“The great day of the Lord is near,... that day will be a day of wrath.”

Zephaniah 1:14

Zephaniah carried a message to the people of the SouthernKingdom, Judah, during the reign of Josiah. He told them the Dayof the Lord was coming and the sins of the people would bejudged. Because of his prophecy, reform did take place duringJosiah’s reign, but not enough. Zephaniah did go on to say thatafter Judah was chastened, God would restore His people andthere would be a day of blessing. This blessing was to be in theform of a Messiah.

“At that time I will gather you;at that time I will bring you home.”

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 36 page 4

A long time ago ...

a young teenage boy named Daniel were taken captive alongwith many others who lived in Judah. Daniel, along with his threefriends who were later renamed Shadrach, Meshach andAbednego, were part of a group of educated Israelites to bebrought to the king’s palace. There they were to be trained forthree years in the language and literature of Babylonians. Whilein training, the king provide them with a portion of food and winelike that he ate. To eat this food would be against the Law ofMoses. Daniel asked the chief official for permission not to dis-obey the law of his people in this way. At first the official wasafraid to grant this request since he was afraid Daniel and hisfriends would not look as well nourished as the others. Danielconvinced him to allow them to try it for ten days. At the end ofthat time, Daniel and his friends looked healthier than the otheryoung men who ate the royal food. From then on they wereserved only vegetables. God blessed these four young men bygiving them knowledge and understanding. To Daniel was alsogiven the gift of understanding visions and dreams. These giftsserved him well as he ministered to three different kings in thispagan country. He along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednegowere chosen by King Nebuchadnezzar to enter the king’s servicein the palace. There they grew in favor with the king. After inter-preting King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream correctly, Daniel was ele-vated to ruler over the entire providence of Babylon and his threefriends were appointed administrators over the same provi-dence.All went well with Daniel for several years until Darius wasmade king. “Darius appointed 120 satraps to rule throughout thekingdom, with three administrators over them, one of whom was

Daniel.” (Daniel 6:1-2) Daniel did so well that the king planned toput him in charge over the entire kingdom. This made the otheradministrators and satraps jealous and they tried to find himdoing something wrong so they could discredit him. But Danielwas trustworthy so they could find nothing wrong. They then plot-ted to trap him by convincing the king that anyone that prayed toany god or man for thirty days other than Darius would be throwninto a lion’s den. King Darius liked the idea of all in his kingdompraying to him, so he signed the decree. As was expected, thesewicked men found Daniel praying to God and asking for His help. They hurriedly told the king of Daniel’s disobedience to hisdecree. King Darius sadly gave the order and Daniel was throwninto the lion’s den. That night the king could neither eat nor sleep.Early the next morning he hurried to the lion’s den. He called out,“Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you servecontinually, been able to rescue you from the lions?” (vs. 20)Daniel answered that God had sent an angel to shut the mouthsof the lions so they would not hurt him. The joyful king orderedDaniel to be removed out of the den and the men who had false-ly accused him to be thrown in. The king then issued a newdecree that all of the people in his kingdom must worship the Godof Daniel.

What we can learn from the story

Daniel showed great courage and integrity throughout his life.Even as a young man he followed the laws of his faith. He did notcompromise his beliefs and he was blessed by God for hiscourage. Daniel risked his life in order to honor God and God pro-tected him from the mighty lions. When you chose to obey God’slaws, He will bless and protect you.

Daniel lived in Judah and was a young teenager when theBabylonian army destroyed the city of Jerusalem. He wasbrought to Babylon in the first group of captives and remainedthere the entire seventy years God’s people were in captivity. Hewas originally from a family of nobility because he was “withoutphysical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind oflearning, well informed, and quick to understand” (Daniel 1:4).He and others from this upper class were brought directly to thepalace were they would be trained in the culture of Babylon to,perhaps, be chosen to serve the king directly. Daniel did verywell there and quickly grew in favor with King Nebuchadnezzar.Throughout his service in the royal palace, Daniel continued tohonor and obey God. The prophet Ezekiel, a contemporary ofDaniel, compared his righteousness to Noah’s and to Job’s.Ezekiel set Daniel up as the standard with which to measurewisdom (Ezekiel 14:14, 20; 28:3). His example of commitmentwas a testimony to the other captive Israelites and helped renewtheir faith in God.

