Page 1: Analysis the verve

The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony The video to ‘bittersweet symphony’ is a performance based video throughout and is based on the singer being unable to change. Concept is added to the video as the video is generally based on the concept that nothing ever changes and there seems nothing to look to the future for. The video I based on the concept that if nothing and no one ever changes then why should I and why should I care. The video is based on the day in the life of the principle character as he is recorded whilst walking from one end of a road to another and shows the attitude of the character, which relates back to the lyrics of the video. The fact that the male complains about the lack of change in his life and the video of him walking from one end to the other of a road may signal that the male is ‘coming to the end of the road’ in life. The video opens to a very common a possible run down area. The music video opens to a shot of the principle character/artist staring to the other end of the road although the location can be used to effect. The opening shot is taken of a very common/main road in a possible run down area. In the background to the opening shot, we can also see pavement works and rubbish floating about on the floor, which can be used to represent the location as middle classed and a very urbanized location. As the character continues to walk down the road, we are able to see rubbish bags left on the pavement and the area looks to be very run down from the background of the tracking shot. The location is used effectively as the location relates back to the urbanized target audience for the indie genre and allows the audience to relate themselves to their idols and favourite indie bands.

The representation of the lead singer and band also relate back to the indie genre as the costume presented by the band members relates back to the image of their target audience. The artist is represented through the indie’s style as the artist is shot in uncared for clothes and slight rags. The artist is similar to the representation of many indie music videos such as ‘the kooks-naïve’, as the artist features in an old looking leather jacket and skinny type jeans. The colour is also effective as the clothes are black which do not stand out which relates back to the image of the indie genre. Close up shots are also taken at parts of the video which are used to present to the audience, the facial image of the band as the artist especially has long curly hair which is the obvious hairstyle within the

indie image and the look is followed by other indie artists and commonly by the indie audience.

As the music video progresses towards the end of the video, a long tracking shot is taken as the audience sees the rest of the band join the lead singer on his journey. This is used to advertise the whole band to the audience and can be used to represent the image of the band to the audience and so possibly the audience can follow the trend of the band.
