WELCOME TO 2017

The team at Explosive Dance & Theatre Co. are

thrilled to be offering another year of dance

adventures to the local community and we extend

a warm welcome to all new and returning families.

Established in 1998 by Francine Brereton, Explosive

Dance & Theatre Co has been home to many

young performers over the years and continues to

evolve to allow dancers of all ages and abilities to

get involved in dance and performance.

In 2017 you will see all your favourite classes

featured on our timetable, with the introduction of

some new teaching staff and genres. In Term 1 we

will be launching our ‘SUPER SENSE’ dance class

aimed at those with learning sensitivities and come

term 2 we will be extending our Entertainment

division to include an agency aspect ‘Explosive

Entertainment & Artist Management’ to further

facilitate performance opportunities to our

dancers, models and actors.

We have also adjusted the format of some of

specialty classes (i.e. Modelling to a

workshop/short course style to better utilise class

time and allow more people to take part in this fun

class), and for the adults who are a little shy to take

on our concert classes we are planning in the

background some super fun mini terms ready to

get you on the dance floor! (To be announced

soon)

Finally as always,

Explosive will continue its strong community

engagement focus kicking off once again by

supporting programs with MADI Works Inc, The City

of Armadale & The City of Gosnells

Here we go 2017,

Let us make this the most enjoyable one yet!

ABOUT EXPLOSIVE – A PERSONAL

INTRODUCTION

Allow us to introduce you to Explosive

Dance & Theatre Co on a more personal

level and if we seem like a good fit,

welcome to our world.

Explosive Dance & Theatre Co is led by a

Mother and Daughter team, and

supported by a close knit group of

teachers. We approach things like a family,

taking great care of one another, our

students and their families and we are real.

We open our doors to all ages, shapes and

abilities believing we should all have the

opportunity to enjoy that magic feeling

dance, movement and music brings.

Competitions and Exams?, Whilst we

support and value traditional dance

comps and technical dance exams our

trophy wall is not our focus. We focus on

driving our performers to be their best from

finding it within, and by allowing them to

explore their own creativity, individuality

and artistry. But are we professional you

ask? Absolutely

For those who want to pursue dance

further than just a good feeling we are well

experienced in preparing students for entry

into high school specialist programs, tertiary

dance programs and professional careers.

Our teachers all currently perform

professionally allowing them to pass on

industry knowledge and we provide regular

professional dance opportunities to our

senior dancers.

Finally we also offer an extended dance

community by our special programs and

partnerships with The City of Armadale,

local schools and organisations where we

utilise dance as a medium to connect and

engage with a diverse range of people to

achieve diverse objectives. Dance is our

world and our light and we invite you all to

join us

MEET 2017 TEACHING TEAM

Francine Brereton (Co – Director)

Originally trained as a competitive gymnast Francine Brereton (Nee Ray) has also studied

theatre, singing and dance. In 1993 she opened Huff & Puff Kids Fitness which then

expanded into Jazz Attack Dance School. In 1998 a change in location and teaching format

brought about the birth of Explosive Dance & Theatre Co. For the past 18 years Explosive

Dance & Theatre Co. has kept a strong focus on family and community based programs

whilst at the same time developing and encouraging students who have gone on to make

performing arts their career. “What I have cherished most over the years, is seeing the self-

confidence and strong team work ethic develop in each person as they are encouraged to

remain individual in themselves whilst fully committed to respecting each other and working

as a team". Explosive Dance & Theatre Co. works to create a strong bond between its family

of members who support each other and encourage hard work, high energy and spirited

performances both in class time and on stage. A great love for the written word has also

seen a myriad of poetry, song lyrics, plays and educational based programs be produced by

the highly motivated and diversely creative Francine Brereton, with the two most notable

being 'Coopers Couch' co-written with Stephen Wilson (2004) which was originally written

and produced as a stage play with the stage performance screened on Television and

'Mega MADI Super Star' (2006) which includes original ‘Hip Hop’ kids song ‘Got a Message’

and has evolved into programs delivered at local schools supported by The City of Armadale

- madiworks.com.au

Tamara Artemis (Co-Director)

After a childhood of dance Tamara was accepted into John Curtin College of the Arts

Specialist Dance Program. For years 11 and 12 Tamara was also accepted into the Specialist

Ballet program which she completed con-currently with Specialist Dance and TEE studies.

