up ahead!”

“That’s right,” Dad said. “The bike path crosses over Cobweb Creek.”

As they got closer to the creek, Sam could hear roaring water. It didn’t sound like a creek. It sounded like a river. His dad must have heard it too.

“Slow down, Sam,” he called. “The creek is full of rain from last night’s storm. Let’s be careful.”

But Sam kept pedaling. He wanted to see how fast he could ride over the bridge. All of a sudden, his front tire hit a pebble, and he lost his balance. The next thing he knew, his

bike was headed for the edge of the bridge.“Sam, stop!” Dad yelled. It was too late. As the bike skidded, Sam

flipped over the handlebars, fell into the water, and disappeared under the bridge.

The water felt so cold it hurt. Sam tried to kick and swim. But the churning water pulled him down toward the bottom of the creek. He could not see anything in the murky water.

I know You’re watching over me, God, Sam prayed. Please help Dad to find me.

Just then he felt strong arms lifting him up. As soon as his head was above water, Sam gasped for air.

“Are you OK?” Dad asked.Sam nodded as his dad helped him out of

the water. “I think I bumped my elbow on a rock,” he said. “My arm hurts.”

Sam sat down on a grassy area next to the bridge. He was dripping wet. His dad knelt beside him. He checked Sam’s arm.

“Looks like your elbow is bruised,” Dad said. He gently moved Sam’s arm back and forth. “But it’s not broken. You will be OK.”

“I’m sorry, Dad,” Sam said, wiping the water off his face. “I should have obeyed you.”

Dad put his arm around Sam’s shoulders and held him close. “Next time, I hope you will remember to listen to me,” he said. “But for now, I’m just glad you are OK.”

“Me too,” Sam said. “It was pretty scary down in that water. I almost panicked. But I knew you would come get me. I’m

sure glad you still love me even when I mess up.”

“That’s what God does for us,” Dad said. “He keeps right on loving us even when we try to do our own thing. Pretty awesome, huh?”

Sam nodded. He shivered in his wet clothes. And then his teeth started to chatter.

“Hey, we need to get into some dry clothes soon,” Dad said. “Do you think you can ride your bike home?”

“I think so,” Sam said. He stood up and went to pick up his bike. “But we should probably hurry before we get too cold.” Then he turned to his dad with a grin. “Do you think you can keep up with me, Dad?”

Dad smiled back. “I will sure try my best!”

Mission in the Park—Part 1

Debbonnaire Kovacs

The Far-Away Friends are pen pals with Joseph and Mac. This year the Far-Away Friends will help you understand what your Sabbath School lesson can mean for you.

M ichael Arthur Patterson carefully lifted one finger at a time off the holes in his

recorder. Each time he lifted another finger, the note he played was higher. He was practic-ing his scales.

It was pretty boring. He would rather have practiced his new song, “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee,” but there was a place in the song where the notes went up and down, several times, very quickly. He hadn’t had much success with that part, and his teacher had told him that if he practiced his scales, playing a little faster every day, the song would get easier. He reached the C note at the top of the recorder—a little tricky, since he had to switch two fingers for that note—and began putting fingers down again, going back down the recorder and down the scale.

Mike heard feet running up the stairs to his apartment over his dad’s florist shop, Lilies of the Field. Taking the recorder out of his mouth, Mike listened. He was pretty sure the running feet and panting breath belonged to Kenya.

“Hey, Mike! You up here?”Yep. Kenya. “In here. I’m practicing.”“Oh. Well, when can you come out to the

park? We’re all meeting there, and I’m

supposed to bring you.”

Mike opened the face of his special watch. “Nine forty-five,” Kenya said. She was in

a hurry.“Fifteen more minutes, then,” Mike told

her.Kenya sighed impatiently but waited

while Mike played some more scales and then tried his song. Sure enough, it was easier—still not good—but easier.

“That’s pretty, Mike!” Kenya said.“Thanks, but I want to play a lot better

than that.”“Come on, let’s go!” Kenya took Mike’s

arm and walked with him down the stairs and through Lilies of the Field, even though he knew his way around there without any trouble.

“I’ll be at the park, Aunt Rose,” Mike called out.

“OK. Have fun.”When they reached the park, the other

kids were waiting for them. “About time! Come on, we’re going to play silent tag.”

Silent tag was a game they had made up. Everyone except Mike had to close his or her eyes. Whoever was “it” had to try to catch the others by sound alone. The rest had to be silent enough so that the person who was “it” (who no one could see) couldn’t catch them, while they also tried not to run into each other. It was pretty hard. Of course, Mike usually won. Kenya always got caught first because she couldn’t keep from giggling.

They played on the slides, the merry-go-round, and the jungle gym. Finally, too hot to play anymore, they sprawled on the grass in the shade of a big maple tree. Mike

Far-Away Friends inhaled the smell of warm grass and dirt and some nearby roses. He could hear a robin singing in the top of the maple tree and feel a breeze cooling his sweaty face. The wind made him think about the story they had studied for Sabbath School. Rather dreamily, he asked, “Do you think the Holy Spirit is always a big, loud wind like at Pentecost, or do you think He might sometimes be a quiet breeze?”

“I think He’s usually a quiet breeze,” Susannah answered.

