Fifth Sunday of Lent Mar. 29, 2020

Dear friends in Christ,

I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well and keeping safe at the present time. As you are aware, in an effort to break the chain of viral transmission of SARS-CoV-2 which causes the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Archbishop took the decision to suspend the celebration of public Masses and to dispense the faithful from the obligation to participate in Sunday Mass. Saint Joseph Church remains open daily (Mon.-Fri., 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Sat., 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sun., 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) for private pray-er and adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and Confessions are heard at the regularly scheduled times. Private Mass is being livestreamed from the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis at http://cathedralstl.org/live/ (Sunday at 10 a.m. and Monday-Saturday at 8 a.m.).

Last week I wrote about the importance of spiritual communion given that we are not able to come to-gether as a community of faith at Mass. Jesus tells us that our prayers are efficacious, that is to say, they truly work. He hears every one of our prayers and answers them according to His will (cf., e.g., John 14:13-14). By our private prayer we are united with one another in the Body of Christ which is the Church. For this reason we know that we are not alone but are with each other in spirit. I cannot stress enough the importance of private prayer for all who are suffering at the present time and for an end to the pan-demic. The following is a prayer of spiritual communion which our Holy Father Pope Francis has recom-mended at the present time:

“My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”

One may wonder if the temporary suspension of public Masses has ever occurred in the history of the Church. In fact, it has and even here in this Archdiocese. In 1918, Archbishop John Glennon took the same kind of decision because of the Spanish flu pandemic. A result was that his efforts and those of the whole area were effective in greatly reducing the number of persons affected by the disease. You can read about his decision in the following article: “The 1918 Influenza in Missouri: Centennial Remembrance of the Cri-sis” by David S. McKinsey, M.D., Joel P. McKinsey, M.D., and Maithe Enriquez, Ph.D. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6140242/).

Please be assured of my prayers and those of Father Mike Donald for you and your loved ones.

In Christ,

Father Bené

Ways to Help With many people having their jobs and hours cut, there will be more people in need. If you are look-ing for some way to help, here are a few options.

St. Vincent de Paul Our own Food Pantry is looking bare. If you can make it to the store or order online, consider picking up a few extras to share with those in need. Just drop it off at either of the entrances to the church.

St. Patrick Center The St. Patrick Center continues to help those who are homeless or at risk. You can donate online or find a list of grocery items they need on their website: stpatrickcenter.org/donate

Nurses for Newborns Traditionally in April, St. Joseph's SVDP conference collects items to do-nate at Nurses for Newborns. NFN supports new Mothers and the chal-lenges of a brand new life to care for. Please assist us by bringing new-born diapers, baby wipes and formula.

Prayer from Pope Francis to Our Lady, Health of the Sick O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of us who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; LORD, hear my voice!
