Deep Creek Friends Meeting September, 2019 Smokejumpers We hear a lot about fires these days. In less than a year, fires have blazed from Paradise, California to the Amazon rainforest, and multiple parts in-between. How are these disasters being fought? There are many ways that firefighters battle these massive blazes, and one of them is through “smokejumpers”. Smokejumpers are a specially trained, elite force of firefighters that are dropped into the fire from above. The mission of this force is fairly simple. They parachute into an open place and hike to a part of the blaze where firefighters on the perimeter cannot reach. When they reach their drop zone, all five senses are at work to assess that particular location. After they have their bearings, they begin to dig. They dig a line around the flames and put them out. These heroes go where there are no roads, and where aerial spraying is not possible. They are trained to find smaller fires and extinguish them before those flames can become another brutal blaze which can reach the monster blaze that is already underway. Some of the places these smokejumpers land are called Hell’s Canyon, and River of No Return, and other ominous names that describe their deadly mission. These are places that can frequently reach temperatures between 1000 and 2000 degrees…or higher. What do you do when you have been dropped into a situation like that? I was recently reading an article on these special fire forces in “The Guardian”. It recorded one smokejumper saying, “You face something new every time you go out of the plane. It’s up to you to figure it out.” David was in the middle of a fire once. Though chosen to be king, by God and many Israelites, he was on the run from Saul. In I Chronicles we read about many men coming to support David. In chapter 12, it mentions the numbers from each tribe of Israel that came to make sure David became king. In verse 32, the men from the tribe of Issachar are described this way; “[they were] men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do.” Like a smokejumper, the men from Issachar were able to assess desperate situations and respond appropriately. It seems the church in the western part of the world is experiencing a desperate situation. Many polls reveal that the number of professing Christians in our nation, though still high, continues to slowly decline. Along with that, local congre gations find themselves facing cultural, generational, financial, and religious shifts that make it harder to flourish and grow. These descriptions are not far from home. At this very moment in time, one of our sister Friends meetings is in the process of being laid down. The church is facing a fire of challenge and obstacles…but it’s not the first time. Truth be told, the early church was born in the fires of hostility and persecution. No logical plan could have brought the growth, or even the survival of the early church…but survive and grow it did. How do we face the truth that we too have a fire to face if we are to survive and flourish? How do we face our own decline in attendance while our median age is rising? How ca n we find fresh growth, and reach an apathetic but spiritually needy community for Christ? In September we are prayerfully going to explore these, and other, pressing questions. Through a sermon series entitled “The Gospel, the World, and Deep Creek Friends” We hope to look in a mirror at ourselves, look out a window at the world around us, and all the while learn to better fix our eyes on Jesus. You know, they say the best way to fight fire is with fire. My prayer is that we, like the smokejumper, will be willing to honestly assess the situation we are in as a church. We will also see the resou rces and opportunities that God has placed within our reach. I pray we will begin to have a spiritual resilience and an outward focus as a church. May we become deeply convinced that God has a plan and a mission for Deep Creek Friends Meeting. So, how can we get, and give, the most out of this series? Be Present Show up! If Deep Creek Friends is close to your heart…show it by your presence. We hear a lot about fires these days. In less than a year, fires have blazed from Paradise, California to the Amazonrainforest, and multiple parts in-between. How are these disasters being fought? There are many ways that firefighters battle thesemassive blazes, and one of them is through “smokejumpers”. I was recently reading an article on these specialfire forces in “The Guardian”. David was in the middle of a fire once. Though chosen to be king, by God and many Israelites, he was on the run from Saul.In I Chronicles we read about many men coming to support David. In chapter 12, it mentions the numbers from each tribe of Is raelthat came to make sure David became king. It seems the church in the western part of the world is experiencing a desperate situation. Many polls reveal that thenumber of professing Christians in our nation, though still high, continues to slowly decline. Along with that, local congregationsfind themselves facing cultural, generational, financial, and religious shifts that make it harder to flourish and grow. Thesedescriptions are not far from home. Truth be told, the early church was born in the fires of hostility and persecution. No logical plan could have brought thegrowth, or even the survival of the early church…but survive and grow it did. How do we face the truth that we too have a fire toface if we are to survive and flourish? How do we face our own decline in attendance while our median age is rising? How can wefind fresh growth, and reach an apathetic but spiritually needy community for Christ?

In September we are prayerfully going to explore these, and other, pressing questions. May we become deeply convinced that God has a plan and a mission for Deep Creek Friends Meeting.

So, how can we get, and give, the most out of this series?

• Be Present

Show up! If Deep Creek Friends is close to your heart…show it by your presence.

• Be Prepared

In order to show up, we may need to rethink our Saturdays and weekends in general, so that our calendar shows our commitment.

• Be Prayerful

The word “pray” always seems comforting and appropriate, but it is powerless unless it is a raging verb in our souls. Friends, weare all being called to face our prayerlessness.

• Be Present

You may think I am repeating myself, but that’s not the case. Being present in body on a Sunday is only the start. Ask the Lord ofthe Harvest to make you present, not just in body, but in attention and awareness. Be fully present each Sunday.

A Sermon Series this Fall

Beginning September 8th

, Randy will start a series

entitled,

“The Gospel, The World, and Deep Creek Friends.”

It is a challenging time to be a Christian, and

that challenge is multiplied when we think of

these times as a congregation.

What is the future of the church in America?

What is the future of Deep Creek Friends?

Such prophetic questions may not be answered

in a series like this, but the Lord has a message

for us that can, and must, be heard and followed.

In these September Sundays, we trust that the

Holy Spirit will help us understand how to be a

more faithful church in such a fractured time in

human history. There is good news, and there is

hope. However, there may be some hard lessons

to learn as we take a look in the mirror at

ourselves, and a look out the window at the

world, all the time fixing our eyes on Jesus.

Craig Shore has new JobCraig Shore, son

of Tommy and

been hired as

Coordinator of

Fatherhood

Ministries at First

Choice Women’s

Medical Center in

Montgomery,

Alabama. First

Choice is focused

on women’s health, especially for women facing

unplanned pregnancy. But the center also recognizes

a father’s role in helping a woman decide to continue

her pregnancy. And First Choice is committed to

getting the baby’s dad involved and to equipping him

for the role of fatherhood.

Over 30% of children in Alabama grow up in a

fatherless home, increasing their risk for poverty,

abuse and substance use. First Choice wants to

change that statistic. Craig’s role is to meet with men

who come to the center with their partners for

pregnancy testing or ultrasound. He leads fatherhood

support groups and, with volunteers, is building a

mentoring program for dads. You can learn more

foster children, ages 3 & ½ years and 22 months.

Wiley Shore Receives Posthumous honorAt a recent Yadkin County Board of Elections

meeting, Wiley Shore was recognized for having

served 25 years as an Election Judge at Boonville

Precinct. For 25 years Wiley was on hand to register

people, give them the ballot and help maintain an

orderly voting place. He served in the era when all

votes, were counted by hand. Often workers were

counting until 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning to get the

results in. He got his son, Walter, involved in the

vote counting and when he decided to step down

Walter took his place as Judge. Walter, now

Chairman of the County Board of Elections, was

unexpectedly presented the Certificate along withexpressions of appreciation for Wiley's years of service.
