Analytical Drawing and Chindogu In order to support the development of your Chindogu, you will be introduced to the process of Analytical Drawing. Analytical drawing is how Product Designers begin to brainstorm concepts and construction methods for their prototypes before materials are chosen and prototypes are built. Analytical drawings (like architectural ‘walk-throughs’) also pre-visualize a product for a client, and can be used to persuade them on more expensive prototyping or to continue development. By breaking objects down to basic geometric shapes that exist in perspectival space, analytical drawing allows the viewer to conceive the inner workings of a three-dimensional form on a two-dimensional plane. Analytical drawings can also describe how an object is assembled through an “exploding view” or can demonstrate how and object relates to the ergonomics of the body. Ergonomic View Exploding View Ergonomic View – describes the product as it would be worn, relate to, or interact with the body. Exploding View – the exploding view is similar to an Axonometric drawing except the exploding view describes how a product comes apart piece by piece in space. It also reveals if there are functional internal objects/compartments for the user that cannot be seen from the exterior of the product alone (ex, swiss army knife).

Analytical Drawing and Chindogu

In order to support the development of your Chindogu, you will be introduced to the process of Analytical Drawing. Analytical drawings can also describe how an object is assembled through an “exploding view” or can demonstrate

how and object relates to the ergonomics of the body.

Paraline Drawing – describes the form of an object by using parallel lines only. Lines do not recede to a vanishing point. Axonometric Drawing – The word axonometric means 'measured axes'. Axonometric drawings are always drawn on a 45-degree angle (from a corner view of an object) and reveal the front, side and top of a product in one view.

Orthographic Drawing – describes the object as it can be viewed from each side. • Plan – View of an object as it appears from the top. (center cell phone) • Elevation – View of an object as it appears from the side.

Plan, Section and Elevation Plan, Section, and Elevation views are the primary views of architectural drawings. For the purpose of construction, they describe size, scale and the way structures are put together. In design and presentation drawings they can be used to illustrate concepts, atmosphere and the relationships between spaces.

Plan – View from above looking down. Elevation – View from the side. Section – Cross-section side view as if the object was sliced in half. Final Assignment: In the final drawing portion of your Chindogu project, you will be creating a series of composed illustrations that consist of a minimum of three (3) analytical views of your Chindogu and one (1) Ergonomic View that reflects the object’s color, material/texture and function through the use of watercolor or color pencil. The final drawings will be scanned or photographed and edited in Photoshop before being placed into your Product Design Brief. When working on your Product Brief make sure to label each drawing (ex. Section, Exploding View). The Product Design Brief of your Chindogu will be 22x30 inches at (300 dpi), CMYK color in Photoshop. Your layout must include the following: product title, product description, photos that express the function of your Chindogu in use, analytical drawings, ergonomic drawings, research images and any necessary labeling. The use of color, typography and image organization should further support the look and feel of your Chindogu.
