Seakeeping analyses are performed in five headings with a 59 m Pentamaran Ferry designed by Nigel Gee and Associates Ltd. The calculations have been performed by means of MARINTEK’s computer program VERES where the computational model was tuned against the model test results reported in MARINTEK Report 601900.01. (Hull model Version M-2346C). The objective of the tests was to assess comfort and safety performance of the craft according to specified criteria as in the IMO HSC Code classification of limitations for operation in “normal” and “worst intended” conditions. The report presents:
RAOs in regular waves for 6 degrees of freedom for 4 speed and 5 headings for one loading conditions.
Operability limiting boundaries for a set of operability criteria. Comparison of predictions and model test results.

1. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS Seakeeping performance of the NGA design 70 knots Pentamaran Ferry is assessed by means of MARINTEK’s computer program VERES. The operational limits are calculated for alternative operational conditions (criteria), speeds and sea conditions. The limiting sea condition and critical ship motion, in general represented by the vertical acceleration in centre of gravity, are summarised in table below for alternative ship speeds.
Limiting Factors Type of Criteria Sea State Speed Heading Limiting parameter Hs=2.1 m 35 kn 0 deg Vertical acceleration (cog) Hs=2.1 m 40 kn 0 deg Vertical acceleration (cog) Hs=2.0 m 50 kn 45 deg Vertical acceleration (cog)

ISO 2631/3 Comfortable Cruise (1/2 hrs exposure)
Hs=0.9m 60 kn 45 deg Vertical acceleration (cog)
The model seakeeping tests show that operational limits are exceeded at the following operational conditions (MARINTEK Report No. 601900.01):
Limiting Factors Type of Criteria Sea State Speed Heading Limiting parameter
HSC Code Worst Intended Condition / Passenger Safety
Up to Hs=1.9m
Up to 70kn
All No limits / no criteria exceeded
135 deg Longitudinal acc. Hs=0.9m 65 kn 45 deg Vertical acc. (cog)
50 kn 180 deg Longitudinal acc.
HSC Code Normal Operation / Passenger Health
Hs=1.9m 45 kn 0-45 deg Vertical acc. (cog)
Hs=0.9m 50 kn 45 deg Vertical acc. (cog) ISO 2631/3 Comfortable Cruise (1/2 hrs exposure) Hs=1.9m 30 kn 0-45 deg Vertical acc. (cog)
The predicted operability figures and the excess of limiting criteria as experienced by model tests are consistent concerning limiting criterion and limiting heading, in good agreement concerning limiting wave height at speeds up to 50 knots.

2. INTRODUCTION
2.1 Purpose
Nigel Gee & Associates has commissioned MARINTEK to evaluate the seakeeping abilities of a pentamaran ferry. The commission includes model tests, covered in MARINTEK Report No. 601900.01 “Seakeeping and Manoeuvring Tests Pentamaran Ferry “, as well as numerical analyses of the vessel’s seakeeping ability. This report covers seakeeping analyses carried out by means of MARINTEK’s computer program VERES (see Enclosures 10-11). The objective was to assess comfort and safety performance of the craft according to specified criteria as in the IMO HSC Code classification of limitations for operation in “normal” and “worst intended” conditions. The computational model should be tuned against the model tests reported in MARINTEK Report 601900.01 in order to increase the validity of the results. The VERES program is capable of calculating ship motions for displacement vessels at low/moderate speeds, as well as high speeds. It does not, however, cover planing vessel effects. For this reason, the main purpose of this numerical study has been to complement the model tests at the lower speeds (35-50 knots), tuning the roll damping against the model tests to obtain more accurate results. However, calculations up to 60 knots are performed and compared to the model test results to evaluate the validity of the results. The accuracy is expected to decrease for the higher speeds, since the vessel will be planing in these conditions.
2.2 Extent of work
The seakeeping analysis reported here includes: 1. Calculation of RAOs (motion transfer function in regular waves) in 6 DoF (Degrees of
Freedom, i.e. surge, sway, heave, roll, pitch and yaw) for:
1 loading condition. 5 headings: 0, 45, 90, 135 and 180 degrees. 40 wave periods between 3 and 30 seconds. 4 forward speeds: 35, 40, 50 and 60 knots.
The roll damping and stiffness are adjusted so that the calculated results correspond to the model test results.
5
The RAOs for CoG is presented in Appendix A, for sway, heave, roll, pitch and yaw. The surge motions are not be presented, as the numerical model does not handle this degree of freedom with sufficient accuracy at high speeds.
2. Operation limits for selected positions and selected criteria according to Table 1 are presented
in Appendix B.
3. Comparison of calculated results and model tests results are presented in Appendix C.

