Program Learning Outcome Reflection
Reflective Leadership
The Reflective Leadership learning outcome expects that students understand leadership
theories and also develop a personal philosophy of leadership, critical self-reflection, and
lifelong learning. The Leadership in Higher Education course was one of the most meaningful
educational experiences I have ever had. It was not necessarily the texts that I read, or the
content that I learned from class activities that made this experience so powerful. Instead, it was
the real life, everyday leadership that I saw in my peers that helped me formulate my ability to
self-reflect, understand leadership, and commit to lifelong learning and development.
The Express Project was the final project for this course, and students were asked to
express in whatever format desired, our understanding of leadership. I have always had an
affinity for words and the use of conversational language. So, it seemed fitting to write and
recite a spoken word piece. This assignment challenged me to critically reflect on my life-long
understanding of leadership, and how it has changed over time. Furthermore, it challenged me to
practice vulnerability and courage with my instructor and my peers. In completing this
assignment, I became more aware of my strength as a conversational and reflective writer.
Additionally, this assignment helped me understand my own power and ability to use my words
to empower others to lead. It also helped me focus on social justice values and how they relate
to ethical decision-making and leadership experiences. In writing the piece, I was able to truly
conceptualize my personal philosophy of socially just and ethical leadership.
In reading this piece, it is clear that my understanding of leadership has changed
throughout my lifetime. I am a self-identified lifelong learner and do not expect that my
leadership philosophy will never change again. I hope that in future professional and educational
experiences, I will continue to understand what it means to be a leader in a global society.
