Raymond Duncan Raymond Duncan (1874-1966) was an American dancer, artist, poet, craftsman, and philosopher. Born in San Francisco. In 1891, at the age of 17, he developed a theory of movement which he called kinematics, "a remarkable synthesis of the movements of labor and of daily life." He believed that the value of labor was the development of the worker, not production or earnings. In 1898 he and his mother left America and worked for a time in London, Berlin, Athens, and Paris. Duncan's theory of movement led him to work particularly closely with his sister Isadora, a noted dancer. In 1909 Raymond and Penelope returned to the United States for a series of performances of classical Greek plays. The couple also gave lectures and classes on folk music, weaving, dancing, and Greek music. They then spent several months in the Pacific Northwest with the Klamath Indians. In 1911 Duncan and Penelope returned to Paris and founded a school, the Akademia Raymond Duncan, at 31 Rue de Seine, which offered free courses in their specialty areas of dance, arts, and crafts; they later opened a similar school in London. Both schools were based on the idea of the Platonic Academy and both were "an open house for every new effort in theater, literature, music and art." In addition to his artistic and creative pursuits, Duncan found time to write poetry and plays, as well as books, newspapers, and editorials expounding his philosophy of "actionalism." At the age of 73, he proposed creating the city of "New Paris York" at latitude 45N, longitude 36W (in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean) as a symbol of cooperation and inter-cultural communication. National Geographic Society – Palomar Observatory Sky Survey The National Geographic Society – Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (NGS-POSS) is a major photographic survey of the night sky that was completed at Palomar Observatory in 1958. The photographs were taken with the 48-inch Samuel Oschin telescope at Palomar Observatory, and the Survey was funded by a grant from the National Geographic Society to the California Institute of Technology. Among the primary minds behind the project were Edwin Hubble, Milton L. Humason, Walter Baade, Ira Sprague Bowen and Rudolph Minkowski. The first plate was exposed on November 11, 1949. 99% of the plates were taken by June 20, 1956, but the final 1% was not completed until December 10, 1958. The Survey utilized 14-inch square photographic plates, covering about 6° of sky per side (approximately 36 square degrees per plate). Each region of the sky was photographed twice, once using a red sensitive Kodak 103a-E plate, and once with a blue sensitive Kodak 103a-O plate. This allowed the color of celestial objects to be recorded. The Survey was originally meant to cover the sky from the north celestial pole to -24° declination. This figure specifies the position of the plate center, hence the actual coverage under the original plan would have been to approximately -27°. It was expected that 879 plate pairs would be required. However the Survey was ultimately extended to -30° plate centers, giving irregular coverage to as far south as -34° declination, and utilizing 936 total plate pairs. The limiting magnitude of the survey varied depending on the region of the sky, but is commonly quoted as 22nd magnitude on average. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adolphe L. Neyt, Belgian amateur photographer Born in Gent 13 April 1830, Neyt developed a reputation as an enthusiastic amateur of scientific photography, concentrating on astronomical and microscopical sub-jects. His ability to enlarge these images while retaining the clarity of the original was much admired. Most of Neyt's extant photographs were made in the 1860s, when he also joined both the Société française de photographie (1864-1885) and the Association belge de photographie. In 1869, a dozen of his photographs of the moon were presented to the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences. Neyt perfected a method of making images through a telescope attached to a clockwork, enlarging them to a size of 25 centimeters in diameter with a camera obscura. Some, or perhaps all, of these lunar images were exhibited at the 1873 International Exhibition in Vienna. After a period of inactivity he was noticed again in the 1880s with marine images. Neyt died in Oostende 21 September 1892. Kelley Wilder

Nikolaï Kossikoff, The port of Ghent Nikolaï Kossikoff came to Belgium as a Russian immigrant after the Russian Revolution. Photography wasn't his primary profession but with his skills in mechanics and engineering he rapidly acquired the art of photography. Those are the facts. But reading the biography by his own hand (it is conserved in the Fotomuseum of Antwerp) the story is a little different and his interest in photography came from his father who was an amateur photographer. His father hunted geese and images and Nikolaï did the same. Kossikoff was born in 1898 in Kharkoff, White Russia, he escaped to North Africa after the Russian Revolution and later to Paris. He used to belong to the rich Russian aristocracy but due to his flight he had to interrupt his studies in engineering in order to survive on heavy manual labour. During his stay in Paris Nikolaï Kossikoff came into contact with the avant-garde art movement of the Twenties. In 1923 he arrived in Ghent where he first worked as an artist painter in the restauration works of churches. Only in 1935 he took back up his old hobby of photography, now in order to survive. Being self-educated he developed his own technique and style. From 1935 until the Second World War he worked on the documentary of the port. During the war he was forced to go into hiding. After the war he started up a portrait studio where he tried to make spontaneous portraits full of character. His portrait photography was quite successful. He stopped with photography in 1954 and died in 1975 in Ghent.
