…and the work of three women.
In the early 1800s, the United States of America
grew in size,
population,
and industry.
People also wanted
AMERICA to grow in GREATNESS.
At this time, the freedoms and rights promised in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution
and the Amendments were not given to all Americans.
Slavery was legal
in the land of the free.
There were people who wanted to ABOLISH, or
END, slavery. They were called abolitionists.
They worked for the Abolitionist Movement..
Women were NOT ALLOWED to
VOTE in the United States.
The rightto voteis called
suffrage.
The
Women’sSuffrageMovementworkedto GIVE women
the right to vote.
In this presentation we will meet three
Americans who worked to
abolish slavery
and forwomen to have the right to vote.

became known as the "Moses of her People.”
She led hundreds of slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad.
Harriet Tubman later became a leader
in the abolitionist movement.
During the Civil War she was a spy for the federal forces in South Carolina as
well as a nurse.
I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was one of two thingsI had a right to,liberty or death;if I could not have one,I would have the other. Harriet Tubman
was a teacher who believed women should have
the same voting rights as men. She was a writer who used words to protest whatwas wrong with America and how it couldbecome better.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton became “the face” of the
Women’s Suffrage Movement.