TEACHER’S PRAYER:Dear Lord. This week we are studying three young men who, again, showus the importance of following their faith in spite of facing certain death!Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego are powerful examples of those who willnot compromise their belief in You for the sake of what others might do. Lord,I want that same unshakable faith that will give me the courage to faceuncertainty when told to do something that is contrary to what I know is theright thing to do! Help me to say just the right words so my students learnthe importance of this quality in their own lives.

“ Give careful thought to your ways. Go up intothe mountains and bring down timber and buildthe house, so I may be honored,” says the Lord.”

Haggai 1:7b-8

The book of Haggai was written after God’s people returned toJerusalem from being held captive in Babylonia. When the Jewsfirst returned to Jerusalem, they excitedly began the rebuilding ofthe Temple. But after sixteen years their work remained incom-plete. They became busy clearing land to plant new crops and tobuild new homes. Haggai told them they did not care about Godor they would put the rebuilding of the Temple first. Haggaireminded them of God’s special promise to bless them. He alsoreminded them that difficulties occurred when people placedtheir selfish interests before God. When people seek to do God’swill, He would bring them joy. Haggai’s message was simple. Allthey needed to have was renewed courage in Him, renewed holi-ness of life, and renewed faith in the God who controls the future.God’s people listened and started the work on the Temple again.

A long time ago ...

the faith of Daniel’s three friends Shadrach, Meshach andAbednego was put to the test. These three young men werebrought to Babylon along with Daniel and others of nobility fromJerusalem. They, along with Daniel, had refused to eat the foodprescribed by King Nebuchadnezzar because it was against theLaw of Moses for them to eat it. As Daniel they excelled in theirstudies and rose in position in Babylon.

One day King Nebuchadnezzar decided to build a golden idolwhich stood ninety feet high and nine feet wide. When it was fin-ished, he ordered all of the officials in the kingdom to worship it.“This is what you are commanded to do. ... As soon as you hearthe sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipes and all kindsof music, you must fall down and worship the image of gold thatKing Nebuchadnezzar has set up. Whoever does not fall downand worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace”(Daniel 3:4-6). But Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego would notfall down and worship the idol. They were being true to the onetrue God. Some men who despised the Jews told the king thatthe three friends would not follow his laws to worship the idol. The king was furious and ordered the three be brought beforehim. He asked if it was true that they did not do as he com-manded. When they said yes, he warned them that they wouldbe thrown into the fiery furnace and asked what god would res-cue them from his hand? Again the young men refused to wor-ship the idol. The angry king ordered the furnace heated seventimes hotter than usual and Shadrach, Meshach and Abednegoto be thrown in. The furnace was heated so hot, the flames killed

the soldiers who threw them in! As King Nebuchadnezzar lookedon, he leaped to his feet to surprise! Instead of seeing the threemen burning, he saw four men walking around the fire, unboundand unharmed! The King went on to say that the fourth man“looks like a son of gods (vs. 25). Nebuchadnezzar went to thedoor of the furnace and called Shadrach, Meshach andAbednego to come out. Then the king said,

“Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,

who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way.”

Daniel 3:28-29

What we can learn from the story

King Nebuchadnezzar was not one of God’s chosen people, yetGod cared for him and used him to protect His people during theearly days of their captivity in Babylon. Certainly God’s rescue ofHis three faithful servants was an important part of this story, butso was the fact that they were willing to give up their lives for theirbelief.

Most of you will never be asked to so dramatically demonstrateour faith in God by being willing to die for it. However each of youwill need to make a definitive stand for God in one way or anoth-er. Will you be as courageous as Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach andAbednego when you are tested?

Page 27: €¦ · and Value Keepers of the Bible. ... compromise his beliefs and he was blessed by God for his ... Repeat Step #2 three times to see how many players

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 37 page 6

There is not much to add to the historical perspective of thesethree friends of Daniel’s. They lived during the same time periodas Daniel. They first lived in Judah, were taken to Babylon andwere made officials within King Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom.Throughout their captivity they remained faithful to the faith oftheir fathers. By doing so, they were beacons of light for theIsraelites who were forced to leave the Promise Land. They heldfirm to God’s promise to restore Jerusalem and the nation ofIsrael.

