Welcome to AncestryDNA Helper Extension A tool that brings more analytical power to your Ancestry.com DNA matches.

elcome to AncestryDNA Helper Extension!

AncestryDNA Helper Extension is a free extension for the Google Chrome browser. It will unlock some of the power needed to get the most out of

your Ancestry.com DNA matches. This tool is useful if you have access to just one Ancestry.com DNA profile or if you have access to many Ancestry.com profiles. As more and more people have their DNA tested through Ancestry.com, you are able to analyze all your matches and discover relationships hidden in their family trees.

What is AncestryDNA Helper Extension? The AncestryDNA Helper Extension helps with analyzing and comparing your AncestryDNA test results. The automated scanner, accessible using the Full Scan and Resume Scan buttons added to your DNA Home Page, will go through your list of DNA matches and open each one to scan their pedigree charts.

Why should I use AncestryDNA Helper Extension? AncestryDNA Helper Extension is one more tool in your quest to analyze the wealth of information contained in Ancestry.com DNA matches and their pedigree charts. Some of the features include:

Search for DNA match by Ancestry.com username

Search for words in your Ancestry.com Notes

Compare two tests for common matches and optionally download the matches

What AncestryDNA Helper Extension does Once the scanning process is complete, you can download your list of matches and pedigree charts as .csv files for analyzing them in a spreadsheet or database program. You can also use the additional search features added to the top of your matches list to search for matches by usernames or exact/similar surnames. The “ancestors of matches” report includes an incidence value for each row that calculates how frequently people with the same name and a similar birth year appear among your matches. This value can be useful for detecting possible common lines of descent.

If you have multiple DNA tests under your account, a new shared match icon will appear next to each match allowing you to easily see which other test(s) also match this same result by hovering your mouse over this icon. You can compare two or three of your tests to each other using the compare features at the bottom of your DNA Home Page.

User Guide – Installation and Scanning The following pages will guide you through the process of installing and updating AncestryDNA Helper Extension. It will also guide you through the process of adding Ancestry.com DNA matches to the database. Other user guides are available to help you with making the most of the features and functionality.

Overview of AncestryDNA Helper Extension

he AncestryDNA Helper Extension provides features and functions to analyze the Ancestry DNA matches in all the Ancestry DNA profiles you can access. AncestryDNA Helper Extension creates a local database on your computer and provides a simple way to access the database.1

Two parts of AncestryDNA Helper Extension There are two parts to using the AncestryDNA Helper Extension

Adding Ancestry.com DNA matches to the database

Using AncestryDNA Helper Extension features and functions to analyze the Ancestry DNA matches.

Adding matches to the database has 2 steps Adding entries to the database is a 2-step process:.

In the first step, a scan will add all the existing DNA matches to the database. Typically, this function is performed only once.

As more and more people submit their DNA tests to Ancestry, new DNA matches become available. To add these new DNA matches to the AncestryDNA Helper Extension database, a resume scan is performed. Because new DNA matches are created almost every day, this second step, RESUME SCAN, is repeated on a regular basis to update the AncestryDNA Helper Extension database.

Adding Ancestry.com DNA matches to the database (SCAN) AncestryDNA Helper Extension has a local database. The user adds the Ancestry.com DNA matches to the AncestryDNA Helper Extension database.

hen the AncestryDNA Helper Extension is installed in the Chrome browser, it will create an empty database. In order to add a Ancestry.com DNA profile’s DNA matches to the database, a scan must be completed. The SCAN will read the entire list of DNA matches associated with the current

profile and add them to the database. The SCAN function should only be used once on each DNA profile. When Ancestry finds new DNA matches and puts them in your Ancestry.com profile, the user will invoke the RESUME SCAN function to add the new matches to the AncestryDNA Helper Extension database.

Summary of Steps Here are the steps for managing the database. The first 2 topics are covered in this chapter:

* Scan your DNA profile to add your DNA matches to the database * Scan additional DNA profiles to add the DNA matches to the database

These topics are covered in the following chapters:

* Resume Scan to add new matches to the database * Retry Skipped Matches to add missed matches to the database

What do I need to do? After installing the AncestryDNA Helper Extension, the following steps are typical to maintain the database:

Perform once

o SCAN each Ancestry.com DNA profile that you manage or you can access. This will add the existing DNA matches to the AncestryDNA Helper Extension database.

