The Chinese Civilization

Oracle bones with ancient Chinese writing fromthe Shang Dynasty have been radiocarbon datedto as early as 1500 BC.

The origins of the present-day Chinese culture, literature and philosophy developed during theZhou Dynasty (1045 – 256 BC).

The Zhou Dynasty began to bow to external and

pressures in the 8th century BC, and the kingdomeventually broke apart into smaller states, beginning in the Spring and Autumn period andreaching full expression in the warring statesperiod.

The Chinese Civilization

In between eras of multiple kingdoms andwarlordism, Chinese dynasties (or, morerecently, the republics) have ruled all of China

(minus Xinjiang and Tibet) (and, in some eras, including the present, they have controlledXinjiang and Tibet as well).

This practice began with the Qin dynasty: in221 BC, Qin Shi Huang united the variouswarring kingdoms and created the first

Chinese empire.

QING DYNASTY

The Qing Dynasty (1644 –1911) was the last imperial dynasty inChina and was the second non-Han dynasty founded bythe Manchus. The Manchus were formerly known asthe Jurchen residing in the northeastern part of the Mingterritory outside the Great Wall. They emerged as the majorthreat to the late Ming Dynasty after Nurhaci united all Jurchentribes and established an independent state. However, the Ming Dynasty would be overthrown by Li Zicheng's peasantrebel, with Beijing captured in 1644 and the last MingEmperor Chongzhen committed suicide. The Manchu thenallied with Ming Dynasty general Wu Sangui and seizedBeijing, which became the new capital of the Qing dynasty, andproceeded to subdue the remaining Ming's resistance in thesouth. The decades of Manchu conquest caused enormousloss of lives and the economic scale of China shrank drastically.

The Chinese Civilization

Successive dynasties in Chinese history developedbureaucratic systems that enabled the Emperor ofChina to directly control vast territories.

The conventional view of Chinese history is that ofalternating periods of political unity and disunity, withChina occasionally being dominated by Inner Asianpeople, most of whom were in turn assimilated intothe Han Chinese population.

Cultural and political influences from many parts ofAsia, carried by successive waves of immigration, expansion, and cultural assimilation, are part of themodern culture of China.