TEACHER’S PRAYER:Dear Lord. As we near the end of the Old Testament Chronological Study, Iam amazed about how much my students (and I) have learned! Not onlyhave they learned many of the wonderful stories found in the Old Testament, they have also learned how You use ordinary men and women to carry outyour plan for your people. Thank you for helping us see how important eachindividual is to you. Thank you for showing us your Word!

“This is what the Lord says, “I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem.” ... I will bring them backto live in Jerusalem; they will be my people, and

I will be faithful and righteous to them as their God.”

Zechariah 8:3, 8

Zechariah lived at the same time as Haggai. He, too, gave thepeople God’s message to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. Hegave much encouragement to the Jews by reminding them theywere not just building a structure, but the Temple had futureimportance for when their Messiah came! As Haggai, he remind-ed them future blessings were contingent upon present obedi-ence.

The book of Zechariah emphasizes God’s future plans for Hispeople. It opens with a directive to the people to repent andreturn to God. Then Zechariah had a series of eight visions. Inthem he saw what would happen when the Lord came at last tosave His people. God wanted to give them hope during their longwait for when “the Lord will come to judge the nations and beking over the whole earth.” (Zechariah 14:9)

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 38 page 4

A long time ago ...

there was a beautiful young Jewish woman named Esther. Shegrew up under the care of Mordecai, her cousin, because she didnot have a father or a mother. Mordecai and his family lived inthe city of Susa in Persia under the rule of King Xerxes. Mordecaiwas a high official in the king’s government.

One day the king gave a banquet for all of the nobles in his king-dom. On the last day of the banquet, he ordered Queen Vashti tocome before him, but she refused. This made him very mad sohe told her she was no longer queen. He then conducted asearch to find the most beautiful girl in the kingdom for his bride.Esther was chosen and went to live in the royal palace. Asinstructed by Mordecai, she never told the king she was a Jew.

Shortly after Esther was made queen, Mordecai overhead two ofthe king’s officers plotting to kill King Xerxes. He told QueenEsther about the plot, who in turn warned the king. The two offi-cers were executed and Mordecai was credited for saving theking’s life. Meanwhile another official in King Xerxes’ govern-ment, Haman, was honored by the king above all of the other offi-cials in his government. The king commanded all of the royal offi-cials to kneel down and honor Haman, but Mordecai refused. This made Haman angry. When he found out Mordecai was aJew, he devised a plan to not only destroy Mordecai, but all of hispeople. He convinced the king that all Jews should be killedbecause they did not obey the king’s laws. So the king decreedit. Mordecai found out about the king’s order, put on sackclothand ashes, and mourned the fate of his people. When Esther

heard what Mordecai was doing, she sent a servant to find outwhat the problem was. He gave the servant a copy of the orderand told him to urge Esther to go into the king’s presence andbeg for mercy for her people. This was a hard thing for Esther todo because anyone entering the king’s inner court without beingsummoned could be put to death unless the king raised his goldscepter to him and spares his life. Esther said she would if theJews would fast for her for three days.

Esther did see the king and, after inviting him and Haman to abanquet two nights in a row, she begged the king to spare her lifeand that of her people, the Jews. The king asked who would dareto order the destruction of her people? When she replied Haman, the king flew into a rage. He ordered Haman to hang for his evildeed.

What we can learn from the story

The book of Esther is an exciting story filled with drama. In it theorphaned girl becomes a queen and saves her people from totaldestruction. Through the wisdom of Mordecai and the beauty ofa young queen, God saved the Jewish had remained in Persiafrom death.

God used seemingly ordinary people to accomplish the impossi-ble. God can use us to do the same. By obedience to His instruc-tions, we can do great things.

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 38 page 7

The story of Esther takes place after the return of the first groupof Jews returned to Judah from Babylon and the return of thesecond group led by Ezra. It take place in a city close to thePersian Gulf rather than the great city of Babylon where themajority of the original captives from Judah were taken.