3. VESSEL DATA
3.1 Principal dimensions
The principal dimensions of the Nigel Gee & Associates 74m pentamaran are presented below together with the loading condition data:
Main Parameters Calculations Values Length between perpendiculars, LPP 59.30 [m]
Beam, B 14.00 [m]
Draught at amidships, T 1.245 [m]
Running sinkage -0.30 [m]
Trim Aft, t (initial + dynamic) 1.90 [deg]
Displacement 300.00 [tonnes]
LCG aft of LPP/2 7.016 [m] VCG above BL 2.600 [m]
GMT 3.1 [m]
The sinkage and trim are selected from model tests results as representative mean values at speeds above 40 knots. The transverse metacentric height GMT was measured to be 3.18 m from the model tests. However, to match the measured roll motions, a value of 3.1 m was found to be suitable for the calculations. This will partly account for the non-linear roll stiffness due to the side hulls going in and out of water. In addition, the roll damping level was adjusted to match the model test results. The body plan is given in Enclosure 1. Hydrostatic data from the VERES data check are given in Enclosure 2-3. Radii of gyration used in the calculations in roll, pitch and yaw are:
Roll radius of gyration: r44 = 2.40 [m] (0.30⋅B)
Pitch radius of gyration: r55 = 14.2 [m] (0.24⋅LPP)
Yaw radius of gyration: r66 = 14.2 [m] (0.24⋅LPP)
Radii of gyration in pitch and yaw represent values as used during the model tests. The roll radius of gyration was chosen after comparisons with the model test results.
7
3.2 Performance criteria
According to the 1994 HSC Code cruise performance of a HSC shall be documented concerning limits for normal operational conditions and for worst intended conditions. In particular model tests are accepted for assessment of worst intended condition. Normal operational conditions are those in which safe operation of the craft at any heading to the waves will be obtained at maximum operational speed. Worst intended condition are those in which it should be possible to maintain safe cruise at any heading to the waves, however with reduced speed as necessary. The Code does not consider limits for passenger comfort. The criteria applied in the analyses are given in Table 1 below and in Enclosure 5 - 7. Point coordinates for response calculation are given in Enclosure 4.

4. RESULTS
4.1 Motions in regular waves
Wave induced vessel motions are calculated for the load conditions given in Enclosures 2 - 3, forward speeds 35, 40, 50 and 60 knots and 5 headings. VERES computer plots with the RAOs are presented in Appendix A.
Motion along y-axis is sway. Motion along z-axis is heave. Rotation about x-axis is roll. Rotation about y-axis is pitch. Rotation about z-axis is yaw.
RAOs give the vessel response (single amplitude) per meter wave amplitude for regular sinusoidal waves as a function of wave period. RAOs are useful for checking for which wave periods the vessel motions are large. If for instance one wishes to find the heave motion for a wave with amplitude 2m (wave height is 4m), one simply takes the heave RAO for the actual period and multiplies it by two.
4.2 Operability limiting boundaries
The vessel motions in irregular waves and criteria for acceptable response give operation limits. The criteria are safety and comfort requirements for passengers and crew and are listed in Table 1. Operation limits given as limiting wave height HS as function of the spectral peak period TP are given in Appendix B. The thick solid line in the plots gives the theoretical limit for braking waves. Combinations of HS and TP above this line represent waves that are too steep to be stable, so that the waves will brake before reaching this height. Hence, such waves do not occur at sea. For sea states representing the operation levels of IMO Works Intended Condition and Normal Operational Condition the calculations for speeds up to app. 50 knots shows:
excellent agreement with model test results for in head and bow seas for the limiting cog vertical acceleration, excellent agreement in beam seas for roll motions and excellent/good agreement in stern/following seas for the limiting pitch motion.
For sea states representing ISO comfortable cruise (1/2 hrs exposure) the calculations for speeds up to 50 knots shows:
9
excellent agreement in head and bow seas for the limiting cog vertical accelerations, good
agreement in beam seas for roll motions and good agreement in stern and following seas for the limiting pitch motion.
4.3 Comparison with model tests
The calculated vessel motions have been calibrated against the model tests to obtain reasonable results for the roll motions. The roll damping levels, as well as the roll radius of gyration and GMT have been adjusted during this calibration. When calculating vessel short-term statistics in irregular waves, the RAOs are combined with the actual wave spectrum. The wave spectrum gives the wave energy distribution as a function of wave period. The energy in the spectrum depends on the significant wave height, HS, while the spectrum peak period, TP, decides where the density of energy is concentrated. There exist a
number of sea spectra. In this case a Jonswap spectrum with peak parameter γ=3.3 are applied. The vessel motions and accelerations are calculated for HS = 0.9 and 1.9 m as tested with the model. Short term statistics at centre of gravity, CoG, and at the specified locations are presented as RMS values and compared to model test results in Appendix C. Headings during model tests are diverging up to 5 degrees from predicted values. The nominal speed values for the model test results represent the still water speed. The actual speed that is achieved in the test is given in brackets []. Comparison of VERES predictions with comprehensive model tests shows in general that at speeds up to 50 knots excellent (difference <10%) or good (difference <20%) agreement is obtained for the main limiting operational parameters. However, poor agreement and wrong speed dependent trends are also observed at speeds above 55 knots for vertical accelerations in head and bow seas. This is assumed to be caused by fully planing performance of the vessel at higher speeds and the strip theory not taking properly account for the effects of planing.

