APPROACH

On Content…Conformity, from the point of view of the planner, is di"-

cult to avoid but to avoid it deliberately, by creating arti#cial diversions,

is surely worse than the original boredom…Within a commonly ac-

cepted framework- one that produces lucidity and not anarchy- we can

manipulate the nuances of scale and style, of texture and colour and of

character and individuality, juxtaposing them in order to produce col-

lective bene#ts…It is a matter of observation that in a successful con-

trast of colours not only do we experience the harmony released but,

equally, the colours become more truly themselves. In a large landscape

by Corot, I forgot its name, a landscape of sombre greens, almost a

monochrome, there is a small #gure in red. It is probably the reddest

thing I have ever seen.

Gordon Cullen, Townscape.

‘…the passion for improvisation, which demands that space and op-

portunity be at any price preserved. Buildings are used as a popular

stage. They are all divided into innumerable, simultaneously animated

theatres. Balcony, courtyard, window, gateway, staircase, roof are at the

same time stages and boxes.’

Walter Benjamin, ‘One Way Street’, 1924

Human beings are $exible creatures. We move about at will, manipulate

objects and operate in a wide range of environments. There was a time,

not too long ago in evolutionary terms, when our existence was based

on our capacity for movement and adptability; indeed it is to this that

we owe our survival as a species. Robert Kronenburg. Flexible; architec-

ture that responds to change. 2007

The design of contemporary housing is not something that can be re-

duced to a speci#c set of rigid rule to provide a universal model. Indeed,

some projects designed this way, although carried out with great care,

can now be labelled as “obstructive environments” that restrict individu-

als’ ability to use their new home properly. Antje Flade, “Psyhological

Considerations of a dwelling” 2002
