HIGH QUALITY HEALTH CARE by Bobbie Oglesby

How many times have the Staff and volunteers at the Free Clinic heard me say that during the years I have volunteered there since the first day it opened in 1984 (and, of course, I always added “details, details”, “make sure information is accurate” and “talk to each other”).I made up my mind many years ago to spend my life trying to help others, and volunteering at the Free Clinic has given me that opportunity, with the faithful support of my family. In honor of her birthday in 2000, Mr Kirk Oglesby started Bobbie’s Fund, a resource for incidental expenses related to patients outside of the Free Clinic’s operations budget, including needed but unaffordable necessities like cab fare to or from the clinic (if no ride is available), a medication not on our formulary or medical supplies not stocked by the clinic. Miss Bobbie only had a few requests upon her retirement and one of them was that Bobbie’s Fund was kept going.

On Friday September 25th, the 5th Annual Las Vegas Gala once again magically defied geo-graphical space and appeared in Anderson. The provision of play money encouraged guests to employ their strategies playing poker, craps, Texas Hold’em, blackjack, and roulette.

The menu was no gamble: delicious hors d’oeuvres, delectable dinner buffet offerings, and – to top it all off – a variety of scrumptious desserts.

Guests bid on valuable items such as a French door refrigerator, Captain Fields Charleston Fishing Charter, and a Wild Game Dinner. Sports enthusiasts chose from many one of kind items and several drawings were held for balloon rides, a pole saw and other items.

The event provided food, games, and music for the guests, but the true benefactors are the Free Clinic patients who receive the health care made possible by the supporters the clinic. This year the event raised almost $20,000 providing a much needed infusion of funds for the clinic. (Contributed by guest writer Mary McAllister)

For more information on the 2016 Las Vegas Gala and Sponsorship Opportunities, please contact Barb Baptista at 864-512-7811 or by email at [email protected] or at [email protected].

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with Las Vegas Gala. Many kind individuals contributed in more ways than can be acknowledged. With donors, sponsors, auction donors, and volunteers, it takes a small army

to plan and present an event like the Gala.

Many thanks also to those who donated auction items, food and beverages and services among them Rusty Graves and Floppy’s, Sugar High Bakery, Ron Haskell, Craig & Ala Chapellear and La Luna Aerial Arts. Without the more than 50 volunteers who gave time and expertise, this event could not have been produced.

Dr. Brett Stoll to Dance for the Free Clinic at the 2016 Dancing for our Heroes on April 15th!

Most of you know me as a friend, neighbor, magician, standup comedian, or cardiologist at AnMed Health (well, maybe not so much the magician or comedian). What you may not know is that I am about to embark on a new endeavor for which I will need all of your support — for an organization which truly deserves your support: the Anderson Free Clinic.

I have agreed, with great trepidation, to compete as a “celebrity dancer” with Anderson University student and professional dancer Rebecca Kelley on behalf of the Free Clinic at “Dancing for Our Heroes.” This event, presented by the Greater Anderson Rotary Club on Friday, April 15 at the Civic Center of Anderson (and sold out for the past five years), is based on the popular television show “Dancing with the Stars.” Rebecca and I will be performing to a hit song from the 80s.

Since I have two left feet and little chance of winning the Judges’ Choice award based on my dance moves, I plan to win the People’s Choice award, given to the dancers who raise the most money for their charity. Here’s how you can help:

• Send a check payable to the Anderson Free Clinic with “Dr. Stoll/Dancing for Our Heroes”written on the memo line. Mailing address: PO Box 728, Anderson, SC 29622.

• Donate online at www.andersonfreeclinic.org/donations. Make sure to check the “In Honor of”box and list “Dr. Stoll/Dancing for Our Heroes.”

• Buy a ticket (at PIP Printing, 1005 North Fant Street) and bring dollar bills or checks to the event.Make lots of noise to cheer me on!

I thank you in advance. Any support you give will help alleviate my embarrassment in equal measure on April 15!