Historically this story shows how scattered God’s people were inthis new land. It also shows how some of the descendants of theoriginal exiled had risen to positions of responsibility within thecommunity they lived. For example, Mordecai became a highofficial within the providence he lived and was well respectedwithin the king’s court. Of course Esther was an orphan andbecame a queen. These two ordinary people played a key rolein God’s plan to protect His people!

The Book of Esther is considered unique because it does notmention God, yet as the events unfold the presence of God isfelt. From the time Esther went to live with Mordecai to thedecree to their actions to reverse the decree to kill all of theJews, these events led to the unification of God’s people andtheir wholehearted return to worshiping Him.

“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb

for all Israel.”

Malachi 4:4

Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament. It was written fourhundred years before the birth of Jesus.

Malachi lived at the same time as Nehemiah. As in the past, thepeople fell into a false sense of security with their relationshipwith God. They fell into the same sins they had done before theywent into exile in Babylonia. These sins included idolatry, mixedmarriages with pagan worshippers, infidelity and abuse of thepoor. Malachi tried to appeal to the people, but they would not lis-ten. They no longer paid attention to God or His Word. Theresult? God remained silent for four hundred years.

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 39 page 4

A long time ago ...

there were four prophets who were instrumental in the rebuilding

of Jerusalem and preparing the people for Jesus. Their stories

are told in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.

After King Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar and Darius, King Cyrusof Persia became ruler over the providence where God’s peoplelived. At this point in history God’s people were now called Jews, meaning from Judah. (Remember they were previously calledHebrews during the time of Moses, then Israelites when theyarrived in the Promised Land.) King Cyrus allowed anyone whowanted to return to Jerusalem to do so.

The first group of Jews brought gold and silver to pay for therepair of the city of Jerusalem and the Temple. Although theyenthusiastically started to repair the Temple, those who had set-tled in Judah after the Babylonians carried away God’s peopledid not want the Temple rebuilt. They were successful in stop-ping the restoration for sixteen years. But God sent His prophetsHaggai and Zechariah to encourage the Jews and the templewas completed.

Fifty-seven years after the first group of Jews returned to Judah,Ezra lead a second group of Jews back to Jerusalem. Hebecame the spiritual leader of God’s people teaching them thedecrees and laws of Israel. The third and final group of Jews toreturn to Judah was led by Nehemiah who was instrumental inrebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah was a true leaderfor after their city was rebuilt, he led the political and moralrestoration of the Jewish nation.

What we can learn from the story

God used all four of these men to rebuild Jerusalem and HisTemple. Each man had a specific task to perform. Two wereresponsible for the restoration of the actual Temple building. Onewas responsible for educating God’s people in His laws. And thefourth was responsible for the rebuilding of the city as well as theirpolitical government.

Just as each man had a specific job, or purpose,so do all themembers of God’s church today. This is often referred to as Gifts. Some of us are gifted as teachers. Some of us are gifted asgivers. Still others of us are gifted in hospitality. Whatever our giftis,we are to use it to help build or rebuild His church. We are touse our gifts according to His wishes as we support each other inlove.

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 39 page 7

As the stories of Daniel and his three friends have shown us, theJews were not mistreated while in captivity. However, many ofthem felt despair over being taken from their land and diligentlystudied the teachings of Moses and the prophets to understandwhat happened. God’s people began to gather together to studyGod’s Word in synagogues. The result? Renewed hope thatthey would some day return to the Promised Land!

Finally the day arrived when God opened King Cyrus’ heart andhe allowed the Jews to return to Judah. But not all of them went. Those who had made a fresh commitment to God were in thefirst group to make the pilgrimage back to their home land.Others returned in the second and third group. Still othersremained in Babylon because they had become accustomed tothe lifestyle of the good life. However many that did remain gavefinancially to the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem and God’sTemple.

We cannot leave the Old Testament without stressing the impor-tance of the Temple at this time in history. The Temple wasimportant because it was the central place of worship for thenation of Israel. It was the singular unifying place for all the Jewsto gather at three times a year to reaffirm their common faith andcommon heritage as God’s covenant people. Furthermore, itwas here that the promised Messiah would come. (Ezekiel 43:7)

But, alas, God’s people again forgot to keep His command-ments. Thus began the four hundred silent years.