During this time Tamara was also fortunate to work with notable choreographers and

perform at high profile venues and events in Perth as a member of Steps Youth Dance

Company and Explosive Dance & Theatre Co. In 2005 Tamara moved to Sydney to complete

the Full Time Certificate IV Performing Arts program at Brent Street Studios which exposed her

to the new experiences in dancing, acting, modelling and singing. Since returning to Perth,

Tamara has worked as a Dance Specialist in High Schools, secured professional work as a

singer, dancer and actor on stage and screen and dedicated her energy to being a

resident performer, choreographer and teacher at Explosive Dance & Theatre Co.

Most recently Tamara has managed and choreographed for ‘Explosive Entertainment Perth’

the professional entertainment division of Explosive Dance & Theatre Co and facilitated

community engagement programs for The City of Armadale and Therapy Focus. Tamara has

a double major Bachelor Degree in Psychology and Criminology and currently sits on the

board for MADI Works Inc. Believing that teachers should never stop learning you will also

catch Tamara as a student around the studio (possibly with her two young boys in tow).

Some of Tamara’s performance credits include: West Coast Eagles Cheerleader, Steps Youth

Dance Company (2001 – 2006), Telethon, Rogue Traders music video ‘Way to Go’, Global

Good Foundation Ball performed live with Paulini, TVC Tetris Scratch n Win, AusDANCE Dance

Live, AUDI Art Ball, Dancer and Backing vocalist for ‘Faux Pink’- Perth & Adelaide and an ever

growing list of corporate and community performances at events in Sydney and Perth.

Nicole Langford (Jazz/Contemporary/Musical Theatre)

Nicole is an absolute asset to Explosive Dance & Theatre Co with her friendly and serene

nature yet fierce choreography and teaching skills.

A dancer with Explosive as a little one Nicole returned to us in 2016 initially as a relief teacher

but we loved her so much we won’t let her go! Nicole specialises in Jazz, Contemporary and

Musical Theatre and having completed her Certificate Two in Dance (Jazz and

Contemporary) in 2015 she has plenty of fresh ideas and material to share with our dancers.

Nicole is also studying at University in order to work in secondary education.

Elvira Franich (Tap & Ballet)

Elvira began dancing at the age of three, attending local dance studios which allowed for

her to compete in a number of competitions and exams. There Elvira trained extensively in

classical ballet, jazz, tap, acrobatics, musical theatre, hip hop, lyrical and contemporary.

Since then she has completed all of her examinations in the syllabuses of; The Royal

Academy of Dance, Commonwealth Society of Teachers of Dancing, Glen Wood Tap and

Jason Winters. Elvira has received achievements in a number of areas within the arts

including the Cartoon Network Hero Award for excellence in the arts, acceptance into the

National Institute of Performing Arts Australia – National Youth Dance Theatre Australia and a

scholarship for dance in the Gifted and Talented Program of Dance at John Curtin Collage

of the Performing Arts. Over the past few years Elvira has participated in Royal Academy of

Dance Master classes and has had West Australian Ballet training with principle dances of

the company. Over the past few years Elvira has travelled to Sydney, NSW to perform as well

as compete in advanced placement competitions in the styles of jazz, street jazz, hip hop,

lyrical, tap, house, musical theatre, salsa and latin. She has been lucky enough to dance

alongside choreographers such as Barry Youngblood, Gina Starbuck, Gregg Russell, Alison

Faulk, Gustavo Vargas, Adam Parson, Ryan Lohoff, Jason Winters and Glenn Wood. Elvira

has done a number of performances which started at shopping centres as a child and has

developed to performance at events such as Telethon and corporate shows at places such

as Crown Casino Perth, Perth Arena, Patterson Stadium and NIB stadium.

