organization. Mr. Cones was presented with a President’s Award at the Annual Awards Gala in San Marcos last October during 2012 Conven-tion.
HISTORYCourthouseDirect.com and its sister company Courthouse Specialists have been providing abstracting and online access to real property records for surveyors in Texas since 1982. Court-house Specialists specializes in providing re-search for boundary surveys and complex public and private right of way projects.
CourthouseDirect.com was the first company in the nation to put a Grantor Grantee on the internet (Harris County) and has been a leader in changing the way many surveyors do busi-ness. Instead of hiring an outside firm to perform a subject and adjoiner search most surveyors are now doing it themselves by using Courthouse-Direct.com, county websites, or other websites. CourthouseDirect.com’s Grantor Grantee indexes are free to use, and there are currently more than 100 counties available and more on the way.
Mr. Cones said what differentiates CourthouseDi-rect.com from other sites is the ability to perform a “sub-search.” For example, when researching a common name like, “City of Houston” or “John Smith,” surveyors can match a party, subdivision or survey name in the sub-search field, which reduces research time substantially.
CourthouseDirect.com is the largest provider of Title Plant facilities for title insurance companies (per Texas Department of Insurance statistics) and owns the largest repository of historical Real Property records in Texas. Much of this informa-tion is available to surveyors in the, “Historical Documents and Plats” portion of the site. Sub-scribers are able to choose a county and view a free Map or Deed, and if they choose to down-load the document there is a nominal fee.
WHAT’S NEW?CourthouseDirect.com recently introduced a new GIS services to its website in eight counties within the Houston and Dallas metropolitan mar-kets and plans to expand this service throughout the state. Current layers include Tax Maps, Tax Records, New Sales Data, Deed information and Google satellite imaging.
Instead of generating multiple tax printouts from the Appraisal District the CourthouseDirect.com GIS site allows surveyors to combine several tax records into a free “Basic Report.” For those needing to perform right of entry or need to
Merit Badge program.
Several TSPS members from around the state regularly present surveying merit badge courses, and a few help young Cub Scouts with the surveying portion of the Engineering Pins. And while these active youth are goal-oriented, seeking advancement in their Scouting activities, they are learning first-hand surveying skills while being introduced to the professionals who make survey-ing their livelihood.
And could there be a better captive audience than Scouts?
"Scouts are a really great resource, and they are naturally inclined to get out into nature and work in the field and the evironment, and to work in the office," said Bill Forshey, RPLS #5047, PE #71171, a longtime volunteer and 4-year Scouting Coordinator.
"And they're always looking for opportunities to earn merit badges."
One of those opportunities will be September 20-22 during a S.T.E.M (Science-Technology-Engi-neering-Math) Campout at Lost Pines Scout Reservation in Bastrop, hosted by the Scouts' Capital Area Council. Volunteers are encouraged to contact Mike McMinn, RPLS #4267, at [email protected] for more details.
A recent Scouting event in Houston, however, may be the granddaddy of them all. The 2013 Sam Houston Area Council Scout Fair, held April 13 at Reliant Arena, is considered the largest in the nation and attracted around 30,000 attendees this year. Two surveyors from the TSPS Gulf Coast Chapter 9, Jib Ahmad, RPLS #6183, and Aaron Bohls, SIT #6952, were on hand to lead Merit Badge classes.
"I do this about year for Chapter 9," Ahmad said. "I'm a Scoutmaster ... and both of my sons are Eagle Scouts."
Ahmad has taught his surveying Merit Badge course for five years. While the Boy Scouts Survey-ing Merit Badge comes with strict guidelines about specific topics that must be covered, Ahmad has personalized his course over the years, including field work in the morning, with map study and legal description writing in the afternoon. Typically, scouts meet him at Memorial Park in Houston to begin the field work.
"They love the maps and the technology," he said. "We look at the old instruments and transits and talk about the history. Some of the kids are really good in math, and we talk to them about the surveying profession and getting a 4-year degree. Several already want to go into engineering."
It's not difficult to get involved either, Ahmad said. For more information on presenting a Merit Badge program in Surveying, contact him at [email protected].
Aaron Bohls works the booth at the Sam Houston Area Council Scout Fair.

CourthouseDirect.com is currently working to link recorded subdivision maps and vesting deeds to the Basic Report which, according to Mr. Cones, will substantially reduce the time it takes for surveyors to perform their research.
TSPS & COURTHOUSEDIRECT.COM“We have a high regard for land surveyors and appreciate the work they do every day to make land records better and more accurate,” Cones said. “Sometimes surveyors are under appreci-ated, but everyone from Title Agents, Landmen, Abstractors, Right-of-Way Agents, Appraisers

Each seminar participant should bring: clothing and footwear suitable for field surveying in rough terrain; personal field gear; calculator (any type), scratch pad, etc.; triangles, scale and a 24” straight edge; comfortable, casual wear for evenings. September weather in southwest Texas is unpredictable, please be prepared for any eventuality. Those having personal GPS equipment may bring portable units if they so desire. Participants should be physically able to hike steep grades on unimproved routes in varying weather conditions, which may include temperatures in the 90-105 degree range.
This 2 1/2 day, hands-on seminar takes place in a beautiful setting on the pristine Frio River near Garner State Park at the 15,000 acre historic Annandale Ranch in the Texas Hill Country.
This unique interactive experience is presented and led by some of the state’s most highly experienced practicing Licensed State Land Surveyors.
Participants who attend will:
♦ Participate in the determination of the gradient boundary of the Frio River.
♦ Capitalize on techniques for determining corner search positions learned over years of experience.
♦ Appropriately apply the field evidence to final original survey construction to legally establish missing or obliterated corners.
♦ Review landmark court cases that were the basis for the current dignity of calls in regard to retracing original survey corners.
♦ Examine ancient trees in search of survey witness marks called for in the original survey field notes.
♦ Seek and find original rock mounds set in the 1800s that remain virtually undisturbed and in their original position.

