anaphylactic reactions to chlorhexidine

Reactions 1459 - 6 Jul 2013 Since 2000, New Zealand’s Centre for Adverse Reaction Monitoring (CARM) has received 69 reports of anaphylactic reactions to products containing chlorhexidine. A number of medicines, including OTC antiseptic creams/gels, dressings, mouthwashes, eye drops and nasal sprays all include chlorhexidine. MedSafe cites a recent case series on anaphylaxis in patients who received chlorhexidine in lubricants used in urethral catheterization. The case series authors postulated that the variety and increasing use of chlorhexidine-containing products was leading to sensitization. CARM has received eight reports of anaphylactic reactions to chlorhexidine/lignocaine combination products in men, aged 22 to 79 years old, undergoing urinary catheterization. Of the eight cases, five reported skin prick tests, of which four were positive for chlorhexidine sensitivity. Medsafe. Chlorhexidine -- Risk of Anaphylaxis.