Elvira is also qualified in Module One Acrobatics Arts Syllabus and has been completing

further dance teaching and management qualifications.

Brendan Burns (Breakdance)

Brendan joined the Explosive team in 2016 and has quickly become a favourite around the

studio. With over 15 years teaching experience Brendan is able to deliver his breakdancing

classes with expertise and a calm kindness.

Brendan’s ability to adapt to the needs of all students and embrace diversity in his amongst

his groups of bboys and bgirls means your dancers will get the best tuition in the genre.

Jaime Lim (Hip Hop/Urban)

In 2017 we welcome Jaime Lim to the team. We met Jaime after her Hip Hop crew came to

use our space for rehearsals and since then we have come to witness a great creative at

work and we are thrilled to see what she will bring to the development of Hip Hop within our

studio.

Jaime describes her class style as ‘Urban Open’ which is all about exploring various styles of

'street' dance. Not only does it bring out expressive movement like all other dances alike, but

it also gives dancers a chance to let loose and add their own flavour to their dances. Urban

Open can offer the basics of street dance such as; housing, waacking, reggaeton, slow jam

and urban miscellaneous. Jaime is also a talented photographer, vocalist and pianist and is

sure to bring a great fresh dynamic to the studio.

ALL TEACHERS AT EXPLOSIVE DANCE HOLD A WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK

WHAT’S ON OFFER?

CLASS GENRES

‘Dance & Ballet’ (2- 3 Years & 4 – 5 Years) – Previously Twinkle Tots & Tiny Tots

Our structured Dance & Ballet classes offer a great foundation of dance education in jazz and ballet

technique and include activities to develop their motor skills, explore music and rhythm and voice and

open up their creative minds with a whole lot of fun and colour.

‘Ballet’

The essential foundation to all dance genres. Ballet teaches musicality, grace and technique and its

disciplined practice develops bodily strength and flexibility. Whilst we do not offer Ballet exams our Ballet

classes are structured around the RAD Ballet syllabus

‘Tap’

Tap is an exciting and fun genre of dance (and it is a great workout too!). From the classic era of Fred

Astaire to the modern tap styles of the ‘Tap Dogs’ tap develops co-ordination and musicality and is a highly

recommended style for dancers interested in pursuing Musical Theatre. Our Tap teacher Elvira also ensures

that dancers do not just learn to mimic tap moves, but that they gain a full understanding of terminology

and technique

‘Acrobatics’

Our acrobatics style is based on the tumbling techniques of Artistic Gymnastics, however we also utilise the

training methods of the Acrobatic Arts Syllabus. Our classes include tumbling skills, strength and conditioning

and group balances and tricks

‘Breakdance’

Our resident BBoy Brendan Burns gets all our Break dancers moving and grooving in this fun and challenging

class. Breakdance or breaking has been around for decades but its popularity has grown in recent times

along with many dance styles that fall under the ‘Hip Hop’ genre featured commercially in music videos

and dance based movies. This style is athletic and expressive and allows each dancer to explore their own

style of movement in freestyle battles. Brendan also ensures the dancers understand the history, culture and

etiquette of breakdance.

‘Jazz & Commercial Jazz’

Our younger dancers will focus on traditional jazz technique as well as theatrical styles whilst our senior

dancers will also learn choreography in ‘commercial jazz’ which fuse traditional jazz with a range of dance

influences including lyrical, contemporary and hip hop movement. Our senior classes have been

lengthened this year to allow for more time on dance conditioning and technique.

‘Hip Hop’

Hip Hop is a broad term for many styles of dance popular amongst Hip Hop culture – At Explosive Dance our

style lends towards street/urban styles and we adjust the movement and music to ensure it remains age

appropriate. This style is expressive and performed with lots of attitude!

