ANALYSIS OF KERRANG! MAGAZINE

Page 2: Analysis of kerrang! magazine

FRONT COVER

The masthead is bold and large. It sports arugged texture which looks like it targets amale audience, and those who listen toheavy metal music. Black connotes authorityand power and by putting it on white, itmakes it stand out even more.

The central image is intimidating and theshot looks to be a medium close up. Thecolour black again connotes power whichsupports the facial expression in the image. The red around the eyes looks like bloodwhich reinforces the heavy metal/gothicgenre.

There is a puff at the bottom which advertises free posters. The font style is capitalised to make it stand out.

The fonts vary; the masthead and mainheading both have unique fonts, whereas theheadings and subheadings seem to have thesame font style.

The colour scheme uses three maincolours, white, and black and red which isa unisex colour palette; however, thecentral image looks to be a male.

The cover lines are minimal, and the languageis simple, suggesting that the audience wouldbe aged between 18-25. The language alsouses slang, such as ‘gonna’ which implies thatit isn’t aiming towards a sophisticatedaudience. The magazine also aims towards aniche market due to a specific genre of music.

CONTENTS PAGE

The images show continuity as the majority ofthem on the contents page are all of the samesize and each have a yellow page number bythem. The images are a mix of bothgenders, suggesting that the magazine couldbe aimed at both and not just males.

The masthead on this page is different to

the front cover, which could lack

continuity. The font style is different and

it is yellow. Yellow connotes

happiness, which contrasts the overall

mood of the magazine.

The larger image has a scary, mysteriouseffect. The man dressed in white looks to bethe victim, who supports the colour he iswearing and the men in black look to be theones with power and authority.

The house style shows continuity withcolours, black, white and red. Continuity isalso shown by the layout of the headingsand subheadings. Each subheading usesthe same colour and font style and size.

The quote at the top suggests that

mature audiences wouldn’t read the

magazine due to many thinking it

would be taboo language. This

reinforces the idea that the audience

is around 18-25 year olds.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

The house style matches that of thefront cover of Kerrang magazinedue to its colour use and font styles. This double page spread has usedthree main colours: red, white andblack. The red and white are boldand stand out against the blackbackground which creates acontrast. The colours areunisex, although the black supportsthe genre of the magazine whichseems to appeal more to a maleaudience.

The images have all been editedto coincide with the colourscheme of the magazine, whichshows continuity within thehouse style and throughout themagazine.

The band is My Chemical Romance, which appeals to a maleaudience, the larger image is of the lead singer who brings across arock like effect. The clothing is informal which suggest that theworking bracket for this magazine is probably towards a C. Studentswho are also into heavy metal may also read the magazine too.

The layout has more images and notmuch text on this page, whichsuggests that its audience prefers notto read as much as moresophisticated magazines, such as Qwould.

The website is found at the top ofthis spread, where the reader cango for more information.
