This year to help everyone get a little bitbetter acquainted with the members of theguild, we’ll spotlight a different membereach month.

SANDY SHOWNMEMBERSHIP

Sandy Shown is in charge of tak-ing attendance and record keeping.Sandy is a third and fourth genera-tion Native Texan. She joined theGuild in June of 2007, when shewas brought in by Susan Hamilton.

She finds curves the most diffi-cult to piece.

“I have learned the value of pay-ing someone with a longarm quilterto do the work instead of rolling itthrough my machine, or trying tomake time to quit it by hand when ameander is all I need,” she says.

Her favorite colors are blues, yel-lows and reds . Her least favoritecolors are Chocolate brown and, depending on the combination,

some greens.

“I really liked the Round Robinquilt project we did last year,” shesays. “It was fun and it made metry new things with color and piec-ing.”

She has bags with fabric selec-tions stashed in groups for futureprojects, as well as boxes of FQ’sand yardage to play with.

“So much fabric so little time.”

When Lorene Gruber submitted Andrew's Starsto the QUILTMAKER design contest, she told us of a

clever technique for making a three-triangle unit (tradi-tionally known as Flying Geese) that she had learned fromKen and Shirley Wengler in Newberry, Florida. We contactedher teachers, and they were delighted to share with us andour readers their speedy method for constructing this famil-iar pattern. So we all thank you, Shirley and Ken!

These directions will make the 2" x 4" Flying Geese unitsneeded for the quilt Andrew's Stars. Follow along to understandthe procedure. Then if you need units of different dimen-sions, see the chart below to make your own custom size.

0 Cut 4 squares 2W x 2%" from the fabric that will bethe smaller background triangles.

Cut one square 5\V x 5W from the fabric that will becomethe "geese" triangle (the large one in the center of the unit).

© With right sides together, place small squares at oppo-site corners of the large square, align edges, and pin in place.(The corners of the small squares will overlap in the center.)

© Draw a straight line from corner to corner through thesmall squares.

O Stitch an accurate Vi"away from the line along bothsides.

© Cut the squares in halfalong the drawn line.

On eachhalf, press thesmall triangles andthe seam allow-ances away fromthe large triangle.

Q Position another smallsquare at the corner of one largetriangle, pin in place, and draw adiagonal line from corner tocorner.

(•) Again sew a line of stitchesVA" away from the line along bothsides. Repeat for the secondlarge triangle.

© Cut apart on thedrawn line to create twoFlying Geese units. Pressthe small triangles andseam allowances awayfrom the larger triangles.

Repeat to make twomore Flyino Geese units.

One large and four smallsquares make a row of fourFlying Geese. When joiningthe long sides of the units, take care not to catch thefinished point of the largetriangle inside the seam.Trim off the points of theseam allowances along both edges so no dark fabric willshow through once they are joined to other patches.

If you need a unit of a different size, the formula for cut-ting the squares is an easy one. Measure the finished sizeof the large triangle patch for both needed dimensions.

To determine the cutsize of the small triangles, measure the finishedheight of the large trianglepatch and add %".

To determine the cutsize of the large squares, measure the finished baseof the large triangle patchand add 1Vi".

Height + %" = L

Base + 11/4" =

Lastly, I found this marvelous chart and thought I would share it with all of you. This issomething you should print off and keep as it is fabulous for all those mattress meas-urements that we need all the time to figure how much fabric we should buy for whatsize pattern we should use. I sure hope you find this helpful.