‘Musical Theatre’

Love to sing? Love to Dance? Love to Act? – Musical Theatre is for you! Our classes incorporate vocal

training for singing and spoken dialogue, scripted and improvised acting exercises, theatrical dance styles

and history of Musicals. This genre of performance is great for those who are keen to explore all aspects of

performance and our Musical Theatre items are always a favourite at our end of year show!

‘Contemporary’

Contemporary dance is a highly expressive and physical style of dance which often involves a level of story-

telling within the movement. Whilst contemporary has a strong base in Ballet and physical theatre, creativity

in the shapes and patterns within this style of dance is unlimited and unrestricted. Contemporary classes

include partner work, movement on the floor and creative/improvised movement tasks (which may allow

for dancers to be involved in the choreographic process of performance pieces)

‘Cheerleading’

Cheerleading is a fun yet challenging class which involves acrobatics, dance, pom and stunts. At Explosive

dance we offer an introductory level of recreational cheerleading with an open level team – all delivered

with plenty of cheer spirit!

‘TYGA®’ & ‘BURN®’ – By The Jungle Body®

Whether you love to dance or cannot dance at all the highly addictive fitness programs by The Jungle Body

are for you! So dancers, dance Mums (or Dad’s) grab your sweat towel and water bottle and get moving

with Tamara and Laura!

TYGA® is the world's first Hip Hop, Dancehall, Ragga & Afro based FITNESS Workout that combines easy-to-

do dance moves with fitness concepts to improve your endurance & sculpt your body. Tyga® uses the

latest, greatest and best RnB, Hip Hop, Rap, Dancehall, Afro & Ragga music from around the world. Don't

be afraid; Tyga is for men and women of all ages and requires no dance or fitness experience because the

steps are easy to follow. Due to some of the lyrics in the music, this program requires parental permission for

under 18s

BURN® is a one of a kind Choreographed Dumbbell Sculpt Workout. BURN! Takes 1kg – 2kg Dumbells in

each hand & fuses this with movements that are dance inspired which will shape, sculpt & improve your

muscle tone in your Upper Body & Core. Focusing on functional & high repetition movements, you'll burn fat,

gain strength and quickly produce lean body muscle conditioning. Rather than doing weights in a boring &

tedious environment - BURN spices up traditional moves with a subtle addition of dance flavour.

SUPER SENSE |Dance classes for performers with learning sensitivities

In 2017 we are launching our Super Sense class, a dance class tailored to the needs of performers who may

need to receive instruction in a more sensitive way to get the most out of their class, whether that be

adjustment to music volume, room temperature, personal space in the studio or by focusing on different

approaches to delivering information (texture, colour, creative activities etc).

This concept has evolved from the many years of working with a large range of dancers both with and

without other special needs requirements who seem to need an alternative to the standard dance class.

Our Super Sense class will be officially launched in the coming weeks with a whole lot more information and

clarity available, but for now consider this a first round introduction!

The Super Sense dancers will part take in our concert and all events as per our usual concert classes.

All weekly classes (aside from group fitness) work towards our end of year concert and participants are

enrolled for the Term (I.e. not intended for casual attendance).

Our end of year production is a high quality whole company event whereby every student has the

opportunity to showcase what they have worked hard on over the year. For the past two years our end of

year concert has been held at All Saints College, Centre for Performing Arts which is a beautiful theatre with

exceptional facilities.

As we take great pride in our show and ensuring our dancers feel comfortable with what they are to

perform and the backstage process we do hold extra compulsory rehearsals in the lead up to the concert

but we try and keep these as stress free as possible.

Theatre bookings for 2017 are still TBC (we will notify all dancers as soon as possible with exact dates)

To get the best out of your classes please always arrive on time to ensure you do not miss out on warm up

and be dressed appropriately for the genre of your class (i.e. Tap class ensure you have your Tap shoes! -

Please refer to uniform recommendations in the info pack as a guide on best practice)

If you are waiting in the foyer during class time please keep conversations quiet as voices travel easily into

the studios which can be very distracting for dancers and teachers

these mediums as a great way to share class updates and information and to offer insight into our studio