Spencer McIntosh and Jamie Gillis held a 4 hour presentation July 19 on “Land Surveying as a Career” for a group of more than 20 teachers during their annual TIVA conference.
TIVA is the professional organization for Career and Technical Educators certified in Trade & Industrial Education.
Topics such as “What Surveyors Do,” “Op-portunities in Land Surveying,” “SkillsUSA,” “Trig*Star,” and “Incorporating Surveying into a High School Curriculum” were covered.
In addition, the educators had an opportunity for a hands-on demonstration of the latest in surveying technology. The presentation was very well received, and TSPS has been asked to return again next year, Gillis said.
A number of educators expressed interest in en-tering a team in the “Land Surveying” competi-tion for SkillsUSA and will be contacting TSPS members in their local areas for help. Equip-ment is available for schools that are looking to get involved; please email Spencer McIntosh: [email protected] for additional information.

Surveyors enjoy some of the lowest workers’ compensation rates in Texas. Of the 410 WC classifications, the state benchmark rate for surveyors is the 5th least expensive at $.50 per $100 of payroll.
Who is less?
Attorneys are the lowest at $.17, followed by accountants at $.18 and clerical employees at $.30. The most expensive is cotton gin employees at $23.81 (23.81% of their payroll cost!).
Sometimes surveyors DO get a break!

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is taking the lead in filling high-paying geospatial jobs around the world. The University’s Conrad Blucher Institute has recently signed two agree-ments with universities in China and Russia to provide qualified, four-year degreed surveyors opportunities to enroll in the Master of Science in Geo-spatial Survey Engineering program (see video at http://gisc.tamucc.edu/) at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The United States Department of Labor predicts a severe deficit of skilled workers with graduate degrees in Geospatial Sciences. In Texas, there are more practicing surveyors over the age of 70 than under the age of 40.
“Unless we start filling these positions soon, the U.S. could fall way behind in the competition,” said Dr. Gary Jeffress, Director of the Conrad Blucher Institute (CBI) at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and a past TSPS President (1999). “Future world markets will be dominated by those countries with the best educated work-force.”
Through these newly-signed agreements, the CBI has found a solution to address the shortage of expertise in these fields. This will allow graduates to either fill jobs here in the U.S. or return to their home country.
Geospatial Surveying Engineering and Geo-graphic Information Science involve the use of scientific and mathemati-cal principles to model the Earth. These professionals collect geospatial and land surveying data as well as other information resources to create manageable maps and databases for display and analysis that are needed throughout the world. For example, surveyors provide information to be utilized by the latest GPS navigations systems; to help monitor coastal threats such as hurricanes and beach erosion; and to assist with NASA-sponsored research and recovery efforts.
“The Conrad Blucher Institute has officially made a name for itself world-wide for training and educating the next generation of professional land

surveyors and GIS professionals,” said Jeffress. “These international programs are designed to prepare all students to be productive in the ever-expanding global economy.”
Jeffress and Dr. Lucy Huang of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi arranged an agreement with Jiangxi Normal University in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province,
China, in 2012 that would allow advanced Chinese students to enter into the five-year combined Bachelor’s and Master’s degree program. Later that year, Jeffress arranged a cooperative agreement between the Moscow State University Cartography and Geodesy and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The agreements were signed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi President and CEO, Dr. Flavius Killebrew.
Jeffress is in talks with Moscow State University to explore education and research opportunity with the University and the CBI.
“Their goal is to send 10 to 12 students as early as summer 2014 for the first of many collaborative
educational activities in partnership with the Conrad Blucher Institute,” said Jeffress.
Jeffress is also exploring opportunities for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to teach short courses in Moscow as early as 2014.

Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying meeting August 2, 2013 9:00 am.
All members of the Board were present along with the Executive Director, the Assistant Attorney General, and the Board Investigator. The Executive Director and Board Investigator had no reports.
The TBPLS board voted to approve the new proposed rules. They said the rules should be published in the Texas Register this Friday (Au-gust 9). The rules become effective 20 days after publication.
New committee chairs have been appointed:Jon Hodde Executive Committee ChairMary Chruszczak Rules Committee ChairJon Hodde RPLS/SIT Examination Committee ChairBill O’Hara LSLS Examination Committee ChairPaul Kwan Continuing Education Committee ChairBill O’Hara Oil Well Issues Committee ChairBill Merten Legislative Needs Committee Chair
There was quite a lot of discussion about the SIT application process for the NCEES FS exam in 2014. The exam will be computer based, and the applicant will apply directly with NCEES with prior board approval. There may need to be some slight changes to the Act in the next legislative session.
Bill O’Hara and Jon Hodde gave a joint report on Oil Well activity. Texas has 50% of the rig count in the United States.
There was some discussion on TSPS’s suggestion of Round Table meetings.
The next meeting will be October 31, 2013 at 1:30 pm in Arlington at the 62nd Annual TSPS Convention and Tech Expo.
There is also a meeting scheduled for December 13, 2013 at 10:00 am. in Austin.
