ANALYSIS OF CREDIT AND FILM TITLE SEQUENCE

Vanessa Florant

Page 2: Analysis of title sequence

The short film first introduces the audience to the name of the production company: Triune films. Instantly, the audience are aware of who is responsible for producing the film. The design of the logo that they have chosen is easy on the eye and bold whilst the text is clear, simplistic and well-spaced. Mainstream film companies also use logos and fonts like these because the text is easily readable and the logo captures the audience’s attention.

Next, we see the title of the film – Losses. This is also written in a clear, bold and simplistic font, more specifically it is the same font that was used to write the production company name. This makes it easy for the audience to make the link between the title and the production company as it shows consistency. The black background used to support the text suggests that the following events in the short film will be intense and mysterious which as a result provokes enigmas.

The first credit shows that Ryan Connolly was responsible for writing, directing, filming and editing Losses. Usually in mainstream media products, a range of people share these roles. Nevertheless, as this is a short film and the scale of production is much smaller, this has made it possible for Ryan Connolly to play multiple roles. Ryan’s name is the boldest and biggest writing on the screen, also it appears first- highlighting the importance of his roles.

Michael Stark was in charge of the visual effects seen in this short film which means that he helped Ryan with parts of editing. Once again, Michael's name is larger than the surrounding text and his name appears after Mark’s because the Mark wants the audience to be able to identify with the importance of Michael's role.

The main cast are featured next within the credit sequence. All four of their names are written in the same sized font which shows that their roles are as equally important as one an another’s and that their roles within the sequence have shaped the narrative.

The rest of the crew members are featured afterwards on this frame. However, this does not mean that these roles were not important. It is simply shown like this because it will take too much time to dedicate frames to each role as there are many within the production of a film. This frame recognises and appreciates everyone who has helped the production process to prosper. This type of credit sequence is usual at the end of a mainstream film. Commonly, behind the scenes clips are also shown at the end of mainstream films. This shows that Triune films are trying to keep to the conventions of film credit sequences.

Again there are more members who were involved in the production and another behind the scenes clip. The only negative about this frame is that the writing below ‘Cast’ is very small. I had to look very closely in order to see that it says ‘In order of appearance’

The end of the credit sequence is marked by Triune films paying a special thanks to some individuals. This isn't a typical convention within film credit sequences but some films may include this – especially if the film was a true story.
