Objective of this Symposium and Exhibition To explore traditional building techniques and materials to improve and innovate traditional crafts, construction materials and fabrication processes. From the Aarhus Experiments with Robotic Thatching we can learn how to use traditional tools and methods as catalyst for innovation in building and architecture.
Enrollment Symposium
Enrollment for the Symposium on January 26th via Jannie Vos ([email protected]). Please indicate how many people will enroll, at what time you expect to check in and if you want to join us for buffet. Enrollment is free of charge.
About the venue Ter Apel Monastery was build between 1465 and 1561, following a medieval plan, including a convent building, a gatehouse, water mills, a parchment facility, a bakery, a brewery, and a guesthouse. Storms, fire, and high maintenance costs caused major problems in the centuries thereafter. In the last century the remaining buildings were carefully preserved and restored. Since 1992 Ter Apel Monastery is listed on UNESCO’s Top 100 of immovable properties in the Netherlands. In 2000, the construction of a new west wing was begun, designed by Danish architect Johannes Exner; in September 2001 the work was completed. Today Ter Apel Monastery is a place of inspiration, enlightenment and hospitality.
Assignment
“Our goal is to develop methods and tools to transform the traditional craft of thatching into a computer based fabrication process. We aim to explore the potential of the historic building techniques of thatching, which has been existing in many different cultures and which primarily has been passed from generation to generation. It is our intention to transfer those techniques into a computer driven environment with the special focus on digitally fabricating a roof or wall structure. This new structure will be illustrating and discussing the potentials of using history as a catalyst to develop architecture of a performative and engaging character.” - Assignment paper for Studio Digital Transformation F16 by Jan Buthke
Participants Invited are architects and experts in innovation in architecture and build environment.
