The Day After Tomorrow

Analysis of Teaser Trailer

The trailer for the film ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ sets up the film from the start. The traditonal golden colours of the 20th Century Fox logo have been replaced with more blue colours. This is because the colour blue connotes coldness, which is one of the large themes in the film. It puts the viewer off guard straight away.

The trailer continues with eerie music, scratchy sounds and eventually sounds of ‘News Reports’.

The Blue of the logo continues throughout the first half of the trailer.

The trailer shows the destruction of famous and recognisable landmarks to get the viewers more interested and to set the scene.

The tag line ‘Where Will You Be’ was used in a lot of the marketing campaign for the film and meant that the viewers of the trailer could see themselves in the film and will be thinking about it and the images shown more.

The Title screen at the end of the trailer is set against the really memorable background of the New York City skyline, with advanced cgi to entice film watchers to see it for the setting and the representation of the famous places.

The only real spoken words in the trailer are from alleged news reports which make the events of the film seem a lot more serious. The last sentence in the trailer does not seem to come from a news report, but is even more ominous. The sentence was ‘Save as many as you can’, this implies that the events of the film are truly disastrous and there will be many deaths, which would raise interest in the film as people will be curious about how many can be saved. The eerie music continues throughout the trailer.

There are no obvious characters forming from the trailer, which implies the film is not entirely character based, rather it could be based on the actions and circumstances of a lot of people. The trailer focuses more on the event than the aftermath, possibly in an attempt to not reveal the secrets of the film.

I liked the ominous feel of the trailer and I think that is the tone I want for mine. I like that it is not character based as this left me more intrigued, therefore I don’t want my film trailer to be too character based, nor do I want it to give away too much information about the film, in the same way that this trailer didn’t.I feel this trailer is a perfect one to base my one on and to inspire mine too.