A few comments to some of the most typical quantities with regard to their physical representation are given below: The standard deviation or root mean square amplitude represents the response amplitudes with the highest probability of occurrence. The significant value of the response represents the mean of the 1/3 largest single response amplitudes. The significant response can be interpreted physically as the response one most frequently will feel on board the vessel.
The largest response during N encountered response amplitudes in a single seastate is equal to Nln2σ . As a rule of thumb, the largest
response is equal to four times the standard deviation (N=3000).
1 The average of the highest 1/3 amplitudes is often referred to as the significant value.

Vessel Response program
The VERES (Vessel RESponse) program offers the ability to calculate ship motions and loads, including
the calculation of short term statistics, long term statistics and operability
General The study of wave induced vessel responses is essential in the design of new ships. To optimise the operability of the vessel in a seaway, it is important to minimize the motions of the ship. If the loads are decreased, the steel weight can be reduced. Further, hydrodynamic loads and motions are important from the standpoint of safety of the ship and its crew. VERES [1,2] is a tool which can be used in early design, in defining and evaluating model tests and in obtaining supplementary results. The program calculates: • Motion transfer functions in six degrees of freedom • Relative motion transfer functions • Motion transfer functions at specified points • Unsteady global loads • Short term statistics of the above mentioned • Long term statistics of the above mentioned • Operability limiting boundaries • Percentage operability
In this context, motions include displacements, velocities and accelerations. Calculations can be performed for monohulls and multi-hulls at low as well as high speed. At low and moderate speeds, the traditional strip theory, developed by Salvesen, Tuck & Faltinsen [3] is applied. At higher speeds, the high-speed formulation developed by Faltinsen & Zhao [4] is applied.
Roll damping The program can include viscous roll damping from hull friction and bilge keels [5,6], as well as the effects of roll stabilizing tanks and active stabilizing fins.
Motion control The program can include the effects form active and passive roll stabilizing tanks, rudder control and other active and passive control surfaces (such as roll stabilizing fins or T-foils) [2,7,8].
Short term statistics Short term statistics of the data from the calculations includes
• Standard deviations
• Significant values
• Expected maximum in a seastate of a given duration (e.g. 3 hours)
• Average of the 1/nth largest values
• Response zero-upcrossing period
Long term statistics Long term statistics of the data from the calculations can be calculated based on a specified scatter diagram [9]. The long term statistics can be calculated for one wave heading, or for all wave headings where each wave heading have equal probability of occurrence.
Operability The calculation of operability is available in two modes: 1. Operability limiting boundaries presented as limiting
significant wave heights as a function of the wave period
2. Percentage time operable (PTO) The operability can be calculated based on the following criteria:
• Motions in six degrees of freedom at any location on the vessel (this also includes velocities and accelerations)
• Relative vertical motions
• Probability of slamming
• Probability of green water on deck
• Probability of air exposure
• Vertical accelerations according to ISO 2631 (motion sickness)
• Motion-Induced Interruptions (MIIs)
• Motion Sickness Incidence (MSI)

Definition of co-ordinate system
• The origin for the input co-ordinate system is,
intersection of baseline, centreline Lpp/2. • The x-axis is positive aft of Lpp/2, the y-axis is
positive to starboard and the z-axis is positive upwards.
• The motion co-ordinate system is similar to the input co-ordinate system except for the origin, which is in the centre of gravity.
• The wave heading angle β is defined as the angle between the positive x-axis and the wave propagation direction. Hence, a wave heading angle of 0º corresponds to head seas, 90º beam seas (from port), and 180º following seas.
