Holy Baptism LSB P268-271

P In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen P Dearly beloved, Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” In the last chapter of Mark our Lord promises, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” And the apostle Peter has written, “Baptism now saves you.”

The Word of God also teaches us that we are all conceived and born sinful and are under the power of the devil until Christ claims us as His own. We would be lost forever unless delivered from sin, death, and everlasting condemnation. But the Father of all mercy and grace has sent His Son Jesus Christ, who atoned for the sin of the whole world, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

The pastor addresses each candidate. P: How are you named? R: Quinn Rose Norris The pastor makes the sign of the holy cross upon the forehead and heart of each candidate while saying: P: Quinn, receive the sign of the holy cross both upon + your forehead and upon your + heart to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified. P: Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, according to Your strict judgment You condemned the unbelieving world through the flood, yet according to Your great mercy You preserved believing Noah and his family, eight souls in all. You drowned hard-hearted Pharaoh and all his host in the Red Sea, yet led Your people Israel through the water on dry ground, foreshadowing this washing of Your Holy Baptism. Through the Baptism in the Jordan of Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, You sanctified and instituted all waters to be a blessed flood and a lavish washing away of sin.

We pray that You would behold Quinn according to Your boundless mercy and bless her with true faith by the Holy Spirit, that through this saving flood that all sin in her, which has been inherited from Adam and which she herself has committed since, would be drowned and die. Grant that she be kept safe and secure in the holy ark of the Christian Church, being separated from the multitude of unbelievers and serving Your name at all times with a fervent spirit and a joyful hope, so that, with all believers in Your promise, he would be declared worthy of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen If the sponsors were previously enrolled, the service continues below with the Holy Gospel. P: From ancient times the Church has observed the custom of appointing sponsors for baptismal candidates and catechumens. In the Evangelical Lutheran Church sponsors are to confess the faith expressed in the Apostles’ Creed and taught in the Small Catechism. They are, whenever possible, to witness the Baptism of those they sponsor. They are to pray for them, support them in their ongoing instruction and nurture in the Christian faith, and encourage them toward the faithful reception of the Lord’s Supper. They are at all times to be examples to them of the holy life of faith in Christ and love for the neighbor.

The pastor addresses the sponsors. P: Is it your intention to serve Quinn as sponsors in the Christian faith? R: Yes, with the help of God P: God enable you both to will and to do this faithful and loving work and with His grace fulfill what we are unable to do. C: Amen

P: Hear the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. They brought young children to [Jesus] that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” And He took them up in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The pastor places his hands on the head of the candidate, and the congregation joins in praying. C: Our Father who art in Heaven

hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. P: The Lord preserve your coming in and your going out from this time forth and even + forevermore. C: Amen Sitting

The pastor addresses the candidate and asks the following questions: P: Quinn, do you renounce the devil? R: Yes, I renounce him. P: Do you renounce all his works? R: Yes, I renounce them. P: Do you renounce all his ways? R: Yes, I renounce them. P: Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth? R: Yes, I believe. P: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He will come to judge the living and the dead? R: Yes, I believe.

Page 4: Immanuel · And He took them up in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The pastor places his hands on the head

P: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting? R: Yes, I believe. P: Quinn, do you desire to be baptized? R: Yes, I do.

The pastor pours water three times on the head of each candidate while saying: P: Quinn, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen The pastor places his hands on the head of the newly baptized while saying: P: The almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with His grace to life + everlasting. C: Amen The pastor may light a baptismal candle from the paschal candle and give it to the newly baptized while saying: P: Receive this burning light to show that you have received Christ who is the Light of the world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming, that you may meet Him with joy and enter with Him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which shall have no end. The newly baptized may be welcomed with the following: P: In Holy Baptism God the Father has made you a member of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir with us of all the treasures of heaven in the one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We receive you in Jesus’ name as our sister in Christ, that together we might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us out of the darkness into His marvelous light. C: Amen. We welcome you in the name of the Lord. Standing P: Let us pray. Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise You that You graciously preserve and enlarge Your family and have granted Quinn the new birth in Holy Baptism and made her a member of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir of Your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore You that, as she has now become Your child, You would keep her in her baptismal grace, that according to Your good pleasure she may faithfully grow to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of Your holy name and finally, with all Your saints, obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C: Amen P: Peace + be with you. C: Amen All return to their places.

Confession and Absolution

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.

Invocation P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from

all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.

Confession of Sins

P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against

You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Absolution P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

Service of the Word

Introit Psalm 56:3–4, 10–11; antiphon: v. 13

For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life. Kyrie A: In peace let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. A: For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. A: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let

us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. A: For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. A: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. C: Amen. Gloria in Excelsis A: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to His people on earth. C: Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father:

We worship You, we give You thanks, we praise You for Your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God: You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. You are seated at the right hand of the Father; receive our prayer. For You alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the Day P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray.

O God, because Your abiding presence always goes with us, keep us aware of Your daily mercies that we may live secure and content in Your eternal love; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen Sitting Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 20:7–13

O LORD, you have deceived me, and I was deceived; you are stronger than I, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me. For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side! “Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall. “Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.” But the LORD is with me as a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble; they will not overcome me. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten. O LORD of hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind, let me see your

vengeance upon them, for to you have I committed my cause. Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD! For he has

delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers.

A: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Epistle

Romans 6:12–23

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. A: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Standing

Alleluia and Verse C: Alleluia.

Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia.

Holy Gospel Matthew 10:5a, 21-33

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 10th chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, . . . “Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.” P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ.

In Our Prayers

The Lord’s Gifts

Jesus desires to give His gifts to every last human being in the world. And so do we at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Lords Supper is a most magnificent gift because, within it, our Lord comes to us with his very body, and blood (the same body which hung from the cross of Calvary); forgiving us, blessing us, and sending us out to transform the entire world by making Christ known.

This divine food not only makes us divine men and women, but it also forms and strengthens our common life together. To that end, we ask that those who are not under our pastoral care, please speak with Pastor Hoem, prior to communion for the first time at this altar. Our altar is open to those who confess oneness with us in doctrine, are members of our congregation or sister congregations.

All who are not communing, especially young children are encouraged to approach the altar, cross

their arms over their chest, and receive a blessing.

Christ Among Us

As Christians who believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior, Martin Luther encourages us to bless ourselves with the sign of the cross and begin each day in the name of the Triune God, as a reminder of our baptism. To that end, we here at Immanuel, ask Christ to be present with us and begin every service in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Service of the Sacrament

Preface P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord.

P: Let us give thanks unto the Lord, our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Sanctus C: Holy, holy, holy Lord God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving P: Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and

sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Lord’s Prayer C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Pax Domini

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. Agnus Dei C: Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace.

Sitting Distribution

The pastor and those who assist him receive the body and blood of Christ first and then distribute them to those who come to receive, saying:

Take, eat; this is the true body of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, given into death for your sins. Amen. Take, drink; this is the true blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, shed for the forgiveness of your sins. Amen.

In dismissing the communicants, the following is said: P: The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen and preserve you in body and soul to life everlasting. Depart in peace. C: Amen.

Standing

Nunc Dimittis Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace according to Thy word, for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all people a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen

Post-Communion Collect We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Benediction P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to

you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
