Warm-Up: Monday

1. In your own words, write a definition for volume.

__________________________________________________________________2. What units do we use to measure

volume? ______________

1. What is matter?Matter is anything that has mass & takes up space.

Page 5: and Volume Review Properties of Mass Phases and · 1) A state of matter in which particles are cooled to near absolute zero. Particles are super unexcited. 2) A substance that has

2. Identify, describe, and draw (using molecules) the 5 phases of matter

States of Matter

Definition Drawing

1) A state of matter in which particles are cooled to near absolute zero. Particles are super unexcited.

2) A substance that has a definite shape and definite volume.

3) A substance that has a definite volume but does not have a definite shape.

4) a substance that does how have a definite volume or shape.

5) A state of matter made up of charged & uncharged particles and free electrons.

Boze-Einstein

Liquid

Gas

Plasma

Drawings should include what the molecules look like in each phase

3. What effect does adding energy have on a solid? Explain what happens to both the entire solid and the particles that make it up.

As the solid is heated, the particles begin to move quicker and quick as more heat is applied. When the solid reaches its melting point, the rigid structure begins to break free and the substance changes from a solid to a liquid.

4. What effect does removing energy have on a gas? Explain what happens to both the entiresolid and the particles that make it up.

As the gas loses energy, the particles begin to move slower. When the gas reaches its condensation point, the loosely based structure begins to reform the substance changes from a gas to a liquid.

5. Describe each of the following phase changes:Melting Point The temperature at which a substance changes from a ______ to a ______.

Freezing Point The temperature at which a substance changes from a ______ to a ______.

Boiling Point The temperature at which a substance changes from a ______ to a ______.

Condensation Point The temperature at which a substance changes from a ______ to a ______.

Sublimation The temperature at which a substance direction from a ______ to a ______. It skips the ______ phase.

Deposition The temperature at which a substance directly from a ______ to a ______. It skips the ______ phase.

6. What are properties of matter?

Scientists classify matter based on its physical & chemical properties that have been observed & tested

Examples: Color, density, shape, boiling point, mass, etc..

7. Define physical properties and give at least 5 examples.

A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. Some examples include: color shape, texture, etc.

8. What is the difference between mass & volume?

Measuring Matter

Definition How Do We Measure It?

Mass

Volume

The measure of the amount of matter in a substance or an object.

The measure of the amount of space something takes up.

Pan Balance or electronic scale. Units: grams/kilograms

Ruler or graduated cylinder. Units: cubic centimeters, liters, milliliters

9. How do you find the volume of an irregular shape? Briefly explain the process.

Water Displacement: Measure an easy amount of water in a graduated cylinder. Add the object so it sinks, measure water level again. To find the volume of the object, subtract the new water level from the original water level. .
