Exercise Can Help Reduce Anxiety

Regular exercise can significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety. In a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that, on average, patients who exercised regularly reported a 20-percent reduction in anxiety symptoms compared to those who did not exercise.

“Our findings add to the growing body of evidence that physical activities such as walking or weight lifting may turn out to be the best medicine that physicians can prescribe to help their patients feel less anxious,” said Matthew Herring, a doctoral student in the department of kinesiology, part of the UGA College of Education.

Exercise sessions greater than 30 minutes were better at reducing anxiety than sessions of less than 30 minutes. But surprisingly, programs with a duration of between three and twelve weeks appear to be more effective at reducing anxiety than those lasting more than twelve weeks. The researchers noted that study participants were less likely to stick with the longer exercise programs, which suggests that better participation rates result in greater reductions in anxiety.

Songs Everyone Must OwnMusic is such a powerful force in this world. It keeps things going and allows us

to recall special moments and memories. Who doesn’t love nostalgia? Below is a play list of definitive artists and songs that everyone should own.

My Way (Frank Sinatra): One of the best reflective anthems about embracing the good and the bad.

Landslide (Stevie Nicks): It is amazing how many beautiful songs have come out of bad relationships.

Jailhouse Rock (Elvis Presley): The quintessential Elvis.

Crazy (Patsy Cline): When she first heard this song Patsy Cline said that she couldn’t sing it but it became one of her signature pieces.

God Only Knows (Beach Boys): Paul McCartney called this song the most perfect pop song.

Yesterday (The Beatles): The original subject of this song believe it or not was ham and eggs.

Music can be a powerful teacher and healer – maybe it’s time to dust off some of those old records and relive favorite moments from the past.

Giving the Gift of LifeJanuary is National Blood Donor Month

Blood donors are ordinary people – high school students, factory and office workers, business executives, parents and grandparents, and people from every walk of life. But they share one thing – a generous spirit, a desire to give back to their community and help others. Blood donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern healthcare. Many lifesaving medical treatments and procedures involve blood transfusions and would not be possible without a safe and reliable blood supply.

If you already donate blood, thank you! You are making a lifesaving contribution that benefits accident victims, cancer patients, surgical candidates, children with blood disorders and many others. If you have never donated blood, please consider doing so. Your donations are always in constant demand.

And the Award Goes To… January 25, 1949, holds a significant place in television

history. This day marks the first annual Emmy Awards ceremony, which was hosted by American media icon Walter O’Keefe and debuted in Los Angeles. The Emmys then were quite different than they are now. Awards were given for the best film made for television, most outstanding television personality, most popular program and the station award for outstanding overall achievement. There was also a technical award and a special award given for the design of the Emmy statuette to Louis McManus, making a grand total of six awards. Only Los Angeles-based programs were eligible to receive the awards, and if you wanted to attend to ceremony, tickets cost a mere $5. The Emmys later expanded in the 1950s to include shows produced nationally, not just locally in Los Angeles. Until 1974, there was only one national Emmy Awards program. Then the Daytime Emmy Awards debuted and soon after, separate Emmy ceremonies arose targeting a number of different areas, including sports, and news and documentary. The Daytime Emmys and Primetime Emmys remain the most popular. After so many years of Emmys, you might wonder which television show has won the most. The answer is Saturday Night Live. And who has the most Emmys under his or her belt, you ask? Cloris Leachman.
