What is an Empire?
An empire is an extensive group of many different peoples that is united
and ruled by an emperor or other monarch.
Empire
The word empire is derived from the Latin term “imperium” which means power and authority.
An empire is established and maintained in two ways. Through force with action to take over other
territories to adhere to the emperors goals. Through indirect force. By threatening other
territories by giving off the perception that they can physically enforce the goals of the emperor.
Rise of the Mauryan Empire The rulers of the Magadha kingdom were
the first to try and unify much of India. _________________________
A powerful young adventurer who established the Mauryan Empire which ruled for almost 150 years.
He raised an army over 600,000 soldiers who were equipped with thousands of chariots and elephants.
Chandragupta Maurya gave up his throne to his son in about 300 b.c.
Rise of the Mauryan Empire
ASOKA Chandragupta's grandson Came to power in about 270 b.c. Early in his rule he fought very bloody
wars to increase the size of his kingdom Enlarged the Mauryan Empire until it
included almost all of India. This was the first imperial dynasty to control almost all of India
The Fall of the Mauryan Empire
ASOKA cont… Asoka became tired of the bloody battles
and became a Buddhist. Asoka died in about 232 b.c. ▪ This began the slow decline of the Mauryan
Empire▪ His sons fought over the throne as invaders
attacked the northern provinces▪ After some 140 years the once mighty
Mauryan Empire collapsed
The Gupta Rulers
The rise of a new dynasty also contributed to the relative decline of Buddhism and the growth of Hinduism
The Gupta family began to expand their territory through conquest and intermarriage
During the Gupta era Hinduism became the main religion in India
The early years of Gupta rule were known as a golden age
The Gupta Rulers
CHANDRA GUPTA II ruled from A.D. 374-415. Society prospered as great progress was
made in the arts as well. Under the later rulers the great empire
became wakened. The Gupta political system was less centralized than the Mauryan government and gave more power to the local leaders.
Gupta rule ended by about A.D. 550