Perform periodically (recommended weekly)

o RESUME SCAN to add the new Ancestry.com DNA matches added to the Ancestry.com profiles since the last SCAN or RESUME SCAN.

What a SCAN does The AncestryDNA Helper scan has two phases:

Phase 1, AncestryDNA Helper simulates a user manually clicking through all of the pages of the matches list and trashed matches list for one or more Ancestry.com DNA profiles, depending on which button you clicked; and

Phase 2, AncestryDNA Helper Extension views each match details page one by one that it hasn’t marked as scanned yet, so that you don’t have to do it yourself. The RESUME SCAN button skips directly to the Phase 2.

AncestryDNA Helper Extension is designed with the following assumptions:

The user wants all Ancestry.com DNA matches for the profiles the user manages or can access added to the database.

The user will perform an initial SCAN to add all existing Ancestry.com DNA matches to the database

A user will want to add all new Ancestry.com DNA matches to the database

A RESUME SCAN will add to the database any matches that completed Phase 1.

A SCAN is designed to complete Phase 1 and Phase 2 on an entire Ancestry.com DNA profile. Some DNA profiles can have 30,000+ matches. Once a SCAN is started, a SCAN will go to completion. If a SCAN is interrupted, a RESUME SCAN will continue the scan of the entire profile. That means each time the RESUME SCAN is started, it will complete any outstanding SCANs.

Note

16 Version: 13 March 2018

Perform a Full SCAN of a DNA profile

The speed of a scan is highly dependent on the number of matches you have, the speed of your computer, the speed of your Internet connection and the activity going on with the Ancestry.com website at the time. The faster your computer and Internet speeds, the faster your scan will be.

There are reports that a SCAN will mark each match as “new” in a Ancestry.com profile. This is a bug that occasionally reappears when Ancestry.com makes updates to its website.

A SCAN should be executed only once on each Ancestry.com DNA profile. RESUME SCAN should be used to add new DNA matches.

Once a SCAN is started on a Ancestry.com DNA profile, it will scan all the matches. If the SCAN is interrupted, a RESUME SCAN will continue the initial scan. AncestryDNA Helper is designed to complete a SCAN once it is started, no matter how many times it is interrupted and resumed.

A SCAN can take days to complete. It is not uncommon to have a SCAN last 4 or 5 days. Many factors affect the speed of a SCAN. Items that you can control to decrease the amount of time for a SCAN include;

your computer configuration (processor speed, maximum amount of RAM, install a solid-state disk drive) and

High speed internet connection.

Factors that you cannot control

the number of Ancestry.com DNA matches,

For clarity, the following two terms are used:

* Main Tab - refers to the Chrome browser tab in which the use initiates a scan.

* Status Tab – refers to the Chrome browser tab the AncestryDNA Helper Extension creates and displays the progress of the scan.

A SCAN is completed when the Status Tab closes by itself. There are times when the SCAN completes and an error message is displayed in the Status Tab. In this case, close the Status Tab and return to the Main Tab. Click RESUME SCAN. If no Status Tab is created, then the SCAN is complete.

AncestryDNA Helper Extension may seem to do nothing when first SCAN is started, so walk away and give it time to do what it needs to do to get started. There is a lot going on behind the scenes as it starts the scan. Wait at least 30 minutes before taking any action.

Once the AncestryDNA Helper extension starts scanning, it will open a Status Tab in the Chrome browser. You may find it difficult to use the Chrome browser for any other work until the scan is complete. If possible, it is best to leave the scan running until it completes.

It is not uncommon for AncestryDNA Helper Extension to open multiple Status Tabs.

When the AncestryDNA Helper Extension is running, several things can cause an interruption during a scan. Many of the problems are external to the AncestryDNA Helper Extension.

See chapter AncestryDNA Helper Extension Potential Scanning Issues if there are problems with scanning.

Scan additional Ancestry.com DNA profiles If you manage or have access to more than one Ancestry.com DNA profile, you can add their matches to the database by running a scan on each of the DNA profiles. The process for scanning each additional profile is the same as scanning your main DNA profile.

Repeat this procedure for each additional Ancestry.com DNA profile you wish to add to the database.

