2 primary Stress Pathways —
• ‘Acute’ Stress Responses
• ‘Chronic’ Stress Responses
Acute / Immediate danger with…
Chronic Stress ~
This relates to what we’re doing with N.E.T .
Many stressful events of today
can subconsciously remind us of
unresolved past traumatic events
And this can lead to ongoing
chronic Stress Patterns that can
manifest as mind & body symptoms
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
NET helps us find & eliminate
Conditioned Emotional Responses
& stops these recurring patterns
N.E.T RESEARCH
IN A RECENTLY PUBLISHED STUDY, BRAIN REGIONS INVOLVED WITH TRAUMATIC MEMORIES AND DISTRESS (SUCH AS THE BRAINSTEM, INSULA, ANTERIOR CINGULATE GYRUS, AND PARA HIPPOCAMPUS) WERE IDENTIFIED TO HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED ACTIVITY AFTER THE NET INTERVENTION. THE STUDY ALSO FOUND THAT A BRIEF THERAPEUTIC COURSE (3 TO 5 VISITS) OF THE N.E.T INTERVENTION REDUCED REACTIVITY IN THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM, WITH PARTICIPANTS REPORTING THEY HAD DIMINISHED DISTRESS, IMPROVED EMOTIONAL SELF-REGULATION, AND AN OVERALL IMPROVEMENT IN THE QUALITY OF THEIR LIFE.

SOME BACKGROUND INFO ON
THE 8 DYNAMICS OF NET
1. EMOTIONS ARE PHYSIOLOGICALLY BASED
WHILE EMOTIONS USED TO BE THOUGHT OF AS ONLY RESIDING IN THE BRAIN, IT IS NOW KNOWN THAT THE MOLECULAR BASIS OF EMOTIONS
INVOLVE THE PHYSIOLOGY OF 'INFORMATION SUBSTANCES', WHICH ARE COMPRISED OF NEUROPEPTIDES, HORMONES, AND OTHER SPECIALIZED
INFORMATION MOLECULES THAT PERMEATE THE ENTIRE BODY —INCLUDING OUR DNA. THIS DYNAMIC HAS BEEN WELL DESCRIBED AND
VALIDATED BY CANDACE PERT, PHD, ET. AL. VISIT HTTP://CANDACEPERT.COM/LIBRARY/ FOR MORE WORKS BY DR. PERT.

EVERY EMOTIONAL EVENT IS A
PHYSIOLOGIC EVENT, AND MOST
PHYSIOLOGIC EVENTS ARE AN
EMOTIONAL EVENT.
Lemon memory, songs make us cry, neural connection stats,. We as SLPs can go one further-
EVERY SPEECH EVENT IS AN EMOTIONAL EVENT, AND MOST
EMOTIONAL EVENTS BECOME A SPEECH/ COMMUNICATION
EVENT.
Tone of voice, affect, intonation contours all give meaning to expression and can change meaning and the resultant emotional response to an utterance.
?
Yeah, OUCH!
2. PAVLOVIAN PRINCIPLES (CONDITIONED RESPONSE)
While most think in terms of Pavlovian Responses as applying to animals, humans can also be conditioned — sometimes by a one-time event (this is termed a one-time trial). While conditioning is normal under most situations, so is the physiological counterpart (the fading or elimination of a conditioned response), which is called ‘extinction’. Simply put, sometimes extinction does not take place, and we utilize NET to allow the body to complete this normal process. This dynamic has been scientifically validated perhaps more than any other — starting, of course, with Pavlov, et. al.
☺
3. EMOTIONAL CORRELATIONSUsing the Law of Five Elements from Chinese Medicine, )which has been clinically validated for more than 1,500 years), we know that specific emotions are linked to specific meridians. The Pulse meridian points have been named after the Elements of Fire, Wood, Water, Metal and Earth, and each is associated with various types of emotional/ stress responses.
For example:•Fire element can be associated with abandoned, vulnerable
•Wood element can be associated with anger, frustration, etc.
•Water element can be associated with fear, dread
•Metal element can be associated with grief, sadness, yearning
•Earth element can be associated with worry, hopelessness, etc.….
USING YOUR MEMORY OF A LEMON,
Close your eyes and visualize a lemon…
It’s shape,
It’s bright, shiny yellow, bumpy peel.
Think about cutting into it & seeing the juice squirting out,
The seeds in the flesh…
Now, take a
BIG bite!
Is your mouth watering?
If you’re like most people, it is!
What you’re experiencing is your body’s natural physiological response to the
memory of a lemon.
Did you cringe?
Our body’s ‘stress response’ works in a similar way when triggered
with unresolved memories.
3. REPETITION COMPULSION
• Repetition Compulsion
• Sigmund Freud's concept of 'repetition compulsion' notes that once we have been emotionally traumatized (and conditioned), we may unconsciously seek to repeat a similar trauma in the future. Essentially, what has traumatized an individual earlier in life, if unresolved, will often revisit them again in similar future circumstances.

REPETITION COMPULSION, CONTINUED-
Example:• A young girl with an alcoholic father might get
beatings instead of the love she needs from him. She learns the behaviors that keep her safe. But as an adult, these behaviors no longer serve her.
• Later in life she is attracted to men who trigger the possible resolution of this unmet need for love. The repetition-compulsion is to try and get the love from the desired object (father), and later from an object representation (teacher, boyfriend, husband or loser at the bar.)
• Object representations are chosen based on resemblance to the original desired object, which includes the alcoholism and propensity to beat, so she continually ends up with alcoholic men that abuse her, even if it takes years for that behavior to manifest.

In NET all memory events are
considered to be Emotional Reality
as they may or may not correspond
with actual or historical reality

Instead, it works much like an
involuntary reflex.
Example: It’s normal to tap the knee & have an
involuntary Patellar Reflex response.
Semantic response can be described as the psychological and physiological reaction to words and language and other symbols in relation to their meanings. For example, the physiology of the body can be reactive not only to the sight of a spider, but also to the word 'spider' or a picture of a spider.
This dynamic has been validated by Monti, et. al., with non-congruent words testing as a physiologically weakened muscle response.
Visit: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10407911/ for Monti's paper, 'Muscle Test Comparisons of Congruent and Incongruent Self-referential Statements'.
(Part I & Part II)
IMPLICATIONS FOR SLPS AND THEIR PATIENTS:
• Dysfluency
• Dysphagia
• Spasmodic dysphonia
• Other voice disorders
• Pragmatic/interactional disorders
• Dysarthrias
• Other motor speech disorders
RESEARCH IS NEEDED NOW!

A DEMONSTRATION OF N.E.T.
