When I was defending our only senior, Mechael Guess, she hit the ball straight to where I was. It hit me in the face
and my nose bled for thirt y minutes.Hannah Oliver (10) |Weve had our ups and downs, but its altogether been
a really good season and Ive had a lot of fun.Gabriele Greenwald (10) | One practice we all had to run sprints
and we didnt want to, so we all planned to faint when the coach blew t he whistle. We ran more sprints. Sarah
Bircheld (10, #2)

varsity players get pumped for the match. Nonetheless, the game resulted in a loss for the

team after their win against Seneca on Oct. 5, varsity player Jasmyn Hamilton (10, #23) gives

squad plays Seneca, Jamila Bland (9, #17) bumps the ball back to Senecas side, effectively
scoring a point. Photo by Miranda Thompson. 4 DOUBLE TEAM|Varsity players Mechael
Guess (12, #7) and Maya McClendon (10, #3) work together to block the ball against a
defender from Sacred Heart. Maya and I feed off of one another on the cour t. We kind of
have the same mentality; she always has my back, Guess said. Photo by Miranda Thompson.
5 IN THE ZONE|Lowering herself into the ready position, Sarah Bircheld (10,#2) turns
to the referee, waiting for a mix up at the scoring table to be resolved. I love being the
defensive specialist for the JV team, although sometimes my legs and back begin to ache in
mid-game, Bircheld said. Photo by Sally George
The volleyball teams Senior
Night ended with entertainment in
the form of a team dance-off. The
freshman, junior varsity and varsity
teams each choreographed a dance
routine for the contest.
We were asked to come up
with a dance. I know that JV and
varsity practiced hard, but we
only came up with ours an hour
before the competition, Katherine
Stottmann (9) said.
Coach Kyle Wood announced
the winner: the freshman team.
We all saw the freshmen as a
quiet group, and they kept telling us
that their dance was horrible. They
denitely surprised us all, Hannah
Oliver (10) said.
Shakeup
Mechael Guess (12) had a lot on her plate. In
addition to balancing basketball and volleyball,
she was also a Theatre major at the Youth
Performing Arts School (YPAS). Guess felt
most dedicated to volleyball, as she would be
attending the University of Pittsburgh on a
volleyball scholarship the next fall.
Im still not sure what Im going to major
in, but I know Ill play volleyball, Guess said. Right now, I play for a KIVA (Kentucky
Indiana Volleyball Academy) travel team December through June.
Even though her academic future was still unknown, Guess planned to use
what her committed schedule has taught her.
Its really hard to balance my schedule, including learning lines, volleyball/
basketball games, and productions, but if theres one thing that Ive learned that
will help me the most, its the time management skills that will follow me the rest
of my life, Guess said.

Bracing for
mpactITo a dedicated athlete, an injury could change his
or her athletic aspirations, but Emma Roberson (11)
wasnt willing to let two bulging discs and a tilted
pelvis get in the way.
I thought it would end my career, she said. A
torn muscle or a fracture can heal, but a bulging
disc is a lifelong problem. The injuries to her back
and pelvis could have ended her plans of attending
Xavier University for volleyball in the future.
Volleyball is who I am. Its what I do. I dont
know anything different, Roberson said.
She rst learned of her back problems after
injuring herself in P.E. freshman year. My right leg is
shorter than my left. I have a bulging disc in the L4
and L5 lumbar region of my back, and my pelvis is
tilted, she said of her diagnosis.
Robersons mother wanted her to quit playing
volleyball after learning of the permanent damage
that playing through the pain could cause, but for
Roberson, that was never an option.
I tried physical therapy for six months, but that
just made it worse. The doctors decided not to give
me surgery because of how young I was. They pretty
much said I could risk playing through the pain, or
I could quit, Roberson said. It bothers me all the
time, but I wil l never be able to describe myself as a
quitter. All I do is volleyball. I dont have a social life.
I have a team.

Despite injuries to her spine and
pelvis, Emma Roberson will not
accept quitting as an option.
