Introduction:•The Indian aviation industry - witnessing a high growth.

• Allied sectors of the airline sector MRO Catering Ground handling

• Positive development in the economy has given a boost to trade and commerce - air cargo.

• Increase in the aircraft movement => increase in carbon emission.

4

Objective:

• To analyze the effect of the growth of aviation industry on environment.

Page 5: Analysis of Indian aviation industry and it’s impact

5

Environmental impact of aviation:

• Noise pollution.

• Air pollution.

• Ground level air emission.

Page 6: Analysis of Indian aviation industry and it’s impact

6

Aircraft emission:• Ozone

• Carbon dioxide

• Methane (CH4)

• Water vapour

• Contrails

• Cirrus clouds

• Sulphates

• Soot aerosols

Findings:

Amount of co2 emission is calculate for Indian subcontinent: Data used: Traffic statics : domestic passenger. Traffic statics : International passenger. Traffic statics : Aircraft movement Type of aircraft used.

Calculation of CO2 emission:Taking the example of Boeing 747-400(long haul):On an average the configuration of Boeing 747-400 is-

First class - 14 Business class - 50 Economy class - 315 Total - 379

 According to rose’ method (2006):Fuel accounted by all economy equivalent seat(x) (Assuming average fuel consumption of 14.2 liters/KM) 3(14)x + 2(50)x + 315 x = 14.2 liters.

X = .031 liters of jet fuel/KM/pax

Page 11: Analysis of Indian aviation industry and it’s impact

11

Contd…Multiplying with the specific energy content of aviation turbine (36.8) MJ/liter

 Energy = 36.8 *.031 =1.15 MJ/economy seat/KM

 Assuming load factor of 75 %:

 75*1.15/100 = .8625 MJ/economy seat/KM.

 Converting this to emission:

 Assuming efficiency factor = .0745 kg CO2e/MJRFI = 1.9 (index)

 EF = .0745 * 1.9 = .142 kg CO2e/MJ.

Page 12: Analysis of Indian aviation industry and it’s impact

12

Contd…

Emission = .8625 * .142 = .122 kg CO2 e/economy pax/KM.

Calculation of CO2 emission for domestic network:

Average domestic distance: 1000 km Type of ticket – Economy (Single trip) Type of aircraft – Airbus 320 Occupancy - 80 %

Result:   Fuel used – 54 kg CO2 emission – 169 kg Total warming effect – 508 kg CO2 equivalent Total domestic passenger – 8107456 Total CO2 emission in India = 8107456 * 169 =1,37,01,60,064 kg of CO2.

Page 14: Analysis of Indian aviation industry and it’s impact

14

Calculation of CO2 emission for international network:

Average international distance: 7000 km Type of ticket – Economy (Single trip). Type of aircraft – Boeing 747 Occupancy - 80 %

Result:   Fuel used – 257 kg CO2 emission – 799 kg Total warming effect – 2396 kg CO2 equivalent Total domestic passenger – 2583756 Total CO2 emission in India = 2583756 * 169 =2,06,44,21,044 kg of CO2.

Page 15: Analysis of Indian aviation industry and it’s impact

15

Contd…Taking only 10 % of the international routes:

Total CO2 emission =1,37,01,60,064+ 20,64,42,104 =1,78,30,44,272 kg of CO2

17

Recommendations:

More research into cleaner air transport.

Increase the capacity of airports to handle more landings and thereby reduce unnecessary fuel expenditures on the ground and in the air.

Reduce auxiliary power usage by plugging aircraft into ground-side power supplied by the airport .

Use single engine taxiing .

Page 18: Analysis of Indian aviation industry and it’s impact

18

Contd…

Select more fuel-efficient routes and speeds.

Reduce excess fuel carried by aircraft .

Increase maintenance and cleaning of engines and airframes
