Future CityFuture Cities Project stimulates multidisciplinary work, promoting collaboration among partners from different areas.

Contains a living lab, by providing it with a wide range of sensors and communication equipment, thus creating the conditions for future research and development using advanced technologies for data collection through mobile platforms, wireless communication and large-scale information processing.

This living lab enables the development of research in areas such as sustainability, mobility, urban planning and information and communication technology.

Agriculture

produces our food and keeps the land rich

Raising animals and growing fruits and vegetables are what nourishes our body

Land - improves soil structure and protects it against erosion and nutrient loss by maintaining a permanent soil cover and minimizing soil disturbance.

Water - requires significantly less water use due to increased infiltration and enhanced water holding capacity. Mulches also protect the soil surface from extreme temperatures and greatly reduce surface evaporation.

Introduction

We were given a task to create our own city. Putting ourselves as the mayor, we will have to rebuilt our city that has been destroyed. We had been given various topics such as an Underground City, an Underwater City, a Floating on Water City, a City in the Air (or sky scraper city) and On land next to a river or sea. My group has chose the topic on land next to river or sea. So we had to design the whole city related to the topic. We had to do lots of research and planning as we wanted our city to be a sustainably one. The main purpose of this project is to allow us students to explore, differentiate and compare the basic elements such as natural topography, landscape, space, building and infrastructure.

A livable city

• Having efficient public transportation

• Having education, health services, cultural facilities and job opportunities.

• It should be walkable with large footpaths along its roads.

• It should be totally automobile independent, as all the major cities of the world such as, London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore.

• The roads should be full of taxis and buses with a minimum of private vehicles. In these cities one does not need a driving license to survive.

• Great public places where people can congregate.

• Housing for all its citizens.

How I came up with the idea of my city

I got inspired by our national flower, the hibiscus. It reminds us of our love for our country. It also represents unity that we need to make our city a peaceful place.

Different types of layout of major cities

I used this as a reference to create the layout of my city. As it has so many different types of layout which gives me a wider range to design one for my city.

Basically, its a plan or sketch, as of an advertisement or a page of a newspaper or magazine, indicating the arrangement and relationship of the parts, as of type and artwork.

What is a layout?

Riveria Oasis

The city was hit by a horrendous tornado. It was the worst natural disaster ever faced by the citizens there. Not a single person was prepared to face it. One fine day, as everyone was doing their daily routine as usual, the worst thing happened to the citizens there. They were attacked by a tornado. Everyone was panicking and running away from it but it was not a success. Most of the buildings were crushed and buried, nothing was left. It soon became a deserted island as too much money was needed to be invested to rebuilt the city all over again.

This was when, I was chosen to become the mayor. After much thinking, I have decided to redevelop this city as nothing was impossible to do if we had to desire to do it. I needed to work very hard and efficient as it had to be designed and build from scratch. After all the planning and researches I did, I proudly present to you, Riveria Oasis. This is where the future begins!

Conclusion

A good city, is a city which is diverse, clean, safe and has a healthy environment. What I’ve learnt is that the key features to a successful city is the presence of nature, clean, attractive public spaces and buildings, walkable city centers and safe neighbourhoods. It will also need the participation of everyone if we want the place to be a successful area. We also need to remember that cities are not only places for people, but it is also for tress, plants and animals. Public transportation also has to be efficient so that all the citizens can reduce the amount of cars on the road. Which will then improve the air quality We must also have a proper way to dispose all of our rubbish and not just throw it at the side of the road. Adding on to that, human or animal waste can be a form of fertilizers too.