Wait until a previously started SCAN is completed before scanning the next Ancestry.com DNA profile.

1. Open the Chrome browser.

2. Sign in to Ancestry.com with your username and password

Adding new Ancestry.com DNA matches to databases (RESUME SCAN) The user periodically adds new Ancestry.com DNA matches to the database.

s more and more people submit their DNA tests to Ancestry.com, new DNA matches become available. It is not uncommon for a Ancestry.com to add 1500+ new DNA matches to a single DNA profile in a week. To add these new DNA matches to the AncestryDNA Helper Extension database, a

RESUME SCAN is performed. Because new DNA matches are created almost every day, this second step, RESUME SCAN, is repeated on a regular basis to update the AncestryDNA Helper Extension database.

Adding new DNA matches to database In order to add new DNA matches to the database, you must manually perform Phase 1 of the scan and then click on RESUME SCAN to complete Phase 2.

* Phase 1, the user clicks through all of the pages of the matches list for one or more tests; and

* Phase 2, for all matches in all profiles that has completed Phase 1, AncestryDNA Helper views each match details page not marked as scanned and adds the information to the database

In other words, once a DNA match not currently in the database is displayed on the Ancestry webpage or the DNA match’s detail page is visited, the DNA match is considered to have completed Phase 1. Therefore, the next time RESUME SCAN is initiated, the DNA match will be scan as part of Phase 2.

You can click on the button RESUME SCAN on any DNA profile to complete Phase 2 for all DNA profiles

To better manage your time, you can perform Phase 1 on a subset of the Ancestry.com DNA profiles, click RESUME SCAN and then perform Phase 1 on remaining Ancestry.com DNA profiles at a later time

A match that has been moved to your Ancestry.com list of removed matches is added to the database

Any DNA profile that had a SCAN interrupted will continue when RESUME SCAN is clicked

Phase 1 and Phase 2 can be interrupted and resumed at any time

A typical RESUME SCAN for a single profile performed weekly is less than 1 hour.

The actual time will depend on the number of new DNA matches, your computer configuration, internet connection speed and the activity on the Ancestry.com website.

AncestryDNA Helper Extension Potential Scanning Issues Sometimes things don’t always go the way we planned. Fortunately, you can recover.

oftware is not perfect. In the ever-changing world of the Worldwide Web, software is modified, updated and enhanced without the coordination of all the other software products that interact with it. Interaction between different software packages must be constantly tested and, when issues arise, these issues

are addressed. Fortunately we have some work arounds to help us over the rough spots.

Potential Scanning Issues

If you delete (uninstall) the AncestryDNA Helper Extension, the database will be deleted. If you do not have a backup copy of the database, you will need to SCAN all Ancestry.com DNA profiles

There are a few issues that may arise when scanning.

* Chrome browser hang * Chrome browser “Aw, Snap” screen * Sorry, this match no longer exists. * Whitelabel Error Page

For clarity, the following two terms are used:

* Main Tab - refers to the Chrome browser tab in which the use initiates a scan.

* Status Tab – refers to the Chrome browser tab the AncestryDNA Helper Extension creates and displays the progress of the scan.

Chrome browser hang This condition is detected when no activity is observed in the status tab for more than 10 minutes.

One way to detect a Chrome browser hang is look at the Status Tab. Take note of the Ancestry.com DNA profile name and the match name. If it has not changed in 10 minutes, most likely the browser is hung.

During a scan, the Chrome browser can hang for a number of reasons. The cause of the Chrome browser hang is not always apparent. In order to recover from a browser hang or an error while scanning, there are a few alternatives. It is recommended that you try the alternatives one at a time until the hang does not re-occur in a short amount of time. Try the first method. If another hang occurs shortly after resuming a scan, try the next method, and so on.

Use the following methods in the order listed to recover from a scan that hangs or stops prematurely.

Method 4 – Wait a few days and resume the scan

1. When Ancestry.com is updating the application, it can disrupt the execution of the AncestryDNA Helper Extension. Check the Yahoo Groups AncestryDNA Helper Discussion group for any messages concerning users having recent scanning issues due to Ancestry.com updates. If no problems have been reported, post a description of the problem you are having and someone in the group will respond.
