Unit 3 Notes:Blood Typing
(1) Antigens and Antibodies
• Antigens:– The protein ID tags on the surface of all cells.– Used to identify the different types of cells.– Determine blood type.
• Antibodies:– The free-floating proteins in blood used to bind
to, and identify foreign cells.
• Antibody & Antigen Options:– A , B , Rh (“positive”)
(2) The Blood Types• A , B , AB, O
• A+ , B+ , AB+ , O+
• “Negative” Blood Types = Non-Positive
(3) Donating• Can donate to anyone who has AT LEAST ALL of
the same antigens you have.
• *The person you donate to could have MORE antigens than you, but they cannot have LESS.
• Example:– Blood Type AB = A and B antigens– They can donate to anyone who at least has A and B
antigens.– They can donate to…
• Type AB• Type AB+
(4) Receiving• Can receive from any person whose
antigens will not match your antibodies.
• Example:– Blood Type AB = A and B antigens– They would have only the Rh-antibodies.– They only CAN’T receive positive blood types…– So they CAN receive ANY negative types:• A , B , O , AB
(5) Type O• Antigens = None
• Antibodies = A, B, and Rh
• Can Donate To:– All blood types – They have zero antigens so no one’s body will detect it
as foreign!
• Can Receive From:– Only Type O– They have every type of antibody
(6) Type O Positive• Antigens = Only Rh
• Antibodies = A and B
• Can Donate To:– All positive blood types – They only have the Rh antigen so any positive
types can take it!
• Can Receive From:– Type O and O+
(7) Type AB• Antigens = A and B
• Antibodies = Rh
• Can Donate To:– Type AB– Type AB+
• Can Receive From:– Type A– Type B– Type AB– Type O
(8) Type AB Positive• Antigens = A, B and Rh
• Antibodies = None
• Can Donate To:– Only Type AB+
• Can Receive From:– Type A and A+– Type B and B+– Type AB and AB+– Type O and O+
(9) Type A• Antigens = Only A
• Antibodies = B and Rh
• Can Donate To:– Type A and A+– Type AB and AB+
• Can Receive From:– Type A– Type O
(10) Type A Positive• Antigens = A Rh
• Antibodies = B
• Can Donate To:– Type A+– Type AB+
• Can Receive From:– Type A and Type A+– Type O and Type O+
(11) Type B• Antigens = Only B
• Antibodies = A and Rh
• Can Donate To:– Type B and B+– Type AB and AB+
• Can Receive From:– Type B– Type O
(12) Type B Positive• Antigens = B and Rh
• Antibodies = A
• Can Donate To:– Type B+– Type AB+
• Can Receive From:– Type B and B+– Type O and O+
