An Analysis of My Survey

Question 1- How often do you read music magazines? (Pick one)

As can be seen, the majority of people picked never- 37.50%. Due to my own experiences, I believe this is due to the lack of the genre I like in music magazines or because everything is found online as these are what put me off buying music magazines

Question 2- Why do you think this is? (In regards to Q1)This question got a variety of answers with no one answer standing out among the rest- the majority of the replies were from people who had checked the never box in question one. Some of the answers I got were:• I prefer to listen to music rather than read about it• I like the music I listen to (this person clicked never above so I assume they didn’t want to discover

new music)• They don’t contain much about my favourite artists• Magazines tend to pitch towards one audience/ genre• I like reading about new bands, albums, reviews etc.• I read the articles via social media• Because I like to learn more about the artists and the type of shows they put on• I’m really interested in music• The internet fulfills my needs• They aren’t representative of the music world• Most of the bands I like are dead• I don’t have the timeThis question helped me a lot because it gave me lots of things that I could include in my own magazine to make it more interesting to others. For example, I shouldn’t put all the articles online and I should be reporting on a variety of artists from all time periods. As people seem to like hearing more about the artists, interviews are definitely something that need to the most prominent thing in the magazine.

Question 3- How often are you likely to buy a music magazine? (Pick one)

As can be seen, the majority of people picked never- 45.83%. However, more people picked occasionally than I expected, with 34.72% buying them occasionally. However, out of 73 people only 2 people bought a magazine every time it came out.

Question 4- Why do you think this is? (In regards to Q3)This question got a variety of answers; however the main things that came across were to do with money, or only buying things for travel- the majority of the replies were from people who had checked the never or occasionally box in question one. Some of the answers I got were:• They cost too much• I prefer to read them on the iPad• I prefer to read them online• The subscriptions cost too much• I can usually find a free one that has enough content in it to keep me interested• I only read them when I travelThis question helped me a lot because it gave me lots of things that I could include in my own magazine to make it more interesting to others. The biggest thing that came across was the cost of them in general or the subscription cost. This demonstrates that the magazines need to be cheaper than they are currently. The magazines also need to be interesting to people all year round, rather than just when they travel.

Question 5- What attracts you to a magazine’s front cover? (You can pick more than one)

As can be seen, the majority of people picked the image. This highlights that the thing I need to focus on most is the picture that I use on my front cover. A close second is the articles I advertise. This highlights that I should spend a good amount of time focusing on the articles I put on the front as well. The majority of the “Other” responses were people saying the bands that were included, as well as the genre of the magazine and whether it has any freebies. This demonstrates that if I do decide on a gift, I should put it on the front page.

Question 6- What kind of types of content would you like to see in the magazine? (You can pick more than one)

As can be seen, the majority of people picked new artists was the thing they most wanted to see in the magazine. This demonstrates I should have a good focus on new artists, along with new things from established artists, which was a close second. One of the main responses on the “Other” selection was just reporting on the Top 50. However, although there should be an article about the Top 50 or at least a segment, I dislike the idea of just doing a magazine on the Top 50 songs of the time.

Question 7- What features would you like to see? (You can pick more than one)

As can be seen, the majority of people picked reviews as the main things they would like to see, as well as quick-fire interviews. I would like to put a lot of time into doing these two things as well as everything else. Something that wasn’t very popular was letters- I would probably just publish “star letter” of the week on my contents page or a small Twitter section where we would put our favourite tweets of the week.

Question 8- What would you like if you subscribed?

Having special access to unseen material was the most popular thing that subscribers would want. However, a close second was all of the things I had mentioned. I think as a magazine it would be too expensive to put all of these things as a subscriber benefit. However, the “Other” response suggested a mixture of these things, which I think is the best idea.

Page 10: Analysis of My Survey

As can be seen here, the majority of people who took my survey didn’t use Instagram, Tumblr, LinkedIn or Snapchat at all, as they had the highest numbers in the N/A section. However, although people used Facebook and Twitter more than any of the other things, if they used anything else they would use it before Twitter or Facebook. The most important platform to have a presence on would be YouTube as that had the highest number at a 6 rating. However, for my music magazine to be successful, I think I need to have a presence on all of these social media sites except LinkedIn as that had the highest rate of being N/A to anyone.

Question 9- What social media's do you use the most? (7 is the one you use most, 1 is the one you use least)

Page 11: Analysis of My Survey

Question 10- What kind of giveaways would you like to see? (Pick one)

As can be seen, the majority of people picked that they would like to see all of these things in a giveaway. However, if it was too expensive to give away all these items, the next most popular thing to giveaway would be tickets to concerts.
