Jesus said, "This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This com-mand I have received from my Father." John 10:18
A couple of weeks ago I had an email exchange with a golfing buddy of mine, who in full disclosure, is not Catholic. He had questions about the Gospel of St. John (our Patron Saint). Specifically he wanted to know about John 8:59 where the scripture tells us Jesus says "Before Abraham came to be, I AM." Since that is the name reserved for God alone the Jews who were interrogating him picked up stones to kill him for equating himself with God but he "hid from the sight and went out of the Temple area." Something similar occurs in Luke's gospel when they wanted to throw Jesus off the edge of the cliff on which the town was built, but he simply "passed through the midst of them." The question was, did Jesus really disappear from their sight or did he use a some-thing like a Jedi mind trick on them? What was really going on? Well, it was no Jedi mind trick and Jesus did not use The Force. He IS The Force. Not some im-personal energy that binds all things together with a light and a dark side, but the One through whom all things were made and who holds all things in being. The miracle in question is explained in today's gospel some of which is cited above. "No one takes [my life] from me. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again." You see, by his power as God Jesus is absolutely untouchable unless he permits it. Their fury and ire were impotent in the face of his glory and since he deemed it was not yet time to die for our sins they were powerless to harm him. He prevents them from seeing him and simply walks away. It's important for us not to chase Jesus out of our lives. Certainly nobody reading this wants to throw rocks at Jesus but when we sin, particularly mortally, we drive him from us. Mortal Sin destroys God's grace in us and separates us from his mys-tical body, which is the Church. Only the Sacrament of Reconciliation can restore us to friendship with him, a friendship he dearly desires because he loves us more than we can possibly imagine.

Jesús dijo: "Es por eso que el Padre me ama, porque doy la vida para volver a tomarla. Nadie me la quita, pero la pongo por mi cuenta. Tengo poder para dejarla, y poder para retomarlo. Este mandamiento lo he recibido de mi Padre ". Juan 10:18 Hace un par de semanas tuve un intercambio de correo electrónico con un colega mío golfista, quien, en plena revelación, no es católico. Él tenía preguntas sobre el Evangelio de San Juan (nuestro Santo Patrón). Específicamente, quiso saber acerca de Juan 8:59 donde las escrituras nos dicen que Jesús dice "Antes que Abraham viniera a ser, YO SOY". Como ese es el nombre reservado solo para Dios, los judíos que lo interrogaban recogieron piedras para matarlo por compararse con Dios, pero Él "se ocultó de la vista y salió del área del Templo". Algo similar ocurre en el evangelio de Lucas cuando querían arrojar a Jesús al borde del barranco sobre el que se construyó la ciudad, pero Él simplemente "pasó por en medio de ellos". La pregunta era, ¿desapareció realmente Jesús de su vista o usó algo así como un truco mental Jedi sobre ellos? ¿Qué estaba pasando realmente? Bueno, no fue un truco mental Jedi y Jesús no usó La Fuerza. Él ES LA FUERZA. No es una energía impersonal que une todas las cosas con un lado claro y uno oscuro, sino Él es Uno a través del cual todas las cosas fueron hechas y que mantiene todas las cosas en el ser. El milagro en cuestión se explica en el evangelio de hoy, parte del cual se cita arriba. "Nadie me quita [mi vida]. Tengo el poder para dejarla, y el poder para retomarla". Ustedes pueden ver, por su poder como Dios, Jesús es absolutamente intocable a menos que Él lo permita. Su furia e ira eran impotentes frente a su gloria y como Él consideraba que aún no era el momento de morir por nuestros pecados, no podían hacerle daño. Él les impide verlo y simplemente se aleja. Es importante para nosotros no sacar a Jesús de nuestras vidas. Ciertamente, nadie que lee esto quiere arrojar piedras a Jesús, pero cuando pecamos, particularmente mortalmente, lo alejamos de nosotros. El pecado mortal destruye la gracia de Dios en nosotros y nos separa de su cuerpo místico, que es la Iglesia. Solo el Sacramento de la Reconciliación puede devolvernos la amistad con Él, una amistad que Él desea mucho porque nos ama más de lo que podemos imaginar.
