Analysis of Taylor Swift Rollingstone magazine cover

By Lauren Sharpe.

C:\Users\Lauren\Documents\A-level\Taylor-Swift-Rolling-Stone-Cover (1).jpgA star is an image not a real person-Richard Dyer. For example the representation of Taylor Swift in this magazine has been manipulated to fit the genre of this music magazine which is rock. This has been achieved by her make up and hair the eye makeup is much darker than is usually used by Taylor Swifts makeup artist, this is an example of using stereotyping to create an image that the target audience can identify with for example a sign of a classic rock chic is the use of dark eye liner. Her hair is also framed around her face and half covering it in order to make her look more mysterious, her eyes are also fixated on the camera with a harsh stare which is again a stereotype of rock chics that they are more serious and perhaps angrier. All of these create the indexical sign of a rock star which is the genre that Rollingstone usually represents.

C:\Users\Lauren\Documents\A-level\Taylor-Swift-Rolling-Stone-Cover (1).jpgLaura Mulvey suggest that women do things to attract the male gaze Taylor Swift is challenging this theory in this particular cover shoot. Her more morbid image is suggesting women do not always have to appear pretty and feminine.

As Stuart Hall suggests representations are changing, were usually women would be represented as cute, pretty and innocent, Taylor Swift is challenging this.

I notice the image of Taylor Swift firstly as it has been made a lot more prominent by it in the foreground against the masthead which is in the foreground. I have noticed through my research that the Rollingstone masthead changes colour for every cover depending on the colours the model is wearing so that it always fits with the house style.

C:\Users\Lauren\Documents\A-level\Taylor-Swift-Rolling-Stone-Cover (3).jpgThere are 4 cover lines on this all in black to keep to the house style and in the font of serif.

C:\Users\Lauren\Documents\A-level\Taylor-Swift-Rolling-Stone-Cover.jpgThis contrasts with the 5th and final cover line which is the main cover story as it includes Taylor Swift and therefore to allow it to stand out the magazine creators have chosen to put in white.

C:\Users\Lauren\Documents\A-level\Taylor-Swift-Rolling-Stone-Cover (2).jpgThis is a PUG including an incentive for the reader to pick up the magazine as they have become interested as to what is inside.