“I think He’s more like sunlight.” That was Kenya, the creative thinker. “Because He’s always there and keeps us alive and everything.”

“I don’t think He gives gifts to everybody like Ms. Kimoto said,” Matt said. “At least not until they are grown up. I don’t have any.”

“Yes, you do!” Mike heard Susannah roll over. “You are good with animals, and you can build things.”

“Sure,” Matt scoffed. “With Legos! How can I serve God with plastic robots?”

“Maybe someday you will build a robot missionary,” Mike offered.

Everybody laughed.“Maybe you will build a church in

Africa,” Solly suggested.“Build it in an Arab country,” Kenya put

in. “Then Solly can preach, since he has the gift of languages.”

They laughed again.“Seriously,” Susannah said thoughtfully,

“I’ve been thinking about it. Can’t we think of some kind of project we could do for God? Something that uses all of our different gifts?”

“Well,” Mike pointed out, “mission projects aren’t just for overseas. Right here we have a mission field too.”

Kenya looked around. “Right here in the park?”

Susannah popped upright. “Why not? I have an

idea! Couldn’t we have a

play or a show or

something right here?”“Here?” Solly protested.“Right in front of everybody?” Mike

shivered at the very thought.“Doing what? Building plastic robots?”

Matt demanded.“I think it’s a great idea!” Kenya clapped

her hands. “If we invite our parents, we will have an audience we aren’t scared of, and then if other people want to listen and watch, too, that’s OK. We can sing songs.”

“I’ll write a poem,” Susannah decided. “Mike, you can play your recorder!”

Kenya was getting excited.“Wow, look at the time!” Solly exclaimed.

“I’ve got to go home!”When they realized it was almost

lunchtime, the group broke up quickly.

“Everybody plan something,” Susannah called.

Walking away with Kenya, Mike suddenly thought of something. “Hey, when is this thing supposed to be?”

“How about Sabbath afternoon?”Everyone agreed, although Matt, Solly, and

Mike were still nervous about the whole idea.Well, Mike thought to himself, it’s true we

are supposed to be willing to use our gifts for God. That’s why He gave them to us. I guess if Dad and Aunt Rose are there, it won’t be so bad. But what can I do? I know. Maybe if I practice really hard, I can play my new song.

“Hurry up, Kenya, I have to practice,” he said, quickening his steps.

Did You Hear?

One day when the disciples and friends of Jesus

were praying together, there was a loud, roaring noise from heaven. It

sounded like a terrible wind storm. The roaring filled the

house where they were meeting. Then little flames of fire appeared and sat on

each person’s head! And suddenly, each person in the house began to praise the Lord!

Many people heard the roaring noise and came running to check it out. “What’s

happening here?” the people asked each other. “God said He would pour out His

Spirit,” Peter shouted to the people. “He is doing it!” Peter preached

about Jesus being raised from the dead. And three thousand of

the people who heard him believed in Jesus and were baptized.

This story can teach me that God gives us skills to serve Him.

Did You Hear? Have you ever had to wait for something you

really wanted? Maybe you asked your mom or dad, and they said you had to wait awhile.

Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to His disciples, but they had to wait. When the Holy Spirit came, it was not at all what they had expected.

The city of Jerusalem was spilling over with people.

The dusty streets were clogged with noisy travelers from all over the world. People shouted and pushed their way through the crowds. Donkeys brayed. Babies cried. Thousands of Jews were vis-iting the holy city of Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost.

The disciples and many of the believers were gathered together, worshiping and praying to God. But no one in the group expected the exciting thing that was about to happen! Nothing like it had ever happened before.

Suddenly, a strange sound came from the sky. It sounded like a strong, mighty, rushing wind. But it was not wind. The sound entered and filled the whole house.

Then the sound died away. The believers looked at each other. They saw what looked like tongues of

fire. Spreading through the room, the fire touched each person. The Holy Spirit! The believers were suddenly filled with the Holy Spirit! They were filled with God’s Holy Spirit, just like the prophets of old! They could hardly believe what was happening! And they began to praise the Lord loudly.

The crowd outside the

house grew larger. “Did you hear what I heard?” they asked each other.

Then the crowd heard something different. It sounded as though everyone in the house was talking and shouting at the same time. Now what?

“Quiet! Listen!” A man from Syria flung his arm in the air. “I hear someone in that house speaking my language!”

“I do too!” a traveler from Egypt gasped. “Someone in that house is speaking my language!”

“Nonsense!” a rough voice spoke up. “Those people in that house are just drunk!”

“Drunk! Drunk! Drunk!” some unruly characters chanted.

Peter and the other apostles came out

of the house. Peter began to speak in a very loud voice so everybody could hear him. “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem,”

he began. “Listen to me, and let me tell you what this means. These people are not drunk, as you suppose.”

Peter then told the crowd about Jesus. He told them that Jesus had died for their sins. He told them that Jesus had risen from the dead and was now in heaven. He told them that God would forgive their sins. He promised them that they, too, could receive God’s gift of the Holy Spirit.

The people listened quietly. And many people believed what they heard. About 3,000 people decided to follow Jesus Christ!

The Holy Spirit will fill your life too. He will help you to tell others about Jesus. With whom will you share the good news?
